No free feeding here... Maddie will not eat food after it has been left out. :rolleyes: Picky butt! And now with the resuce Maltese/Shih tzu mix she has serious food isues and "inhales" her food without chewing. She eats in her crate and only gets out when Maddie finishes. Otherwise she will eat two helpings! :eek: |

Free feeding and potty training Do you guys who free feed have trouble with training? I have had my babies a week and have been eating three meals a day. (they are 11 weeks) Sometimes they are interested, sometimes they chow. I thought I could control their BM's by set times but it isn't working I'm also trying to put them in the crate four hours a day,because that will be my September schedule...any advice? |
I have always freefed Ziggy kibble who is 10, except when we had a new pup in the house and then I noticed Ziggy gobbling her food so fast she would vomit sometimes and started gaining weight. I wenta back to free feeding. I also give them yogurt and cottage cheese for treats, just a teaspoon or so. I use to give them meat sticks for treats until we suffered a case of pancreatis, I will not anymore. I do now feed them the special diet food from the vet for morning and evening, along with their kibble. |
I free feed my 2 little dogs with a small helping of wet food in the evening, sometimes I add one in the morning if I noticed that they hadnt eaten enough kibble. The recommended amount of dry kibble for my size dogs ( 4 and 9 pounds) is up to one cup. They both eat about a 1/2 a cup a day. My 2 bigger dogs are fed 2 meals a day with the amount to feed them split between 2 feedings with a small amount of canned mixed in, in the evening. I was free feeding them too but my sheltie ended up with a fatty blood disorder and is on a special diet and my beagle was getting a little on the chubby side and I didnt want it to get out of hand. If I notice that my 2 little ones were gaining more than they should than I would definitly ration out thier portions but for now free feeding is working for us. :) |
thanks for the great advice Thanks so much. I did switch to free feeding because I am finding they are not eating much at their assigned times or when they do eat they gulp and my baby boy doesn't chew at all :) I am going to try this route and see what happens it is also easier if I am off schedule by an hour I won't feel so guilty. I am so experimenting with them, and like children what works for one doesn't always work for another!! Thanks again! |
We have 5 dogs and free feed. We have been free feeding for years. My dogs know the food is available and eat what they want, but don't seem to be overeating. Although, when we first got Meadow about a year ago, she would eat and eat and eat. We had to sort of watch her and shoo her away from the food from time to time. She was our son's exgirlfriend's dog but she didn't want her anymore. She was 9 years old then. She has since realized the food isn't going anywhere and has stopped pigging out so much. It works out well for us. I honestly don't think we are using the combined recommended feeding amounts, although probably fairly close. They also don't gobble their food up, they take their time. |
