Healthy + Affordable food? OK so is there such a thing as healthy AND affordable dog food for yorkies (small bites). Would you share what you buy and how much it is? Thanks. We have a 14 week old male who was eating Biljack at the breeders. |
yorkies each such a small amount that if you really think about it, the food doesnt cost much. they eat like 1/4 to 1/2 cup a day. a 5lb bag would last you like months. I would suggest Wellness or Natural Balance. They are not the cheapest and cost around 15-20 dollars but it last for a long time. you feel better giving them quality food and you save money with the vet bill by giving them quality care and food.:) |

We feed EVO small bites and it is 16 dollars for a 6lb bag. I would not start EVO until your baby is 6 months old (adult age for a Yorkie), we started Snickers on it when he was 7 months and we love it. It is only available at feed stores and higher end pet supply shops. If you check their website ww.evopet.com you can find a store that carries it. If you're going to get a food from Petco or Petsmart, I would highly recommend Wellness. Good luck....... |
I feed Milo Natural Balance you can get it at Petco and they do put it on sale atleast once a month also if you go to there website and sign up they send you coupons for it also. If you get a petco petperks card when you buy a certain amount of bags of food you can get one for free. |
I like Wellness and Natural Balance . Like Tumismom said It really doesn't cost alot to feed a good food because they eat a smaller amount of a premium food as opposed to a larger amount of filler foods.. I spend around $15.00 for a 4 lb. bag of Wellness kibble and then I but some canned to mix with it for morning feedings ( I buy around 6 cans of a mix of wellness and natural balance canned and it's about 2.00 a can ) and that last me all month, feeding two small dogs. |
I am rotating between Natural Balance and Wellness. I've heard nothing but great things about these brands. I also like Solid Gold as well, but that is a bit more pricey than these other two. |
I feed my puppy Blue Buffalo chicken & brown rice. We got it from Petsmart for about $15 for a 6 lb. bag. We've had her for about 2 1/2 weeks and she's barely made a dent in the bag. So when you think about the small amount they actually eat per day - going with a more expensive brand doesn't seem to hurt the wallet with this breed. I was going to feed her Wellness but they don't have it at our Petsmart here. We've been very happy with Blue Buffalo so far and she likes it very much, even the LifeSource bits. |

High price doesn't always indicate quality, while I wouldn't recommend the lowest priced foods; generally the medium priced foods give you the best value for the money. This is true in most things besides foods, by the way. If you look at Consumers Reports the most expensive products are seldom the highest rated, and in fact, are often the lowest rated. People pay for packaging and advertising, as well as store's overhead. Bigger stores are able to buy things in quantity which reduces the per piece rate, and this saves on shipping. Some products just have a higher markup, which means the store makes more from those brands, and sales people will be told to push those products. So price is just one of the factors you should look at when choosing a food. Don't forget to do a search for "coupons" for your brand, this can often save you money, and buying the larger package, is always cost efficient as long as you store the contents properly. |
hello this is my first time @yorkie talk.com i would like to say that this site is very interesting i learnd alot from all of you this is my first time having a yorkie. he's 12 weeks old and his name is shiver he loves to play all day and bite.i dont know what is the best food for him i'm feeding him natural choice that's what his vet said to give him please tell me if i'm making the right choice. |

When I mentioned this to my Vet last night he said he was not impressed with Innova and he recommends me to keep feeding the Royal Canin. Go with what your Yorkie likes to eat best, and the quality of the food. I chose the Food By Nature. It has no fillers. The kibble is rated A 4, so I give Suzi the canned products by the same company. The canned is rated as a 6, and they are pricey, however, has more protein . SO I mix the kibble in her canned food and feed her that way, and also leave the kibble out for her to eat during the day. now that Suzi is a yr old, I have cut down on the canned feedings, because of the high protein content, and there has been no problems whatsoever. I am lucky she is not a picky eater, or a tiny yorkie, She is around 7 lbs or so. the food I give her is available at Petsmart, and I feel confident that it is a great food . Especially with the canned , combined with the kibble. There is also a puppy food offered . :aimeeyork |

I feed Nature's Recipe Toy Breed. It is 9.99 at PetSmart for a 5 lb. bag...very reasonable. It has no beef, no corn, and no wheat in it and more importantly, it has never been on the recall list :) |
Science Diet Puppy Food good or bad? When I got my puppy the owner was feeding it Science Diet so I stayed on it. I haven't had any problems with it but I here alot of negative on it. Am I feeding them good quality food or am I causing problems down the road. I have 3 yorkie puppies weight ranging from 1.2 to 2.8 pds. I was going to ask the vet but I noticed they sell it in their office so I assumed its good. |
