Well, I concur with the vet on raw (sorry :() but many people don't.
As much as I would not recommnend it with the information that I have, it is still a personal choice. I don't know a thing about the freeze drying process but doesn't it kill bacteria? There may be no risk to the Honest Kitchen at all...

If the diet says AAFCO approved, you do not need a multi vitamin.
Most dogs with LP can benefit from Cosequin.

About the teeth, whatever is fed they need to be brushed which you are already doing. The only kibbles that should clean teeth for every dog are those with the VOHC seal.

Ellie's teeth are so much better now that I take care of them and she happens to eat homecooked. When she ate kibble and I didn't do anything for them, she got periodontal disease.

Chewing is great for dogs but to say teeth are going to fall out if they aren't crunching really doesn't seem to be a scientific principle.

Ellie's vet is well aware that she eats homecooked food. She even gave me the name of a nutritionist. Her vet also happens to have a special interest in small animal dentistry and she did a great job with Elllie's oral surgery. I've been feeding this way for the most part for almost two years and she just looked at her teeth and said they look awesome. And the most Ellie chews on is raw vegetables. So unless something changes and Ellie's teeth start falling out again and the dogs of all the other homecookers and raw feeders on YT have the small problem, I'd have to say this vet may not be very educated in this area. :)

If you are going to go to kibble, it does not need to be one of those either.
There are better foods available.

Oh and dogs don't need vegetables but they are more than okay to give. Right now Ellie is getting egg and sweet potato (per nutritionist) and the diet is balanced.

I feel better after reading this thread (that I am not the only one to experience this). Bella (she will be 6 in 3 months) had a bottom front tooth fall out this morning. Last night she was licking and drooling ALL night long. I looked as I thought she might have gotten into dental floss and had it stuck in her throat. I noticed the tooth almost all the way loose. Made me feel sick. I don't know what happened. She has horrible breath, but I asked the vet about it maybe 6 months ago and her teeth looked good at the time:confused:
She goes to the vet every 3 weeks for an injection, we just see the tech., but she has an appointment coming up this next time as I am out of her medication and she will need to be seen. Is it ok to wait a few weeks? I am broke and have to come up with almost $200 for her medication alone :eek:
I just feel so bad for her.......I pray that is the only one. She has enough problems.

Don't worry much of this is out of your control. You've been amazing with the brushing wow! Our beautiful girl Francie has had all but 2 of her Insicors removed. It was shocking too as she only had one loose tooth we thought from Buzz thd Hedgehog, whom she loved and played with contantly. We went through 20 of them. She showed no tartar at all but had funky breath we thought from food, toys. She always got things stuck in the front ones. Our Vet was negligent in her diagonsis or lack of as she poo - pooed my concern over the loose tooth when I tried to show her last summer. She became urgent this winter when I showed her it had come out. We have a new Vet. I'm telling you this because likely there will be more extractions. Please don't be upset as you'll have a healthier longer living Yorkie! People who just live with the loose teeth suffer much worse consequences like organ damage and even death. Also if they do extractions, you'll limit the number of times anthestesia will be needed decreasing the risk of that procedure as it gets more risky the older or smaller the Yorkie. Hang in there, keep us posted and remember your baby will be happier and healthier!

I took her to the vet ($50 for a 5 minute visit :eek:) and she has no infection or bone issues. She does have another back tooth that's loose - he said sometimes it just happens.
He wanted to pull it, said it was loose enough, but I know Bella and she couldn't have handled the stress of it (has addisons disease). As it was, it was a fast, uneventful appointment and she came home and slept the rest of the day and seemed depressed and a bit listless.
I am going to have her and my other girl spayed next month and he can easily pull it then.
