My dog is too skinny Any tips on how to fatten up my dog would be much appreciated. He's not sick, just very picky and will go hungry rather than eat something he doesn't want to.... He doesn't even like Nutrical........ He will like a certain dog food for a short time but grows tired of it... I was feeding him pieces of things I ate because i felt sorry for him, but have completely stopped and he will just stare at me when I eat now...... He's a very active and healthy dog. But really needs fatten up...... Please help!! Thanks:) |
I just sent ya a pm - good luck! |
Thanks Karrie! |
Try not to feed him people food, or he won't eat his kibble. Lol My Mimi girl was very finicky. She would eat the kibble only if i mixed something yummy, like plain boiled chicken, plain salmon, plain scrambled eggs, I've tried many things that's ok for her to eat, trying to entice her to eat. Then she would only pick & eat the yummy things & not touch her kibble! I've also tried numerous different premium kibble, which btw you can ask for samples. Just go to the sticky in the health & diet section, they have a list. The only kibble she likes & still likes is Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Venison. Although I still have to mix in something:D, she's still eating it. Some dogs are genetically built thin, if the vet says he's healthy, I wouldn't worry too much about his weight. What did the vet say? Good Luck & I hope you'll find the one he'll like. |
My dog used to be like that ... actually still is. BUT LOVES ACANA!!! Bigger kibble but that doesn't matter he actually will sit there and eat it. He did not and does not like any other food. |
Start giving some canned food in addition to the dry |
Try acana Quote:
My little girl was like that (she is 3 years old today). We had her spayed in January and I found that really helped. But we also switched to ACANA a few months ago and she really likes it! |

Sugar is the exact same way! If I don't mix in yogurt (homemade no less:rolleyes: ) and chicken....kibble is a no go ~ usually is still left in the bowl anyways  |
Thanks so much for alll the tips..... As far as the mixing of wet and dry go..... tied it... He doesn't even care to much for most wet foods.... I'm going to give the raw diet thing a try.. I got a recipe that i'm thinking he will like... Fingers crossed.... I'm excited to see him with some fat on his belly. He's already so cute, but his skinniness just doesn't look right... . I'm leaving in about 5 minutes to go do my regular weekly grocery shopping and will be picking everything up then and give it a try starting tonight... I hope he enjoys it enough to scarf down. hee hee. I'll keep this thread posted. Enjoy your holiday weekend this weekend all!! Be safe! :usastar::usastar::usastar::bananna: |
hello everyone!i am new here .sorry but my english isn't so good..so i read your post and i want to ask how many ibs has to be a yorkshire?????? |
Can somebody recommend a kibble that Reesie won't refuse to eat? I've tried almost everything that was posted months ago, the store was great about giving me sample packs so we could try her on different things to see what she liked. This isn't a restaurant and I'd like to not have to cook something special. She will only eat chicken flavored Caesar, but I know she needs to chomp on something crunchy to help keep her teeth clean. For anna xrisoxou, gosh, I've seen, or heard of Yorkies from 3 to 7 pounds. That's what you meant by ibs, right? |
Try the Innova Flex canned food.High in calories and mine all licked their bowls. |
thanks that's what i ment. mine is 7 1\5 pounts and she is eating a lot of home food!!!!at first she didn't ate her land food either so i now feed her only one time per day and during the day she eats a little home food as well and she finally eat's everything .you can try :):):animal36 |
Do a internet search for Satin Balls dog food recipe. Alot of people have used this to put weight on a dog. |
Here's the receipie I have for satin balls.. Satin Balls Smaller Batch, that you can flavor for variety. 1 1/2 lbs hamburger 3 hard boiled eggs, chopped 1/2 cup wheat germ 1 envelope Knox Gelatin Joint complex, (unflavored) 5 tsp molasses 5 tsp Canola vegetable oil 2 1/2 cups uncooked oatmeal I cup Total breakfast cereal To the above you may add ONE of the following to add flavor and give variety! 1/2 lb Cooked and pureed beef liver 1 small can of tomato sauce/ 1 cup of cooked rice or pasta 1/2 cup chunky peanut butter 4 oz package of cream cheese Form into balls, layer in plastic freezer bags, freeze---remove several at a time to thaw, and feed as in between meal treats. |
Thanks for the recipe.... I had him on the raw diet for a while and after I got him fattened up I started feeding him dry food, (Pinnacle--seems to be the only one he likes) and he seems to be doing fine on it... Every now and then I throw in a raw meal. But I think him being so skinny was causing him not to have an appetite, but now that he's "normal weight", the kibble isn't so much a problem. YaY!! Solutions are always a great thing!! :) |
What does your vet say about his weight? I am just curious because I actually like them to be a bit trimmer. My MIL is always telling me that my dogs are thin, but then again her dog is rather heavy and I am not a fan of that either. If he is active and healthy and your vet is not concerned, I am guessing he is ideal. |
He is still thin... when i say fattened up, I just mean he doesn't look sick.. he looks healthy.. He was just about 5 lbs now Im guessing he's approaching 6 and stays right there.. He's not overweight, just looks like he should.. Believe me he started to get really skinny becuase he would not eat. I rescued him.... When I found him he was skin and bones and had menge.. I tried to find the owners by calling flyers, posting ads on the internet and even had him skanned for a chip at the vet... No one tried to find this poor baby... So I kept him and took care of him. Now he's a happy healthy little guy. The vet said by his teeth he was approx 8 months old too! Still just a pup. And you can tell he's a pure bread... I don't know who had him before, but they obvioulsy did not care about him at all. He was so bad when I found him that the vet thought he had parvo when he first seen him because he was so skinny and lethargic for being so malnutrioned.. Before he did testing for the parvo he sent me home with some high nutrition dog food and told me to feed him that and bring him back in a week.. (unless he started vomiting and diarrhea) He could tell when i brought him back that he was already starting to get better (not so lethargic) and it wasn't parvo it was just malnutrition... But the dog food the vet gave us only pleased him for so long and he stopped eating it.. Anyways... The raw diet seemed to get him on the right track and he eats on a normal basis and stays at a healthy weight.... And I'm soooo glad we found eachother... He's so sweet. :) |
