Doesn't like RAW!?! Has anybody had experience with their baby NOT liking Raw? I got some NV medallions, both Venison and Lamb, but she won't eat it...either kind! :( :( I'd really like to try this diet, and honestly, I didn't think I would EVER have this problem. Any suggestions? |
I can't say I've ever had this problem. Are you giving the medallions to her whole or seperating them into small bites? Colby Tate will not eat his unless I break it into very TINY peices for him. Have you tried the parmesan cheese on top trick? Has she actually tasted it yet, or is she refusing to even try it? |

I really think she'll love it if we can just get her to try it. What has she been eating? I will admit that none of my guys are very fond of the lamb, but they will eat it. They go crazy over the venison, though. |

Do you put fresh or dried Parmesan on the top? |
Mine don't really like the lamb or the venison...they love the rabbit of course it is the most expensive. I have to take the chill out of it to get mine to eat...I spoil them. I sometimes will put them in the microwave for 7 seconds if I'm in a hurry. If not, I put them in a ziplock bag in some warm water for about 5 min. Then I mash it up into smaller sizes for Myah, Chloe' will scarf it down in one big gulp if I don't break it up. I also use the patties not the medallions. When feeding 2, it is more cost effective. |
I've just used the dried parmesan but fresh might be more attractive. Does she have a favorite treat (yorkie yummies, Zuke's, etc) that you could smear a tiny bit of the raw on and trick her into tasting it? Like Julie1760, mine all really prefer the rabbit. But, I quit feeding raw rabbit because the rabbit meat in NV's raw comes from China (for some reason the rabbit in their kibble does NOT come from China so I do still feed that). I've never warmed the raw up before feeding (never had to). But, maybe she is just put off by the coldness. If you decide to try warming, Julie gives great instructions for doing so - you don't want to heat it so much that it killls the good enzymes. |
Thank you!! :D I'll have to try warming it up (Thanks Julie for and instructions) and topping with parmesan. Evanger's chicken jerky is her favorite treat, so I might cruble a piece and stick it in there too. :p |
Good luck!! Please let us know if any of these tricks work. If not, maybe we can come up with something else. You and your baby need to try the raw experience - we love it!! :) |
Good luck and let us know what works for you. I don't feed the rabbit either as it has pork in it....Mine also love the chicken and the beef. As far as the heating of it goes...make sure if you use the microwave...just try a few seconds...depending on the power of your microwave. You don't want to cook it. Mine have eaten it cooked on the edges but now we got the timing down it doesn't happen anymore. I like the warm water the best...then I can mush it up in the bag and dump it on the plate. Myah only eats it off a plate...not a bowl, crazy little dog. |
She still refuses. I put half a medallion in a baggie and placed it in warm water for 5 min to warm it up. I put it on a plate and mashed it up, put her favorite treat mixed in, and topped it with dried parmesan cheese. I even got her 'big sis' to stand by to add a little competition. (which usually makes her eat ANYTHING) :p She still refused to touch it. :( So I put a tiny bit on my finger and stuck it in her mouth. She shook her head around and promply spit it out. Maybe I could try giving her an itty bitty amount with her cottage cheese? I'm hoping I can get her used to it and slowly increase until she's eating solely raw. :xfingers: |
Cottage cheese would be good. Do you have any chicken you could boil and chop up mixed with raw? That would be my next step after the cottage cheese. Does she like to be sneaky? With Chelsea if I pretend to leave the room and act uninterested, she'll creep up to (toy/medicine/treat/etc.) and snatch it up and run off. It's like a little game - she has to STEAL it or else she doesn't want it. |

I'll try including chicken with cottage cheese...and just a hint of raw. :xfingers: |

She still refused, even with it mixed in with cottage cheese and chx. I'll try again tomorrow AM when she'll be more hungry. |
Oh no!!!! Thats so disappointing for you, you're trying so hard! Some dogs just don't like it I guess :(. Snick's fav are chicken and lamb...he jumps for the chicken. I hope you get to experience raw as well!! |
Check and see if what she is spitting out is a bone. Bella did that for awhile because she had a hard time chewing them up. We ended up picking the larger one's out because of her teeth, she just had a hard time with it. NV also has sample packages of the Raw you can try. You may want to see if there is something she likes better. |

Does NV have free samples, or just smaller packages for a lesser cost? |

milu tolerates the organic chicken and beef. NV doesn't give out free samples. at least not for the frozen foods. hopefully the store you go to sell the sampler one. otherwise, you might want to check other brands of raw. milu is now eating primal, and she likes that better than NV for some reason. (milu is also a VERY picky eater, i put treats on top of each bite of her food for her) |

AMD--check out what the primary protein source of the kibble she enjoyed most. Try that meat/protein. Snick always liked chicken based kibbles more than anything and that's what I started with when transitioning to raw and it worked, he loved it. Good luck:) Snick & Viv |
Sissy will simply not eat (not even try a bite) any any raw, medallions, grind or canned, other than The Honest Kitchen!!!!!! |

Last night I 'burried' some raw in ground beef and she was eating it until she smelled the raw and realized I was tricking her. I gave her cottage cheese this morning with a itty witty bitty piece of raw which she ate, but I don't think she knew it. Quote:
The ingredients of EVO red meat, which she's been eating: Beef, Lamb Meal, Potatoes, Egg, Sunflower Oil, Buffalo, Lamb, Venison, Beef Cartilage, Herring Oil, Natural Flavors, Apples, Carrots, Tomatoes, Alfalfa Sprouts, Garlic, Cottage Cheese, Potassium Chloride, Vitamins/Minerals, Ascorbic Acid, Dried Chicory Root, Direct-Fed Microbials, Vitamin E Supplement, Lecithin, Rosemary Extract Thank you all so much for your help and suggestions! :D |

My boys always loved the Organic Chicken the best - it's the softest meat I've ever seen and they go crazy for it. I hope you can get her to try it! |

Just thought of another tip - you could try putting some chicken broth (low salt) on the food. :) |
I'm pretty sure The Honest Kitchen offers free samples if you e-mail them. If not, I have a couple of sample packs I'd be happy to send to you if you want (one contains chicken for the raw/protein, and the other needs to have a protein added to it). I got them from the place I buy my regular food & I keep thinking I'll try them, but I've never bothered since my guys really like what they're already eating. Just let me know! |

"Our food bridges the gap between raw, homemade and commercial, ‘kibbled’ pet foods. We start with fresh, raw ingredients and gently dehydrate them so that almost all the valuable vitamins, minerals and enzymes remain. Dehydration makes food completely safe even for pups, and senior pets with compromised immune systems. Our finished products are nutritious, delicious, and healthy – some even call them gourmet! Because dehydration takes place at moderate temperatures, the majority of our ingredients are still considered raw. The only exceptions are the meats and eggs, which are dehydrated at high enough temperatures to kill any bacteria present and are therefore essentially considered \'cooked\'. This ensures that all finished products maintain their ‘human edible’ status, which is required by our manufacturing facility. |
