Finnigan is chipped and my next will be also... no ill effects here...

I like knowing if Finnigan were to ever get out that he could be brought to a vet and scanned and be brought home!

Both of mine are microchipped. they were done at the spay/neuter

My previous two were never chipped. It either never existed back then or later when I had heard about it, I was not crazy about the idea of inserting a foreign object into a live creature.

One was tattooed in the ear but over the years, the numbers were no longer legible. My girl now was chipped at 4.5 months young while she was getting her second set of puppy shots. No pain during or after, and no side effects as of yet. She is only a little over a year old now. In future, I'd probably be chipping my dogs after they've reached maturity--maybe around 1-2 years old. I had thought about chipping later for my girl as I was still undecided about the pro's and cons of it. But at our first vet visit, I had decided then and there to chip her since I didn't want to have to worry all the time that we'd lose her and have no way of identifying her as her colours were changing. Yorkies, with different haircuts also end up changing a lot in looks. Also, it helps honest people who find her to return her to her family.

I had considered getting both a tattoo and a chip done for my girl, however, in the end, decided against that. I hate having chemicals/ink in my body, why would I do that to her? And I've seen how my sister's skin peeled on the tattoo site when she got hers done, and I definitely don't want that for my baby who must have even more sensitive skin.

Does anyone have their dog microchipped AND tattooed? I mean, getting your dog microchipped won't do anything if someone can't/won't call animal control or take them to the vet.

I plan on getting my dog microchipped when he gets neutered. After I breed him and he gets a playmate.:D

Microchipping didnt hurt at all....not even a small yelp, but dont know if i'd opt to do it if it wasnt a law here. I dont like the idea of having foreign object inserted into my dogs.

I wonder if they can rust or be rejected like any other foreign materials?

All my pets are microchipped but I understand concerns about them. My cats first microchip did not stay in between his shoulder blades but moved all the way under his armpit. He was remicrochipped because if he was picked up the vets or pound only scan the shoulder usually (unless their extremely meticulous) But the vet said we can remove it by finding the chip pushing it to the top of the skin the use a scapel to slice a hole and pop out the chip. I didn't want to do that to him so until it threatens his health ill leave it there.

I'm also awaiting someone who has a microchip and tattoo?? I've been debating having mine tattooed as well. Extra security..

You vet told you to take a scalpel to your cat to remove it????????? WTH?

OMG I'm sorry.. I should have been more clear. Not me do it but they would. It just sounded to painful and unecessary if it wasn't harming him. And hey twice as much chances of him being traced to me if he's lost :)

Whew, okay, that sounds better, lol. I knew I had to be reading that wrong.

My girls are both chipped - something I chose to do. Since they don't wear collar with tags because of the risk, this is the only way I have to identify them as mine (with definite proof) should they get out, lost or stolen.

I also have to trust that most people are honest and if they found an adorable, small, obviously well cared for dog, they would take it to a vet or shelter and see if there was a chip. If an honest, caring person did this, my baby would be returned to me immediately as all the necessary information is there. I have no control over wether someone else would do the right thing, but I can control if the tool is there should they decide to.

All mine are chipped including my cat.

Microchips can migrate &/or form hard tissue around that area, so it's best to have your vet scan your pet at the yearly exam to see where it is exactly. Mimi & Momo are both chipped, for my peace of mind.

Xavier & our cat, Holly are both micro chipped. Our rescue, Sasha however isn't. We've opted not to with Sasha just because she is 14 and we don't want to do anything to risk compromising her health. Xavier was chipped when he was neutered and Holly was before we even got her. I don't regret it at all! In fact, HomeAgain is wonderful! X has gotten into a few things and I've been so grateful to be able to call their 24/7 number and get advice :)

Twinkle is microchipped - she went missing when she was younger and I know I was incredibly lucky to get her back......I had her microchipped a few days later. I must admit, I've never heard of the possibilty of them causing tumours:eek: so I think maybe I'll research it a bit more before I decide whether to have Wicket microchipped or not xx
