I really want to feed Pilot top quality grain free food, but at the same time I don't want to shorten his life by inducing kidney failure, stones, or similar. All the information out there is so contradicting. Does it not concern you guys who have been feeding this for a while  Though I also have read that small breeds require high protein diets due their metabolism being so high! |

Pilot seems to be enjoying it as well! I switched him also because he was barely touching his Natural Balance Ultra food, it could be because its new.. but he was chowing down last night. So you are not concerned about potential problems down the road? |

i worry about their well being all the time, especially when it comes to their health and nutrition. the only thing i can do is continue to do my research on the breed and educate myself. if i learn something that they could benefit from, then i'll try it out. i had to find a food that i felt comfortable giving my babies. i tried so many different food. orijen was the only one they liked an enjoyed. that to me was the most important factor. i would rather have them eat and enjoy their food rather than not eat or be forced to eat and not enjoy their food. i guess what i'm trying to say it's all just trial and error. i'm a first time dog owner so i'm still learning. |
I really liked this food but couldn't do the high protein Copper was found to be liver compromised and I obviously had to go lower protein but all the other dogs that came over really loved his food and would gobble it up if I didn't lift up the bowl. he had smaller poops on it and I did like the ingredients, But for him the high protein made him sick. |
Aww sorry :( What were some his symptoms? It would be nice to know what to look for! |
Here are some articles I've found so far regarding high protein: Watching What You Feed Your Dog - Is There A Link Between Protein & Kidney Failure In A Dog's Diet? American Chronicle | Protein and Kidney Failure from Your Dog's Diet Protein Requirements and Meat Diets for Dogs and Cats in ThePetCenter.com YorkieInfoCenter | Yorkshire Terrier Feeding Issues I don't know how reputable these sources are, but has anyone found anything stating the opposite? That dog's should not have high protein diets for any reason besides if they already have a liver/kidney problem? |

But as far as Orijen goes I really did like the food and the dogs seemed to like the taste. I gave my bag to my mom and she still feeds to her Cocker Spaniel he has tons of energy and is very healthy, has been on it for a year now:) |
I feed my pup EVO and it's protein content is the same as Orijen. I MADE SURE to monitor Snick very closely the 1st month and when I saw he was more active and happy to eat and did not have diarreah or vomiting, I knew he could handle the protein. I am so happy he can have it b/c it has SO MUCH MEAT in it and nothing suspicious to cause allergies etc!! I tried NB duck and potato and venison/spotato and Snickers barely ate it. I had to mix in all kinds of canned for him to eat it. I always wondered if it has enough meat in it also....many people on here feed it successfully. Snick also didn't like the Orijen 6 fish, I bought a sample bag and it made his breathe smell fishy...I keep it on hand for treats. He willeat anything that is "new". |

I'm watching him like a hawk also. So far his stool looks ok as its not runny, and he hasnt vomitted yet. However, his urine is a bit darker (almost neon yellow like when I take a mega multivitamin). I assume this is vitamins too and nothing to be concerned with, except I'm still working on potty training so its staining my carpet worse than before, at least its easier to see! lol :( Another article I read: The Dog Food Project - Is too much protein harmful? On a side note, Pilot is getting neutered tomorrow, and that scares me the most right now! |
Also, out of curiousity, do you add water to his kibble? |
