Concerned about meds. Does anyone out there know anything about the drug Phenobarbital or does anyone have one of their furbabies on this. |
I believe it is given to control seizures. It has a lot of side effects. Did your vet put your dog on this? Did he explain what it does? |
Becca was on it for years to control her epileptic seizures. Long term use can cause liver damage. Becca never had any problems with it though. |

don't know what to do yes, I took Becka(Rebecka) to animal hospital as she has been having seizures. they did bloodwork and finally gave her these pheno. tablets to take am afraid to start her on this though. |
Lady has been on phenobarbital for seizures for almost ten years. It is very hard on the liver so you must use milk thistle to protect it. I have used milk thistle almost since day one and it has only been in the past 1.5 years that Lady's liver values have become elevated. I use Marin since milk thistle needs to be given with vitamin E. You only use 1/4 pill for a Yorkie so it is very inexpensive. Here are some links for you: Canine Epilepsy - Using Phenobarbital to control seizures in dogs Reducing the risk of liver disease MILK THISTLE Marin for Small to Medium Dogs (30 Tablets) |
Fear of Pheno I was afraid to give pheno to Daisy too. That is why I tried the diet first. Her seizures just became so intense that the fear of her having permanent damage due to the seizure overrode my fear of the medication. She takes liquid though. I give it to her with a syringe (without a needle). My kids really freak out when Daisy has a seizure. I find that going into a quiet, darkened room helps. If our other yorkie, Belle, barks it seems to upset Daisy more. Good luck! |

Here is some information on potassium bromide: Canine Epilepsy-Using Potassium Bromide to control seizures in dogs I assume a liver shunt was ruled out? |
adding a med Thanks. I will ask him about this first thing on Monday! |
I am fearful of this It started out before Christmas maybe end of Nov. she had a seizure but didn't know what it was. She has had a total of 4 so far as I know. before Christmas being the first one, Jan. 29 the next, March 18th another, andApr. 1st was her last. Took her to my vet and he did blood work her ALT was high at 284 and her pre bile was 14.8 and her post bile at 49.8 which they said was a little high. he said he was going to put her on low protein food. started her on food but she had seizure on April 1stmilder but still a seizure so I tried to get ahold of him but he was sick with kidney stones in hosp. so I took her to animal hospital in the city. she ran more bloodwork on her and she said that everything came back normal and said that she probably had epilispsy to start her on these meds. I am not sure about this and am scared that maybe her liver is bad. don,t know what to do so I haven't done nothing yet but putv her back on her old food.Sorry this is so long but wanted to explain this all I am so confused. |

Seizures When will your vet be back? I would want to know how long Becka needs to be on the low protien diet before you would see optimal results. If your vet will be in this week then you could wait. My vet said that you can stop the medication if you felt you needed to...just wean them off of it (this was per a discussion about changing meds or medical breakthroughs) I too worry that epilepsy is just the blanket diagnosis for seizures. Daisy was fine until her first heat cycle. She had her first seizure in the end of November, two in December, 1 in January (started meds January 16th), one in Febuary, one in March and two so far this month. I keep a diary of when she has a seizure. What was occurring (excitement upon returning home, etc), also what the weather is like. I keep hoping to see a pattern. So far 6 of her 8 seizures have been upon my returning home. Also, I don't know if she is seizing when I am not here. I am thinking seriously of taking her to LSU vet school for further testing. I don't want to put her through additional pain but I want to do everything I can to help her. |
Did she have a Protein C test? That will tell you if she has a shunt or not. Although usually BAT results are over 100 if there is a shunt, since she has seizures it could be small shunts. Here is information on the Protein C test: Comparative Coagulation -- NYS Animal Health Diagnostic Center I would really urge you to take her to LSU. Most vets just don't see enough cases of liver shunts in their practice to know how to diagnose them. You can waste a lot of time and money dealing with a local vet. I am very concerned about a dog with possible liver disease being on phenobarbital, too. |
Testing There was testing back in November that ruled out a shunt but that was here locally. As much as I dread going to LSU (last time I went I had to put my horse down) my gut says that is where this is headed. Daisy is such a sweetie although my husband has nicknamed her "Dizzy". She loves to kiss and cuddle but is horrible with her housebreaking and chews everything in sight. She gets by on her looks....LOL |
