Dry skin or mites? Bailey sometimes will scratch is hind leg area, I was combing his fur this morning looking for fleas again, and his skin and fur are full of white flaky specks when I comb him, like dandruff. Could this be mites? I've never seen them before. He doesn't continuously itch, it's just once in awhile it's like something is biting at him. |
Its dry skin. Mites you can only see under a microscope and if it were mites it would be spreading all over not just in one place |

I would like to know of something to help with dryness also.....Peb's has been itchy lately too. |
try this Bath your dog as usual. Just before you are done, pour 1/3 of a cup of apple cider vinegar diluted with 2/3 of a cup of warm water over the dogs coat. Do not rinse. Comb through. The smell will dissipate and your dog's scaly skin and itchiness should be relieved. Plus, your dog should get a boost of a shine on the coat. Be careful of the eyes - cover the eyes when pouring it near the face/head area. |

As a side thought, Vinegar works awesome as a natural conditioner for human hair (I suggest rinsing though :) ) |
I'm going to try the ACV..I also started to add a couple of drops of olive oil to Bailey's food, I read online that was suppose to help too! |
Ive heard of people putting ACV in the water as well. |

I am going to try this and the olive oil. |
Olive oil is not preferred Hi, adding some fat to your baby's food is a great idea but there are better fats that you can use. For a healthy fat that is light, try Safflower Oil. If I were you, I'd add 1/4 teaspoon of safflower oil and 1/4 teaspoon of cod liver oil to the food instead of olive oil. Your baby will be getting an excellent source of fat along with added omega three fatty acids which is excellent for their coats and skin, among other things. You can put the ACV in the water but I would not do this at this stage of the itching. |
I'm going to try the ACV at the end of the girls bath also. I hope this helps my little pebbles :) thanks for the info! |
Let me know how it turns out for Pebbles and for Bailey. Good Luck! |

also be careful of fatty acid supplements not too much as while rare it can trigger pancreatitis and the yorkie breed is prone to pancreatitis |
another good non-itch trick is to use oatmeal. All you need to do is to take some oats and pulverize them a little (in a blender, food processor, or coffee grinder). You can then add it to some water and set it sit of a few minutes to hydrate. You can add it to bath water, or make a loose paste with it. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes (or longer depending on how bath friendly your dog is.) The colloidal oatmeal should help with some of the itching. |

well ive been using the acv on and off for awhile and other than the shiny, soft coat after a bath... the rest has not worked. It hasnt help with fleas, tearing eyes or itchy skin. I raved about it to my dad and even bought some to help with his dog. When we tried it on his dog, it made his skin worse and made him itch more. Once he stopped the acv, he cleared up. go figure. I put some on Tucker because he was picking up fleas from some where.. Im assuming outside, it wasnt time for him to be treated yet so I read on here that you put it on to help repel the fleas.. well it didnt. I gave him a bath, used it straight, let it dry and after I took him outside for his last potty of the evening, when he came in he had 3 fleas! I guess it works for some better than others, but I wont be using it again.. |

I like this shampoo for dry skin: Eqyss Grooming Products - Micro-Tek Pet Shampoo #26245-Z. Since it is always cold here my puppies often have dry flaky skin but once I started using this shampoo it went away entirely. I start washing them in it at 6 weeks. It smells good too. ;) |
