No, IMO it is not worth it. I just cancelled mine after 5 yrs. I never used it once! bc it does not cover routine care... |
I am new here, so I can't offer much insight on insurance for dogs, since my first is just turning five months. However, we do have insurance for my Yorkie, Poppy....as well as insurance for our three cats. Our pets tend to be accident prone and a lot of insurance programs for pets provide great preventative care, just like humans receive from their doctors. My cat Sophie managed to break a screen and jump out a third story window two years ago and it ran us over two grand when she broke her leg. Had we had her on the insurance we have now, the entire situation would have played out differently. Two thousand dollars extra on top of all of the normal veterinary care is beyond difficult in these times. So I'd recommend it. What we've experienced with Poppy since she was 10 weeks has been wonderful. We only pay for medications and all of her vet visits and vaccinations are covered under her insurance plan. She's been sick a few times and we've been able to receive instant walk-in care without additional bills. Edited to ADD::: I just saw the post above mine, and I guess it depends on where you live and what kind of insurance you get through which provider. It's been great for us...especially having a new puppy. Plus, the insurance we use does cover routine care. Shop wisely. :) |
I have pet insurance, mine covers routine care and even covers heartworm meds, is not cheap but is peace of mind for me knowing that if an emergency occurs i don't have to think about costs.. I use VPI pet insurance. this insurance covered Prada's spaying and microchiped too..:) check it out and get a free quote. I have VPI on all 3 of mine. I am one who believes in insurance because I have the peace of mind of knowing that I can afford any illness or injuries. I pay about 66.00 a month for all 3. I have gotten my money's worth out of Cali but not the other 2. But that's what insurance is all about. Hoping you don't need it but if you do it sure helps. JMO |
I have the banfield wellness puppy plan right now. we're on that for her first year and then i plan to cancel it and look into other things. thanks to Patti and Carmen for the info on VPI, that might be something we will look into. i think it's the same as human insurance, if you had an emergency i'd rather have the bills paid for through monthly insurance payments than to pay them all at once!! |

I did alot of research on insurances and they seemed to offer the highest max coverage plus they do congenital and breed specific diseases and they cover the same illness over a long period of time. It doesnt cover routine care, but most dont that I saw and the ones that I did didnt cover breed specific illness which concerned me more. You have to choose what is right for you. With insurance I feel like its a must, for peace of mind. Its the same as human insurance, we all have it, but we dont want to ever use it! Its the same with the dogs, god forbid you should have something go wrong and use it but the day something does happen you dont want to be stuck with a bill of thousands of dollars, and yes they are expensive. My friend had a dog (not a yorkie) and got really sick so she would take him to the vet and that along was a few hundred for each time (which insurance will cover) and then found out that the dog needed surgery (which was something like $4000) and he didnt have the money to have the surgery. so sad |

I have VPI. I pay 70.00 a month for both of the girls. I personally feel it's worth it. They offer different plans and that will determine the coverage and the cost per month. I just submitted a years worth of vet visits (approx 1700.00) the plan I have DOES NOT cover spays. Both of their spays combined was 835.00. I received 611.00 back. I don't think that's bad at all! |
I'm glad i seen this on Pet insurance because i was going to get some but if its not worth it why wast the money !! :cool: |

I wished I had insurance when my Kayla fractured her front Elbow. They wouldhave covered 80%. She was only 4 months and I opted to wait until she was closer to 1 year. I have now spent over $3,500 to get surgery done. I could kick myself. I now have it and pay $36.00 monthly but her paw will not be covered what so ever. |
Sorry to hear about your babies injury but now you are protected. Even if you don't ever use it again at least you have piece of mind. I thought the same thing after Jersey's neuter and that's what made me sign up. We went to the vet today for well visit, shot and heart worm test. I am going to send my 1st claim in. I'll let you know how long and how much the reimbursement is. :animal36 |
