5 Week Old Puppy Being Sent To New Home I hope this is the right place to post this...if not please let me know where I need to go! I have been informed that a puppy I placed a deposit on has to be picked up this week...She is only 5 weeks old. I know that this is too soon and am scared to death! The story goes the breeder has to leave to go out of town for a family emergency and all of the puppies have to be picked up this week. I have NutriCal, BeneBac gel, and a heating pad in preperation for her coming home @ 8 weeks...not 5 weeks. The breeder said that she is no longer nursing and that she is feeding Ceaser canned puppy food. She has been wormed once but will need to be wormed again...I will have to do this but she is giving me the wormer. She also hasn't gotten any shots because the breeders vet says that she is to small. What do I need to do? I am really scared for her right now and just want to make sure I am prepared for any emergency that may arrise. |
Hoo boy....well for starters you could ask for your deposit back. This situation is not of your making... I have gotten a yorkie puppy at 8 weeks...I really would be very hesitate to go any younger than that age. That being said...you will need to insure puppy eats very frequent meals. At this age and her likely weight...one hypoglycemic crash and she could die. I assume the heating pad you've purchased is a whelping pad? Human heating pads are too hot just in case yours is of the human variety. She will be susceptible to everything...so I would avoid lots of people handling her and definitely no visitors of the furry type. Good luck .... |
It is for humans...where do I find the right type? |
Yes, I agree, though I would bet you can't get your deposit back! Wonder if your Vet would take the puppy in during the day hours for a few weeks while it grew some? It would cost more and the staff might not be able to take care of it constantly around the clock, but they could check on it. Yes, get an animal heating pad for pups, you don't want to fry it! I once saw pics of someone's female Yorky that had been put on a heating pad and it caused her skin to slough off. She lived through it but the owner learned the hard way! That is why she put the photos of the ordeal on her website! To teach others what to avoid. If you have to absolutely pick up the puppy, do you have a friend or relative who could be responsible enough to take care of the puppy while you are at work? It will have to eat often and stay warm. It will sleep a lot until it gets older! I got my dog at 4 months and she slept a lot at first! Hope you have a carrier too? Puppy will crawl everywhere when it is awake and active. Good luck! |

Get your deposit back and run, run, run away as fast as you can. Yorkies should stay with their moms until they are 12 weeks old so you are dealing with a backyard breeder for starters. Getting her at eight weeks would have been a bad idea, five weeks should not even be considered. Not only will there be a high risk of losing her to hypoglycemia, the puppy will miss valuable lessons on socialization, bite inhibition and potty training that will affect her adult behavior for the rest of her life. FYI, it is illegal to sell a puppy before seven weeks old in Virginia so this breeder is also breaking the law. RUN!!!!!!!! |

Are you going to be home all the time with the puppy? A good breeder would never let a puppy go that soon, sounds like she just wants her money now and doesn't care about the health of the pup |

Well, the one good thing about all of this is that I am a stay at home Mom so I am able to be with her 24/7! I do have a crate for her and it is set up in my bedroom beside my bed. I also have a "puppy pal" for her...it is a small puppy shape toy that you can nook in the microwave that is soothing for a new puppy...I also took the breeder a blanket when I went to see her for the first time that she has kept in the kennel with the puppies so that she will still have their scent when she arrives and hope that would help with the stress. As for the deposit, I already ask for it back and she said no. I feel that at this point if I don't take her then not only am I out my deposit, but I worry what will happen to her! What can I expect from a 5 week old puppy? What is her Mom still doing for her at this point? |
I have met her...went to her house! Met Mom and Dad and everything! I had a strange feeling in the pit of my stomache but thought it was just me. I guess I should have listened to myself! |
FYI...She had 3 females and 1 male in her home. The cages were clean enough but the house was a little on the cluttered side...but I have been accused of being Martha Stuart so I try not to judge others on their housekeeping skills. My children were playing outside after I had given her the deposit and as we were leaving, they asked what was in the building...there were more dogs in there! Backyard breeder, I think so! I should have stopped it all then and there, but I didn't...hind sight is 20/20! ...But at this point all I care about is doing the right thing for Ellie! |
Well, I have never had such a young puppy before but I would be like you and want to make sure she was safe. You have your work cut out for you in the very near future with your new baby. You have found an excellent resource with YT so just hang on for the ride. I think I would get a sling carrier so that you can keep her close and warm. They are great because they keep your hands free and you can keep her close by and also warm. |
Thank you all for all of your advice! I will keep you all posted on her progress but in the meantime, please keep your fingers crossed and hope that everything is going to be ok! Who would I report the breeder to? |
My friend Diego just rescued a 3 weeks old puppy and let me tell you its more than peoples can ask for . If you go ahead with the pup , be prepared to everything possible . |
Who is taking care of the dogs while she is out ? If the mommy dog is feeding the puppies, who is gonna feed the mommy dog ? If she has someone to feed and care for the adult dogs while she is gone, then the puppies should be okay. This makes no sense at all! Call your vet and tell him what is going on and ask for his opinion or assistance. He might be the best one to report on this woman !! You'll probably have to talk to the person who answers the phone first, but hopefully the vet will have time to talk to you at some point. I would do that first thing in the morning! And if you have to pick up the pup, take it to the vet first thing and be prepared to listen to what he has to say. Good luck honey! |
Sounds more to me like a puppy mill. You need to report this woman if it's a law there. I'm not really sure where you would report her, but, I would definitely be doing it. You could call animal control first and tell them the story and what you expect is going on, see if they can at least point you in the right direction |

VA ST § 3.2-5900 - 6590 § 3.2-6510. Sale of unweaned or certain immature animals prohibited, vaccinations required for dogs and cats; penalty A. No person shall sell, raffle, give away, or offer for sale as pets or novelties, or offer or give as a prize, premium, or advertising device any living chicks, ducklings, or other fowl under two months old in quantities of less than six or any unweaned mammalian companion animal or any dog or cat under the age of seven weeks without its dam or queen. Dealers may offer immature fowl, unweaned mammalian companion animals, dogs or cats under the age of seven weeks for sale as pets or novelties with the requirement that prospective owners take possession of the animals only after fowl have reached two months of age, mammalian companion animals have been weaned, and dogs and cats are at least seven weeks of age. Nothing in this section shall prohibit the sale, gift, or transfer of an unweaned animal: (i) as food for other animals; (ii) with the lactating dam or queen or a lactating surrogate dam or queen that has accepted the animal; (iii) due to a concern for the health or safety of the unweaned animal; or (iv) to animal control, an animal shelter, or a veterinarian. B. Dealers shall provide all dogs and cats with current vaccinations against contagious and infectious diseases, as recommended in writing and considered appropriate for the animal's age and breed by a licensed veterinarian, or pursuant to written recommendations provided by the manufacturer of such vaccines at least five days before any new owner takes possession of the animal. For dogs, the vaccinations required by this subsection shall include at a minimum canine distemper, adenovirus type II parainfluenza, and parvovirus. For cats, the vaccinations required by this subsection shall include at a minimum rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia. Dealers shall provide the new owner with the dog's or cat's immunization history. C. A violation of this section is a Class 3 misdemeanor. If she sells this puppy to you at five weeks old, she is in violation of the law and can be found guilty of a class B misdemeanor and fined $500. If you tell her you are going to report her to animal control/police, I suspect she will give you your deposit back. If she refuses, contact your Attorney General. Please, please don't even consider getting this puppy. |
If your vet is not the one to report her to, he would know the right law folks to report her to, if indeed it is against the law there to sell a pup before it is 7 weeks old. Your vet can help you with what the pup weighs and what it should eat and how much, how often, etc Oh, and tell him what she gave you to worm the puppy, it might not be right either! |
Thank you again! She said that a neighbor was taking care of the adults but couldn't be there to feed the babies during the day. Should I get some puppy milk for her to mix with the canned puppy food? If so, what kind do you all recomend? |
Ladymom has it going on there, she has good sense! I would take her advice! I have learned something here tonight!!! I would think this puppy miller will probably sell the pup to someone else who has no idea what is going on. She won't let anything happen to it, as it means money to her! |

The puppy can eat from the mom, it should not be away from the mother. The mother has the perfect food and the perfect temperature and cleaning device for the puppy. Don't worry about that puppy, this gal is going to make money on it any which way she can! You on the other hand may lose your money and get a pup that won't last very long, no matter how good you take care of it! Then you will be out of money and a puppy. It won't be your fault, but you will blame yourself. Please take Ladymom's advice. I would! I honestly belive her advice is the best here tonight!! |
...and if she does sell her to someone else or even lies about her age? Then what? I totally agree that something should be done about the breeder, but knowing the time I am able to give her...24/7...would she not be better off with me knowing the truth? Would she not have a better chance with me than someone who has no clue what is going on with her or maybe even her real age? I live less than 2 miles from a vet if there is an emergency, and am fully prepared to take care of her around the clock knowing that is what it is going to take...I just need to know what she is going to need from me so that I can be FULLY prepared (i.e. what supplies do I need to have on hand to care for her)! I'm not going into this with blinders on and as a Mom of a once premie baby (now 11 years old), I know that this is going to be a very long, hard, and exhausting road. |

You have no idea what vet bills and heartbreak you are setting yourself up for. Please read this. Keep in mind that this puppy was two weeks older, too. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...k-he-sick.html |

You can search on line for a whelping pad or try a local pet store. You can also purchase a sling type carrier...this holds puppy up against you and they really like the security feeling it provides. A friend of mine lived in Korea when she got her first yorkie...Kimmee was 6 weeks old. It's not advisable...but it certainly happens. |
I REALLY understand that you're torn and it's evident that you have your heart set on this little one. The thought of already loving her and then possibly having something happen to her IF you don't get her and take care of her yourself is probably at the forefront of your mind, which is understandable, but others are correct...this is WRONG and something does needs to be done about this unethical breeder. I'm sure you would have legal grounds to get your deposit back. As far as little Ellie, I just pray you don't get your heart broken later when you've had more time and love invested. I know your heart already belongs to this little one but not as much as when you bring her home. I wish you and Ellie the best of luck, whatever you decide. We're all here for you! |
Velobabe...Thank you for your understanding! You hit the nail on the head! I do feel like she is mine...I am just as torn with this as I was seeing my baby boy (born @ 28 weeks) laying in NICU! At this point I just want someone to tell me that she may be ok if I bring her home! I would love to string this woman up by her toenails for what she is doing to all of these babies...NOT JUST MINE...but I also have the Mother in me kicking and screaming that she is mine and I have to take care of her! It would be great if someone could tell me what I need to do to take care of her and what to look out for rather than just saying report the breeder! Reporting the breeder will do what? It won't save the puppies and a $500 would be nothing to someone that is selling puppies @ $1500! I have every intention of reporting the breeder but I feel like I have to try to save Ellie no matter the cost ($$, mentally, physically, or emotionally) I am really not trying to make anyone angry and I do value all of your opinions, but I feel like I am gambling with Ellie's life if I don't try to take care of her! |
Thats bull---- I would never send a pup home at 5 week. get your money back and put on your no list. She can get the vet to take care of mom and pups. makes me anger |
