Glucosomine & Weight Gain? Anyone who gives glucosomine suppliments/treats, have you noticed any weight gain on your babies? I was giving Shadow some glucosomine treats for his LP, but I noticed him putting on weight. Nothing else had changed in his life, so I figured it had to be that. For anyone with LP, I would assume that the weight gain is worse for them than going without the suppliment, so I decided to take him off the treats, and he actually lost some weight. I really wanted him to have something to help his LP though. Is there anything he can have that won't cause weight gain? Is this common? |
Never heard of that as a side effect. How many of those treats was he getting a day and how many calories each? How about Cosequin capsules? Ellie has mild LP. She is on Cosequin and it makes no difference to her weight. |

Glucosamine is a dietary supplement usually derived from shellfish families, shark or beef cartilage, and sometimes fermented grains. It has negligible kcalorie value. Its role in the body is essentially to construct cartilage. It shows no secondary side effects of initiating weight gain. What most likely is the culprit, are the snacks. If you still wish to keep up the glocosamine for his knees, there are liquids and pills that can be given to them with food. That way you can keep up the regime, but manage the kcalorie intake. Those treats are really 8 ounces? 1/2 a pound? That has got to be a ton of calories. Cosequin is a good form of glucosamine anyway and is research, so I'd go with that. |
The whole jar is 8 oz. - that's not per treat :) |

Especially the animal fat which is number 3 on the list. Not Good. The active ingredient, is labeled as Glucosamine, which essentially means that it is just one of the many ingredients. This is not just a supplement, this is snack food in disguise. Try to go for a supplement that is actually just the Glucocsamine. It comes in a liquid, that is glucosamine and chondroitin alone, without animal fat or peanuts for added kcalories. It is something that you would mix into their food at home. That would be better for your pet especially since you are watching their weight. Hope this helps. |

I have included a LINK to Doctors Foster and Smith. They carry glocsamine and chondroitin in various forms that also have other vitamins and minerals added along; such as fish oil for omega's and vitamin E. I hope this works for you. |
I give powdered supplements of the three, Glucosomine, Chondroitin and MSN and have seen no weight gain in any of the four fluffs that I give it to but I will say that I have seen a "huge" difference in their activity. Especially two that I know have LP..........they are now running and playing like never before. Actually, the one use to growl when I would bath her back legs or dry them and since she has been on the supplements, she does not even growl and after being on them she actually runs and fetches toys which she has not done since we rescued her. I really believe in this stuff that it does help.:thumbup: |
