| Help brushing teeth? Are there any "tricks" you all use to get the teeth brushing chore done? Curly doesn't mind a bath much and will let me pick at her or clip her nails just fine. BUT do NOT try to get her to open her mouth to brush because she will go hog wild, growl, bite, and generally act a fool. I tried putting some of the treat she likes on the brush so she'd open up but no deal. She also hates for me to try to take something out of her mouth that she found. That tiny little girl has quite a jaw grip too! Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

| What is "Cool & Clear"? The guys will let me wipe their whiskers after they eat but are not as eager to have their teeth brushed. I'll try almost anything.

| I find I have much better luck using one of the finger brushes. Either that or gauze wrapped around my finger. A regular brush, forget it. LOL |

| My little one is the same way. I ordered ProDen PlaqueOff a few days ago and just received it today so I'm very eager to start using it. It's a powder that you sprinkle over your baby's food. It helps to whiten teeth, freshen breath and control tartar. I ordered it from the Only Natural Pet Store. I got a referral from quite a few members on this site and on the Only Natural website, all the reviews on it are positive. The only downfall to this product is it says not to use it if your dog has had a history of thyroid problems so if that's the case for anyone, then don't order it. Once I've used it for awhile, I'll post and let everyone know how it's working for me. |

| Time for an update! I saw this at the boutique today and thought about purchasing it. Are you still using it? What's been your experience? Quote:

| The fact that Curly thinks you are going to take something out of her mouth is exactly why she is not opening up for the toothbrush! Here are my suggestions: First, break the habit of Curly thinking you are going to "take" her stuff out of her mouth. In dog world, if you have it in your mouth, you OWN it. So, you are trying to take away whatever she owns at that moment. Teach her to "give" by trading off with her with something better. For example, if Curly has your flip flop in her mouth and you want it back, just approach her and say "Give" and throw a delicious treat nearby. Delicious means a piece of chicken or a tiny bit of mozzarella cheese. Soon, if you are consistent, Curly will trust that giving stuff up to you means she gets something better. Yay for Curly. Once Curly trusts that mom is not taking away her resources, she will be more open to you approaching her mouth. The way I got teddy to brush his teeth was to just show him the toothbrush with the peanut butter flavor toothpaste on it. I just showed it to him every day and asked him if he wanted to do it "Teddy, would you like to brush your teeth?" and at first, he'd lick and leave or back away with great trepidation. So I pretended I was eating it...."yum yum Teddy, this is goooood" in an inviting, upbeat tone. It took around 3-4 times before he became interested, and once relaxed, became accepting of my reaching in his mouth and touching his teeth and before long he uses the toothbrush himself. His video is up on the video section of YT. Good luck!

Yup, that's what I did. don't expect them to like it on the first try. I did the same and Uni basically brushes her own teeth. Also Nancy recommended to use Petzlife, and with the use of bullystiks really helps take off tartar. She says the vet said Joey's teeth are so clean. I'm buying it next month when I have some more $$$.

YT 1000 Club Member | After reading this I can see I went about it all wrong. I feel pretty dumb, I'm the mother of 4 and you'd think I'd have all the tricks up my sleeve. Roxie took one look at that toothbrush and didn't like it before I did anything. I put a little of that flavored paste on there that dogs are supposed to like. Yeah right. She's no dummy. She was having none of it. I tried to even just set it down and leave the room to see if she'd approach it and chew on it. Nope again. I'm now going to try some of the other things suggested above!
