Rescued yorkie with ringworms Hi all !! I lost my pom 2 years ago (she was 17 years old) My vet knew I was looking for a new baby so he called and said he had a yorkie if I was interested. A breeder had brought a 5 week old male into his office to have put down because he had ringworms. Vet told her he would not do that as that condition was treatable, so she told him to do whatever he wanted with him as she didn't want to be bothered with it. (nice lady, huh). I went and picked him up and he looked pitiful. Could hardly hold his head up, had lost all the hair on his face, head, chest, and 3 large patches on his body. Also had yeast in ears. Started anti-fungal shampoos twice a week, anti-fungal cream twice a day ,antibiotic ointment for his eyes and antibiotic for his ears. Took back to the vet at 8 weeks.. Still had signs of ringworm with Woods light so am continuing shampoos and cream for 3 more weeks. He is a different pup now, running and playing like crazy. Has learned to sit on command and we are working on others. Pad training going on. I am feeding him Natural Balance dry food and Natural Balance Healthy Bones for treats and training..He is getting his hair back in all his bald spots and has not lost any additional in over 2 weeks.. And yes we are sure it is ringworm as I have it also !!!:(;) Any advice or tips are appreciated as I have not had a puppy in years and am having to relearn everything all over again... |
What a sweet story and bless you for your rescue. Also, wanted to welcome you to YorkieTalk. We are glad you are here. :) As far as advice for a new puppy, hopefully others can help with this.... |
Hi, and welcome to Yorkietalk, I didn't even know it was legal to put down a dog that was not that sick, I wish your vet could turn that horrible breeder in. Makes me wonder about the other dogs she has. From what I've read ringworm is really persistent, so you just have to be more persistent. Glad your vet found you, you both sounds like great people, it sounds like you are on the right track! |
How in the world does a 5-week-old get exposed to ringworm, and so badly?? Poor baby. Bless you for rescuing him! He's a lucky little guy. Don't forget to clean his linens, vacuum often, and clean his crate and play area. The spores from ringworm can live a long time. |

Thank you for being there to take this little guy into your heart and home. |
Welcome to YT . |
Welcome to YT! I cannot imagine a young puppy having such a severe case of ringworm. That lady must have a houseful of pups with ringworm if she is a breeder. I am with the one poster who said she should be reported. Heaven only knows the conditions those poor babies live in. Has the vet suggested a lime sulphur dip? It smells awful, but does work. Here is a link that pretty much covers everything: How to Treat Ringworm on a Dog | eHow.com Good luck and post some pics when you can!! |
1 Attachment(s) Thank you all for your welcome.. Yes I have vaccumed more the last 3 weeks than I have the last 3 years !!! Fortunately, I do not work outside the home so I have devoted all my time to this little fellow in his treatment and care. He has been soooo playful this weekend and we have had a blast. When he woke this morning, his right ear had finally stood up although his left one is still down. The picture I am attaching is one made today of my little Ringo .. |
We did discuss the dips and oral meds, but vet wanted to continue what we were doing as it seems to be working and with the pup already with so many problems he didn't want to overload his system with something stronger with side effects. I agree the breeder must be some piece of work to have a pup in this shape and want to do what she did to it.. . Vet was not familiar with her so doesn't know what the situation is. |

Oh, look at all the hair he is getting now. Glad he is getting playful.:D:thumbup: |
He is ADORABLE, and bless you for saving him and treating him! :) My Marcel has ringworm right now - he caught it from his vet, who also had it. Wylie's culture came back negative. Marcel gets Fluconazole 2x day - for at least 6 weeks, and also anti-fungal baths once per week. I'm taking him in on Thurs. for his 2nd culture to see if it's still there. |
He is just adorable! What a kind soul you are, thanks for being there for him.:thumbup: Welcome to YT! |

Awe! Look at that precious little baby! I just want to scoop him up and cuddle him and kiss that little head - after he gets rid of all the ringworm. Been there done that and I sure don't envy you right now. Bless you're heart for taking that sweet baby in. What a kind and wonderful soul you are. ((((Hugs)))) |
