I am so confused over the best food to buy. My puppy has been on the Royal Canin Babydog 30. I was noticing that Innova puppy dry food was recommended. I know RC doesn't get very high ratings, but I recently switched to a higher rated food because of this, and I'm really upset I did. Two days after switching Joey got this brown gunky eye discharge. I didn't think about the food immediately, and I know lots of Yorkies have a discharge, the next day it was worse, and by the third day there was so much dried stuff on his eyes I had to soak them to remove the crud. I finally decided to stop the food; I hadn't even completely switched at that point, and wasn't really sure it was the food, but within 24 hours of stopping his brown goopy discharge stopped, but brownish tears continued for another 2 weeks. Part of me wants to try the food again; part of me was so worried I set off an allergy by switching. I think I would listen to the vet if I were you. If he isn't having any problems you probably shouldn't switch, I see no benefit in switching, there is too much to learn in the world of nutrition, it's really not as black and white as it seems when you first start researching. On the other hand, if he is experiencing some problems, then switching makes sense.

The only reason I thought I should switch is because he tends to itch a bit much and I always find his hair on his blankets and on my clothes when I wear white. I thought maybe it was the corn meal in his food?

In that case you might want to switch, some, not all dogs are allergic to the corn, and one of the symptoms is itching. I know that humans as well as yorkies, lose hair occasionally, but I don't think you should see much lying around. I haven't heard of the hair loss being related to the allergy, but many people have reported an itching problem, and that could lead to hair loss. If there is a itching and the major symptom is hair loss maybe the problem is with the thyroid, as it can cause dry skin with itching as well as hair loss. But an easy test is to see if the problem improves by switching to a food that contains no corn. Lol, you should have mentioned the itching to your vet, even the highest quality control won't help if you dog has an allergy to an ingredient used.

Thanks for the advice. I figured the new food may be a cheaper indicator than allergy test. I think I was just a little shocked that my vet didn't think much of the Innova. Everyone has their opinion on what's best and I guess I am still trying to figure that out.

If you trust your vet I say go for their reccomendation--I plan to ask my vet when we go next weekend, however being a new pet owner/new client I think Ill take his/her recommendation and the peoples here to heart and make a decision for my little man.

Eh, I don't always trust vets. My vet told me to put Jackson on Science Diet.

Go with what your Yorkie likes to eat best, and the quality of the food. I chose the Food By Nature. It has no fillers. The kibble is rated A 4, so I give Suzi the canned products by the same company. The canned is rated as a 6, and they are pricey, however, has more protein . SO I mix the kibble in her canned food and feed her that way, and also leave the kibble out for her to eat during the day. now that Suzi is a yr old, I have cut down on the canned feedings, because of the high protein content, and there has been no problems whatsoever. I am lucky she is not a picky eater, or a tiny yorkie, She is around 7 lbs or so.
the food I give her is available at Petsmart, and I feel confident that it is a great food . Especially with the canned , combined with the kibble. There is also a puppy food offered . :aimeeyork

I feed Nature's Recipe Toy Breed. It is 9.99 at PetSmart for a 5 lb. bag...very reasonable. It has no beef, no corn, and no wheat in it and more importantly, it has never been on the recall list :)

Science Diet Puppy Food good or bad?
 
When I got my puppy the owner was feeding it Science Diet so I stayed on it. I haven't had any problems with it but I here alot of negative on it. Am I feeding them good quality food or am I causing problems down the road. I have 3 yorkie puppies weight ranging from 1.2 to 2.8 pds. I was going to ask the vet but I noticed they sell it in their office so I assumed its good.
