Sometimes mine poops after his meals but most of the time he doesn't. I guess he is an oddball puppy. |
I usually put his dinner (dry food mixed with wet) down around 5pm but he usually doesn't finish the whole thing until about 7pm. He generally will not poop until the next morning around 7am. |
Kimbo is 4 months old and has slept through the night since he was 9 weeks old. His last meal of the day is @ 5:30. He doesn't poop until the next morning when I get up for work @ 6:30am. He eats lunch @ 12 and poops again right after he eats. I think the 12:oo poop is what he had for breakfast. Then he usualy poops again right before his dinner. That must be from lunch?? Clearly Ive put way too much thought into this! If what you desire is to get your pup to poop earlier than 11, try some very brisk exercise or play after dinner. That could get a tummy moving. A carrot snack after dinner might add some bulk, thus a more timely potty time. If you're going for the ol' wait-for-morning-poop, maybe try pushing dinner to a later time. Good luck! |
Puppy poop! I sure do appreciate the responses, I'm at my wit's end trying to figure Bandit out. He gets plenty of excersise running around the backyard chasing my others & all. He seems to go against everything I've ever read about how puppies need to go RIGHT AFTER they eat. Bandit will eat last meal @ 4 pm ( I tried some of poster's suggestions) and he will not do anything until after 11 pm when we are sleeping and he is in his crate. That's a long time before he goes. He doesn't make any noise that he has to go out. I just wake up to a crate full of poop every morning @ 7 am. I have had him 2 full weeks and I can count on one hand the times he's pooped outside! When he does go outside I praise him & treat him for it. You'd think he would grasp the concept by now, wouldn't you? It also doesn't seem to matter to him if he soils his crate, or bed. Should I take his bed out, I'm having to wash it daily, just let him sleep on the puppy pad in his crate? The weird thing is the other puppy I got when I got Bandit is 3 weeks younger than him and does very well at holding both pee & poo while in his crate. Peanut is a tiny yorkie and has to eat 3 times a day. Peanut's last meal is at 9:30 pm and he will holds it until morning. I really have never had this problem with any of the others, it's driving me nuts! Keep the suggestions coming, I'm trying everything I read here. |
It sounds to me like Bandit's breeders or first family didn't keep his "den" area clean so he became accustomed to playing and sleeping in waste and never learned that potty is for outside of his "den" area. Usually pups learn this from their mothers and litter mates, but it's hard to learn this if the "den" isn't cleaned regularly. :-( Luckily, he has you for his mommy now and you care about helping learn where to do his business. :-) Hang in there-- he WILL get it eventually! |
Phoebe is 3 1/2 yrs and I free feed her also along w/ a little snacking during the day. |
Until Kimbo was completely crate trained, I didn't ever put a nice little bed in the crate with him. Not even a nice blanket. I had 4 old purple towels that were identical. I changed those towels out 4 times a day. Every single night I had to wash 3 towels while he slept on the 4th towel. Then I'd start over again in the morning. I changed them whether or not he soiled them. That way, he was on a very fresh towel at all times. I wanted him to get used to his crate being a clean place. It took about 3 weeks of washing those things every night, but eventually he got the idea. Now he enjoys his soft blankies in the crate. A luxury he had to earn! |

Only the baby (5 months) eats before bed which is between 9-10. The other three eat dinner at 6 and only sometimes get a treat before bed.:D |
Still having potty problems  It's me again.... I have tried almost everthing I can think of. Bandit is still peeing and pooing in his crate. He has only a potty pad in it, which I change out everytime he soils it in any way. I also wipe the crate down with Nature's Miracle every time I put a fresh potty pad in, which right now is about 4-5 times per day. He has a soft stuffed toy, a Kong toy w/hidden treat inside, and a bully stick in his crate to keep him busy. Here's his schedule: 5:30 - 6am he wakes up, crate full of pee & poo Outside from time he wakes up until like 8:45am. I stay outside with him having coffee/reading paper etc. I feed him outside during this time as well.He eats as soon as we go out. I did try to wait until he had done either pee or poo before I fed him, so he wasn't distracted, but he never goes. I put him back in his crate at 8:45, no he still hasn't gone.(No food or water in crate at all) I leave for work and return at 11 am. Again he has peed & pooed in the crate. We go immediately outside, he does nothing but play. I stay out with him for @ an hour & 15 minutes, I eat my lunch out there.( I make it the night before so I can grab it and him as soon as I get home) Once in a while he might pee, which I reward and praise, big time! I put him back in the crate like 12:15 go back to work, come home at 3 pm. and there it is again, sometimes it's just pee, but most of the time it's both! We go outside (his feet never touch the floor until we are outside) and he has his last meal @ 3:30, he eats outside, and we stay outside until @ 5pm, still he doesn't poop, just pee sometimes. I bring him in and either put him in the x-pen or hold him or sit on the floor and play with him. He is never more than an arm's reach away, so I can watch him. After an hour, it's back outside for 1/2 hour or so. I keep this up until @ 8pm. I put him in his crate so we can eat dinner and I can do a few other things. As soon as I take my eye off him, he pee & poos the crate. I don't see him do it, but when I go to take him out at 9pm, it's there. The crate in in the livingroom in full view. The other puppy, Peanut is 2 weeks younger than Bandit and at least has started to show some control, I hardly ever find his crate dirty. They are both on the same schedule. Peanut also eats some cottage cheese at 9:30 pm (due to his tiny size) and can still hold pee & poo until morning. They go to bed at 10:30pm after their last trip outside. When I get them up in the am, first thing out Peanut goes pee & poo, but not Bandit. I am spending most of my time outside with Bandit, and becoming frustrated to say the least. I have five yorkies and so far have never had a problem like this. Someone, anyone, tell me I am not alone, has anyone had this much trouble with yours? I am desparate for help! Today, I'm going to give Bandit only dry Kibble for his last meal, instaed of the mix of wet & dry, just to see if that helps. Oh, and they get no water after 7 pm either. |
