Rabies shot Hi, my Bambi is a little less than 2.5lbs, 1 wk shy of 6 months old. Is it safe to have his rabies shot? My breeder told me 6 months since he's small. what do u all think? Did you babies have any reaction to the shot afterwards? |
SoCal's little Ava had a reaction. Do you HAVE to give the rabies in LA? I'm waiting until 6 months and mine isn't tiny, so I don't really know what to tell you. 2.5 lbs is very little. She may not have any reaction. That is one thing you never know until it happens. |
My little 4 lb girl had her rabies shot a 4 months without any kind of reaction. |
Gucci is 4.6 lbs and a year old. She had her rabies shot lat month and she didnt had any reaction. Good luck. |
Since I live in Canada and I got Twinkie from the US, she had to have her rabies shot before entering the country if she was over 3 months old. She was only 2.1 lbs when I got her at about 5 months old. Her shot was given to her the day before I got her and I don't believe she had a reaction to it. That's not to say that your little one won't have a reation as all dogs are different. My sisters 6 lb chihuahua CANNOT have rabies shots as her reaction is so severe. Depending on where you live you may not need to get one. One of my chihuahuas doesn't have hers as it is not necessary where I live, the other one got his just before I got him and he was just over 1 lb (he had a small lump from his). I'm sure it will be okay if you have to get it, just keep an eye on them after in case there is a reaction. Also, the vet can do precautionary things for reactions - my sisters dog got benadryl and some kind of injection before the rabies shot the second time around. Hope this helps - I wouldn't worry too much :) |
I've worked at a vet this last 2 and 1/2 years, doing both grooming and vet tech. work. I'm half way through the vet tech course to get my certificate. So I might be able to help. Rabies is required in the state of CA and is suppose to be given at 4 months, boosted in a year, then depending on the rabies shot boosted again every 2 to 3 years. But you can wait on the first shot if your dog is little. It is not uncommon for puppies, and dogs to have a reaction to any kind of shot. But usually this reaction is only a tiny beebee sized bump where the shot was given and goes away without having to do anything. Only in serve cases do they develop an abscess at the site (which I've never seen). If this happens the vet would give you some antibiotics. If your puppy has had all of her puppy shots and there was no reaction I wouldn't be to worried about the rabies shot. I personally have two girls that at 2 and 3 and are both under 3 pounds and I have never had a problem with any shot given. Hope this helped a little :) |
I am very againt vaccines after the research I have done and I strongly believe that if you can get away with not giving it you should. The government would have a hard time finding you without the rabies shot. The vets send the info in to the animal control agencies so then there is a record of the dog. If you never give them the shot and just tell your vet you had it done elsewhere there is no record. If the issue ever came up, like your dog bit someone or something, the worst that would happen is that they would quarantine the dog to your house for 10 days and require the shot at that time. That's it ! Some vets try to amke us feel guilty for "breaking the law" and they tell you lies like they can "put your dog down" if it bites someone and is unvaccinated. THIS IS NOT TRUE!!! That would be illegal! I have researched the laws and the consequences because I will not allow any of my dogs to ever be vaccinated again. The vaccines are useless in most cases and there are serious and un talked about side effects like allergies, encephalitus, epilepsy and even cancer!! There is a lot of info on the internet about this and I would even suggest you get a second opinion from a homeopathic vet. What could it hurt? |
By the way, the lump or bump which develops is a "reaction" to the shot. It is the puppie's body trying to expel the vaccine and not allow it into the body!! A puupy that cries, whines, is sleepy or quiet after a vaccine has also had a "reaction" and it should be noted in his medical history. |

YES !!!!!! los angeles doesnt play. not sure when you should get it based on size. my boy got his at 4 months but hes 7 pounds... |
Gazou and Heidi came from overseas and have had it . I'll soon show them in the U.S.A. and it is required . |
Thanks for all the replies. Really appreciated it. I will just cross my finger for this Sat's shot. I'm sure i want to get the shot for my Bambi since i do want to let him out to social with other dogs (he's already a bit wimpy haha) Thanks again!. i'll keep you all update! |
I am sure Bambi will do fine. When there is a reaction unless it is a serious one they are better by the next day usually. My Jewels had a reaction like that to the Bordatello. |
Sunshine just had her shots yesterday and I was very nervous. She is 5 months old and just 3 lbs. We are traveling by air with her next week and I needed a health certificate. Rabies runs rampant in our area and is required every year. She received the rabies vaccine, borditella, corona, dhp, and parvo vaccine. I was so worried. We prayed for her before she had her shots. Guess what? She is and was yesterday, running around cheerfully playing fetch and being my shadow, eating normally, and just being her cute self. I'm glad that it's over with. I'm not in favor of so many vaccines but I think rabies is a good idea to get vaccinated against. |
My Coco was barely 2 lbs 4 oz when she got hers and she did great! No reaction at all. Back to her chirpy self she was. I don't understand the no vaccine thing. I can understand when they have terrible reactions but I would be scared that my dog would catch parvo which can be fatal. That's just me, I'm a chicken. I like doing everything by the book. I'd rather my baby have a reaction for a day or two than get a disease that could kill her and cost me more than a $15 shot. That's just me though, I would be too scared of her getting heartworm, fleas, parvo, and all kinds of stuff that they could get just stepping out of the house. |
Thanks to everyone's reply. Bambi just got his shot an hr ago. He doesn't seem to have bad reaction to it! Thank God. I'll keep you guys updated! |
