Puppy or Adult Food??
 
Hey everyone! Addie will be 10 months on the 13th and I was wondering when did everyone start feeding the adult food? The bag says 9-12 mths feed as adult and 1-2 years feed as adult, does that mean the adult food or the portion size?

Yes, I would love to know too...Lola is 7 months and I was wondering when would I start to switch to adult food.

She will be fine switching to adult food. Generally 10-12 months is about the time most ppl switch from puppy to adult food.
What is she eating?

Just check the biscuit isn't too big for her to eat.Sometimes it gets a lot bigger

I think 10 months to a years old is a good time to switch to adult food.

I asked my vet about this at our last visit since the boys are one next month. She told me to continue feeding puppy food until their birthday and start giving them a 1/4 of food twice daily instead of allowing them to free feed. Hope that helps.

Jemma is 8 months and I'm feeding her adult food. I give her Canidae. It's not too high in fat nor in protein. Liver shunt pups, I think, aren't suppose to have a high protein. And too much fat can contribute to pancreaitis. (sp?) So I'm playing it safe. Knock on wood Jemma hasn't been diagnosed with either. But I'm still playing it safe

ooppss forgot. She gets 1/4 cup in the AM and then 1/4 at 5 PM. She weighs 4 pounds and is too skinny IMO. She doesn't seem to have fat under her skin. I can feel her ribs and spine, yuck. But that's all she'll eat. She loves her food, is a happy healthy pup. She's pretty long so that may be another reason why she looks so skinny. But still, I wish she was a little fatter.

She is on Purina Pro Plan Small Breed. I just bought another bag so I will switch her when she's done with this one.

Addie is 4lbs too. She is long though and I don't think she is too skinny, I can feel her ribs but it's not bad and her vet hasn't told me anything about her being too skinny. Her mom was 6lbs and her dad was only 3lbs and she was the runt, I don't think she's going to get any bigger. She's been at this weight since she was about 6mths.

I'd also highly recommend you switch her to a much higher quality food than Purina, such as Orijen or Innova EVO. Purina is one of the lowest quality foods available.

I switched Jackson to an all life stages food (Before Grain) at the age of 5 months. I put him on Innova adult food at 8 mo. old. He's a bigger boy at 14lbs and pretty much has stopped growing so I figured it'd be fine. Occasionally, I will still mix in wet puppy food.

Purina is not a good dog food at all. Check the link above. However I do really caution you on the use of the above foods because of the high protein. The people at Dog Food Analysis also caution in their last paragraph that these high 6 star dog foods may not be good for pups or small dogs due to the very high protein.
But Purina,oh no, it is full of grain and even has corn gluten, YIKES!!!!

My pups start with California Natural Lamb and Rice puppy. The adults eat the California Natural Lamb and Rice low fat. The puppies sort of wean themselves from the puppy food to the adult food at about 6-8 months. The only real difference is the % of fat and protein in the foods. My vet says that with a high quality food there is no need for supplementation.
