sammys front teeth are loose WHY? does anyone on yorkietalk have any ideas why sammys front teeth could be loose. i have brushed his teeth since i got him at 14 months every single night. i have not missed one night, he is now almost 4 yrs old, july 8th. a couple of months ago i noticed when i brushed behind his top front teeth, his gums started to bleed, so i thought i brushed too hard. now the other night i was brushing his teeth and i saw his teeth move. so i moved each one and he has 3 or 4 loose teeth, should i be concerned and take him to the vet, or will they fall out on their own? he has no tarter, no plaque and his teeth are very clean, just a couple of small stains ,but they were there since i got him. was it his diet that made them go loose? i used to feed him homemade cooked food, and now for the past few months i have been feeding raw and honest kitchen. i feel so bad that he has loose teeth at his age .what should i do? thank you |
wow- that is so unusual that you are brushign and he is loosing his teeth- i would bring him to the vet- i'm not sure much can be done if they are already starting to get loose but i'd still bring him in. |
I took very good care of Roxy and TJ's teeth too. TJ has perfect white teeth. Summer of 08 I realized that Roxy's front teeth were loose. She had stinky breath, but I assumed that was just her food that she ate. Roxy was 3.5 y/o at the time. Anyway, I had to take her to a special B.Cert Dental Vet bc she has liver issues, and I wanted the best for her. She had a professional cleaning. She had to have her top 2 front teeth removed, her bottom front 2 teeth removed and 1 side chewing tooth. They were infected and the infection was trying to take over more teeth. She still has a couple slightly loose teeth, but the Vet cleared the infection, so hopefully they will be ok for awhile. Also, her teeth are back to looking stained. The Vet said that when she was a baby pup, she may have had a fever and that effects her enamel (can't remember exactly). But my point is, YES he needs to see a Vet and have his teeth professionally cleaned. If there is an infection, he may loose some teeth too :( Genetics.... |
It could be peridontal disease and dogs can get it who eat mostly kibble. Ellie did and had to have 9 teeth pulled. Her front teeth just started falling out. She had horrible build up though. |
i looked very carefully at sammys teeth and it looks to me that he has no infection, his gums are fine too. the only reason that i noticed his teeth loose was because i was brushing them. i just cant believe this is happening to him, and why. i am worried that something might be wrong with him since this is happening. he does not have bad breath either. along his gum line he has no tarter or plaque. he never ate kibble since i have him, but his old owner gave him low end food till i got him at 14 months. |
If there is no tartar, it might be something else. Maybe something with the bone? Then again Ellie has periodontal disease and she had osteomyelitis... He does need to see the vet either way. |

Roxy has no tartar either :( and her gums were not infected. Her roots were infected. |

And some vets try to do extractions and detailed dentals without them. Ellie had bone loss (osteomyelitis) that wasn't visible to us. |
Last month, my sister's little Silky girl was at the Vet bc she had a loose tooth. The Vet and didn't see any tartar or infection, he was able to pull the 2 teeth without putting her under. Then she was on antib's as well, just in case there was an infection. |

wow, i am still in shock after the other night, i did not think his teeth would have to come out this early in his life. they might have been loose for quite awhile, but i think by us giving him the battery rat, made them looser, if that is possible. he has such rage and violence towards the rat, shakes it violently. he loves plaing withthe rat and now i cant give it to him. i am afraid i will make them come out. |

Don't be afraid of them falling out, if they have to, then there's nothing you can do.... I was fearful of Roxy loosing her fronts, but she still has her fangs and the one that is right in front of each fang. Sometimes her little tongue sticks out, but it did before too! I am much more happy that those bad teeth are out ;) |

I'd probably pull all tug and chew toys until he sees the vet. It will be okay. All of Ellie's front teeth are gone except for her fangs. Some of the ones on the sides are gone also. She does fine with it and this happened at age 5. She is now 7. |
i am taking sammy to the vet on friday morning. he has a 10:15 am appointment. i will let you guys know the outcome of this appointment. thanks for all your help and advice. |
so i took sammy to the vet this morning, she said his teeth are loose because he probably had a poor diet from the breeder when i got him at 14 months. so she said to do nothing about his loose teeth, they will fall out on there own. alot of yorkies have this problem. she said i can give him his rat to play with, it wont hurt him. she said he does not need a cleaning because i am doing a great job brushing his teeth she then asked me what i feed him and i told her i had fed him a homecooked diet , then about 3 months ago i switched to raw and the honest kitchen,. she told me he can salmonella and other horrible things if i continue to feed him raw. she also said he is not getting proper nutrition. i should be giving him a multi vitamin and cosequin. oh and he belongs eating dry hard kibble. she said he has between stage 2 and 3 kneecaps, lp. she wants me to switch to science diet, iams or euckenuba-i spelled it wrong.sorry. i am so upset about this, i think i am doing the right thing and then to be told he can get sick is very upsetting. i think i will try to post something about the raw diet in another post. |

As for the cosequin- it probably would help his LP and at least delay his need for surgery. |
i am going to stick with honest kitchen and raw, but i do need to know about feeding him a good quality hard food and a multi vitamin. the vet said to me what would happen to your teeth is all you ate all your life is soup? he needs hard kibble. |

oh i also think you aren't supposed to feed raw and kibble at the same time- can't remember why- but i do remember reading that... |
thanks so much, i feel so much better. i want to do the very best for sammy. she said his teeth did not need a cleaning, she was very very surprised because his teeth are free of plaque and tartar. i am going to ask luvmysissy, thanks so much for recommending her. |

Talk to LuvMySissy (Jodie) she will be a HUGE help and will definitely put your mind at ease. |
you know i should just try to find a vet who believes in holistic. this vet said sammy does not need vegtables or any other things like in honest kitchen. and he does not need raw because he is not a wild wolf |

When Layla was diagnoised with pancreatitis her vet wantd her on a prescription canned food (Which i call canned crap) and i told her i just couldn't do it- i HAD to give it a go with home cooking- i consulted a nutrionist and Layla's blood tests now come back PERFECT_ you have to stick to what you believe in. Her vet said it wasn't possible on a home cooked diet and voila- look who was right :p ME :D |
i am so glad layla is doing well on homecooked food. sammy was doing well but i really wasnt sure about all the supplements. thats why i switched to raw and the honest kitchen. he is so crazy for that food. this is my 3rd vet since i got him in 2006. i do not really think they care that much about your pet, they are all in it for the money. this is new york and i have been to 3 vets so far and none of them do i like, very cold people. |

If you are having a hard time- try looking for a holistic vet and ask the receptionist- does this vet use medication when it is needed or do they only subscribe to natural remedies... It is hard to find a good vet- but it is worth the search- you need to have complete confidence for simple things- like check ups- but more importantly if something serious happens- then is not the time to be looking for a great vet. |
i guess i will start my search once again. i am going to post on here in my section if anyone knows of a holistic vet or a vet who believes in raw feeding. thanks so much, you have been very very helpful |
