Flea Products on Small Yorkies? Hi Guys. My Daisy has come into contact with fleas...agggghhh! We tried a all natural flea shampoo...it killed a couple - some were still seen alive. Bathed her again in it. She's still scratching. My vet is closed until Tuesday so I headed to the pet store. The Pet Store said not to use Hartz as it has "Issues". They recommended Frontline Plus. My question is this. I have Frontline Plus here for dogs & puppies over eight weeks up to 22 lbs. Daisy weighs about 4 lbs. Wouldn't this be an awful lot to put on her considering her weight? Does anyone else use Frontline Plus - and if so, what is the weight of your yorkie and do you use the whole tube? Does anyone use another brand or product and what are your results? Thanks for the help! :animal36 |
I always use Advantage and never had problems with fleas . |
Frontline Plus was Ok'd by my vet for my 2 1/2 lb. boy . They even double checked and called Frontline for me. I was told to go ahead and use the whole tube. The worst part is the stupid film it leaves on the hair in the shoulder area. It will be yucky but wait a day or so before bathing |
Frontline plus is sometimes a problem for the small breeds and just Frontline is recommended and works fine. I divide the dosage between a few of mine/weight/size. Do not use a full dose. It is also recommended not to apply immediately after bathing and not to bathe for 3 days after application. You also want to treat any areas of your home that the pup has contacted. Fleas can remain dormant for a very long time and will reinfest upon sensing a food source. |
Really? It has known to cause problems? I did not know this. My Vet said Ok and Frontline Hotline said Ok and use the whole dose. I need to look into this :aimeeyork |
Gidget had flea from the neighbors and we finally got rid of all of them (well both her and myself havent been bit anymore ... thank goodness) I had got the Advantage for her but it didn't help after a week they just got worse so we got the Zodiac flea shampoo from Petsmart and washed her good with that (you leave it on for 5 min ... boy that was fun :P) anyhow with that and giving her a buzz cut (I couldn't get to them in the longer hair) and getting this naturals spray from petsmart too, the house and Gidget seem to be flea free in 2 days :) you can spray the stuff on pets and then on furnature floors etc. Also stuff that i was told was to powder your pup in brewers yeast (outside) and the fleas willl jump off....(the reason why the neighbors have not bites....they drink beer like water) Also fleas dont like citrus so if you bathe them in Garne Frutris shampoo they will repell (and smell nice....the flea stuff we got smells kinda industrial) Also if you put baby powder on your carpt it sufficates them I guess......I tryed that and vacumed super good and it seemed to work. Also if you get a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcahol you can spot kill them (the buggers always seemed to jump befoer I could make the kill) you just put on the cotton ball the they die right away (a few seconds) but it can be drying for the pups skin. I HATE fleas so I wanted to pass on little things that i tryed that actually worked. It is awful seeing your pup suffering :( |

Found it..The thread is titled Do not use Frontline Plus, posted 8/01. Here's the link http://www.nationalpetsupply.com/co...ea control.html |
Thanks guys for the info. Can anyone tell me what the problems are that are happening with the Frontline Plus? Thanks! |
My two are always outside & the vets are out of Frontline until this week. I bought Sergeants Flea shampoo & no more scratching. |

Frontline is all I have ever use and it has never caused any problems. Some dogs though do have allergies and will have a reaction to it. I would go ahead and try it & just keep an eye on her. More than likely she will be fine. Do you know if she has any skin allergies? Dogs are like people and can develop these at anytime. Personally I would go ahead and put in on her but like someone said to wait 3 days. Make sure you treat your house as well. |
My Xanadu has been itching like mad. She started where we really noticed when she was about 4 1/2 months old. She is now 9 months and we have been through numerous treatments with the vet. When it all began she was itching viciously, where she was tearing her skin off. At first the vet just thought that it was allergies, and told me to try childrens Benadryl and when that didn't work we took her in and they gave her some other kind of antihistamine. That also didn't work, so then they told us to try regular benadryl and again no luck. Now in between all the pill switching they were doing skin scrapings and checking for fleas and all that. Nothing ever showed up. Now we have her in an E-collar and ace bandage to protect her from herself. So finally, they put her on some thing called Atopica and that just made her sick, but had zero affect on the itching. Along with this we tried an allergie shampoo - that didn't work. Then on our 5 or 6th skin test the vet came to the conclusion that maybe it wasn't allergies, but instead Sarcoptic Mange. She said that Xanadu showed all the signs of this mange because of the areas that she was itching and the fact that it was so vicious and constant. The only problem was that we have two other dogs and neither one of them were in the least affected. So we now have all three dogs on Revolution and are using a different kind of vet perscribed shampoo. Although the itching has dramatically lessoned, she still scratches way too much, and I just want her to feel better. Any suggestions? |
My baby Prince came into contact with some fleas also and my vet recommended that I buy Revolution. It is great. I paid $60 for 6 months worth of med. and it kills adult fleas and ticks as well as their eggs, prevents heartworm disease, treats and controls ear mites and mange. You should google it. You are preventing many different diseases with just this one product and it's cheaper than buying Frontline for 6 months for about the same price but it only controls fleas. Revolution is available to any size pet (cat and dog) as long as you buy the package according to their weight. It's recommended for animals 6 weeks of age and older. Hope this helps. If you have any more questions, let me know or google it. I bought it from my vet and don't know what the price is online. |
Rosi been on Frontline Plus since she was 10 weeks old now @6 month she weighs 3.7 pounds, and never had a problem or Fleas ! |
