1800petmeds Has anyone ever used 1800 pet meds to buy the heartworm medicine? I tried ordering it because it was cheaper through them than the vet. So I placed my order and they said they had to call the vet and get the prescription authorized. My vet didnt want to do it over the phone like other vets, they needed a copy that they could sign, fill out and mail back to them. So i called the vet this morning to see what was going on and they told me that if I bought the heartworm medicine through a "3rd Party" I would have to have Mandie tested for heartworms every 6 months when i needed a new refill of the medication. SO what is the since in having a convenient way to fill your pets medication if the vet is going to not authorize it and then want more money when you need a refill for a test. The only reason I did petmeds online is because I am a college student trying to save a little money here and there. Sorry im just frustrated at the vet right now!!!! |
What a rip off! I've never heard of a vet doing that! Most will write you the prescription or even match the price of an online store. The markup on product through your vet is really high. In this economy, we all have to save money wherever we can! |
Exactly!!!! So this time I'm going to suck it up and buy it from the vet but then probably look for another vet, because this isnt the first time they have irritated me over little things. And the sad thing is we have been using this vet since i was a baby with all of our pets.... |
I order my flea preventative and heartguard from aussiepets.com. Even with shipping I have yet to find a cheaper source. No prescription required and mine are tested for heartworms annually. |
I agree with Ladymom. They should be checked once a year for heartworm, if you are doing that, they should ok the medicine from 1800petmeds. The price on the internet is almost half what the vet charges, I think the vets mark up the price considerably. A vet will require that you test every 6 months (for a year) if their records show that you have not purchased the medicine from them, from another vet, or they have authorized the purchase over the internet. They need to make sure the dog has not gone unprotected. If that is not the case and this is just about them making it difficult for you to purchase elsewhere, I would seriously consider either speaking with the vet or making a change. The important thing is that the dog is getting the medicine, it should not matter if you buy from the vet or the online provider. :) |
What the vet told me was that even if I bought the year supply or 6 month supply I would have to bring her in for the test. I plan on having her tested once a year. She is only 6 mnths old right now and i have had her on it for 2 months from the vet but the vet is MORE expensive. I think its all about the vet not wanting us to buy elsewhere. In fact, I didnt even get to talk to the vet, I had to talk to the bitchy office lady (excuse my language). She makes the decisions without talking to the vet...maybe i should call back and talk to the actuall vet!! |
It's about the almighty dollar as usuall. The vet marks it up and doesn't want you to purchase it anyplace else. If they really care about your pet and not just the buck they'd match it or just allow you to purchase it else where. The bottom line should be that the pet is protected from getting sick. I'd tell this to the vet and inform them that you will find another vet whom really cares about your pet. Sometimes it's the b***** person at the desk who takes it way too far. Make sure your vet knows how you feel directly without relaying it to the person who answers the phone. |

Many vets make a profit off of the heartworm meds. I would "confront" the vet and ask him to either match the on line price or follow normal heartworm testing protocol. If they are unwilling, I would report the practice to the state/federal agencies that over-see vet practices as well as to the better business bureau. I would also look for another vet. |

I also asked about taking a prescription to a compounding pharmacy since mine don't do pills very well...it was as if I'd set out to intentionally insult the vet:( |

I'm still searching for that perfect fit:rolleyes:... one of the reasons that I did hear was"Well, you know that a lot of the meds come out of Canada and might be a knock off or out of date".... EXCUUUSE ME!?...I always ask for generics for me,why wouldn't I ask for them for my furkids if they work as well and cost less-WHY NOT!! As for being out of date...as many prescriptions as are filled by Pet-Meds, if there were any probs like this I know that the public outcry would be loud & Long! LOL, ok I'm climbing down from my soapbox now...:D:blush: |
I wouldn't be too upset with your vet office (although I would talk to the vet, not the receptionist). Too many pet medications online are counterfeit and the dog is then unprotected. A lot come from out of the country and that may be okay and it may not. So they probably just want to check and make sure there isn't a problem more often. I am not saying 1800petmeds is a problematic site but I have read at least one report about issues, so I don't think it's unreasonable of the vet to be concerned. That said, Ellie's vet never hesitates to give me prescriptions. |
i have used petmeds, but not for heartworm meds. We are a young couple with kids and my vet actually TOLD me to order off the petmeds website b/c it would be waaaay cheaper. as far as i know, its all name brand stuff. is your vet understanding if you talk to him and tell him that you just cant afford to get it from the office when its cheaper online?? i'd be so mad!! its ridiculous that the vet is basically making you buy from him and spend the extra money for no reason! |
