Interceptor Flavor Tabs So my vet gave me a pill that is apparently a heart worm preventative. Has anyone used this? I'm a bit reluctant to use this drug, since he hardly goes outside anyways. However, if it is not dangerous, I would like to continue to use it as a preventative. He is only about 4 months- and weighs 2 1/2 pounds. |
Max is 5 lbs, and we've been using Interceptor since he was brought home 4 y/a, with no problem.I'm sure some more experienced member will be able to help better than I can. |
my vet only recommends interceptor or sentinel for heartworm preventatives for my yorkies...i believe they have been documented as having the least amount of negative reactions and a low failure rate (meaning getting heartworm while being on the preventative) and i like the fact they have doses metered for 2-10 lbs (unlike other heartworm which is up to 25lbs)...i have a problem giving my kids - all who weigh less than 4lbs - the same amount of medicine that a 25lb dog would get any drug given to our babies should be well thought out...but heartworm is prevalent in many parts of the US and i personally would rather be safe than sorry...i am sure you will get more responses from more of the experts on here :) ooh and my vet wanted me to get my youngest (bree) on interceptor the minute she reached 2lbs |

Check out this website. Unbelievable picture, and info on giving heartworm meds year round, even for inside dogs. Just an FYI. |
All mine have been on Interceptor since day one. (As well as my dogs before them.) Mine stay inside for the most part, but living in Alabama, it's not uncommon for mosquitos to get in your house too, so it's well worth it. Years ago, I had a dog that had heartworms. I have walked the road of having a dog treated for and recovering from that before and I will do whatever it takes from having one of mine have to go through that again! |
Mine use the Interceptor. Hot Rod is 18 mos and Maggie 10 mos. They are both 4 lbs. |
Since mosquitos can fly into your house, your pup isn't protected without a preventative. Interceptor does have side effects but is relatively safe. |
So no one has really had problems with interceptor? I live in Wisconsin(for the moment) the doctor recommended that I use it year round. The product itself says that you don't have to use during the winter if mosquitoes are not present. Our summer is short here so do you guys think its wise to keep dosing him even during the winter? |

Side effects have been reported even on YT if I remember right. It should be just fine though. |
I will be switching to Interceptor this year. |
Nope, never had any problems and have had 6 Yorkies, 1 Bassett, 3 Pekes, 1 Mutt on it. We do it year round too. If they ever miss doses, it's recommended that they be tested before starting treatment back up again, so I just keep them on it. |
Lola is 4 lbs and 1 year old and since I got her(which was asap after her 8th week b-day. :D) she's been on interceptor. My vet(whom I trust completely) sat me down and discussed the options I had in heartworm preventitives. He even used a dry erase board to illustrate some points. lol Like several posters have said "Better safe than sorry." |
Copper has been on this no problem, and he is a very sensitive dog. However just started Maddie on it tuesday, she was so sick after I gave it to her, vommiting, bloody diarreah, it really upset her stomach. it has been 2 days and she is just now getting back to normal all the way. The vet thinks that it may have been a little much on her system coupled with shots and that she is exactly 2lbs, so she barely made the cut off. When I called he had said that he didn't normally have problems with that one, and he mainly works with small dogs. Every dog is different, I am going to keep Copper on the interceptor and try something else with Maddie. |
I agree with other posters better safe than sorry |
All three of mine are on interceptor also with no problems...Eli will go on it also this coming dose..Did not start his yet.Just got him a few days ago but trying to keep the date the same as the others...So will dose all at the same time. |
We use it as well. No problems. Pam |
Maximus is on this too. Our vet said the cost of preventive is much less than the cost of treatment. He hasn't had any problems on it. He gets it once a month on the 1st day of the month. |
Interceptor is considered by many to be the safest heartworm preventative out there. Heartguard has been linked to seizures, mostly in Collies, but why take a chance? |
All of my dogs (big and little) have been on Interceptor year round from the time I brought them home with no problems. I have witnessed first hand a dog suffering from hearworm (not mine) and there is no way I would even think of not using it. I should add that I live in PA and have cold winters and I have seen a mosquito a time or two in the winter in the house so.....it's year round for us. |
Max uses Interceptor. Been on it since his first puppy visit at 13 weeks. No problems. I give it year round. |
I have used this for all of my babies year around without any problems Betty & Micah my love:aimeeyork |
I use Interceptor and Frontline on Harley year round. I give one the 1st and one the 15th just to space them out. When I got Harley he was about 14 weeks and is now 10 months, I have used it on him the entire time. Jeri and Harley:aimeeyork |
Pepper has been on Interceptor since he was about 13 weeks old. He is now a little over a year old and we have had no problems. We also use it year round. |
Great Site I went on this website PetCareRx - Discount pet meds, pet medications and pet medicines available at our pet pharmacy and the sale ends today. You can get 20% and free shipping on Interceptor. I got a 12 month supply for 36.79. Great deal!! This is for my yorkie who is 5.5lbs!;) |

I've also used Interceptor since we got Roxy. Now 6 mo, and no problems from it. I usually make sure she has a little food in her tummy before giving just in case. I like the checklist of all the things it covers. |
Coco uses interceptor. I have to cover it in peanut butter to get her to eat it though. LOL She likes to spit it out. |
We use Interceptor as well. I like the fact that it is just the heartworm preventative and doesn't have flea/tick protection in it. It also has the lowest number of incidents reported out of all the heartworm meds. Heartworm is a very serious disease and if contracted, the treatment can kill our little ones. This is the one area where I don't hesitate to medicate. |
I give all four of my babies this. I always get nervous when giving them anything but as Jodie said above, this is one thing I won't skip on. Heartworms are too dangerous. As a few others mentioned, my vet also prefers Interceptor over any other H.W. meds. :) |
