My two are actually eating now. I've done the tough love thing and it has worked in my case. It seems as though the natural balance rolls are what they really like. I would really like to find a dry that they like and that Hot Rod isn't itching from to mix with it, but for now I am happy that they are both eating. Maggie has eaten her bowl as well as whatever Hot Rod doesn't finish in his. Have you tried the Natural Balance roll? There are 3 flavors: lamb, turkey and beef. Good luck...I totally understand your frustration. |
Oh this is so sad...I think in this case, I would consider 100% home cooking. There are some wonderful recipes on here that are balanced for dogs. I know it's difficult, but many, many people do it. Not junk food...just real food. Also, I must agree about the NutriCal...I have to give it to Winston when he has an episode of hypoglycemic seizures...he WILL NOT eat afterwards...not even treats. I think it makes him nauseous, as he often vomits as he comes out of it...all NutriCal and it's a slimy mess. Another thought, have you considered talking to a Nutritionist? I hear wonderful things about Susan Davis...maybe she'd have a solution to your problem. Best wishes...hopes and prayers!!! |
i had this problem with my girl... i decided one day she will eat when she is hungry. sure enough she started eating. i just left the food down and eventually she ate. she has now been on the same food for 7 months and she is about to be 2 next month. .... if my girl went WAY to long without eating i would give her a little nutrical... but now, she has no eating problems. |
Hi, I thought you might want to check out the recipes I found on this site. The names like they may be what your baby is looking for. http://www.yorkie.org/supplies/pet_food.htmlund |

You must be completely mentally and physically worm out worring about this little one. Since food won't make her eat how about testing her. Do you have a friend with another small dog? If so bring her over and feed them side by side using only one bowl. See if she get's jealous about the other one eating her food and starts eating it herself. I would be so curious to see if she really can't or won't eat or she' just busting your chops. Good luck, |
How is your little one doing today? There was something that I did when Hot Rod was a pup...I would sit with him in his closed pen and I held his bowl sometimes (not spoiled at all, is he? lol) while he would climb all over me and eat in the most contorted poses. When he stopped eating, I would "play" with him. That's where we played "Gotcha". I would take my finger and just touch him all over and say "gotcha". Well, for whatever reason, he stated playing back with his nose and then he would eat for a few minutes at a time too. I don't know if it stimulated his appetite or if it just distracted him from what I was wanting him to focus on. I can't tell why it worked, but it did. When we would have his food down, we noticed that he would take a piece and run clear across the room and eat it and he would keep doing this for about 5 minutes. Maybe she just wants to play for awhile or just be with mommy. |
that's funny archie... i do that too!!! i let my big dog in... and oh! there she goes... she gobbles her food right up:D |
Good afternoon! Lexi still does not eat real well, but sometimes I sit by her until she gets started eating. I think sometimes they are worried they might miss something that mom is doing! |
Ready to give up I was thinking today that my vet (wonderful) gave Jack a shot to boost his eating habit. And it worked he use to be a not eater. I don't know the name of it but you might ask. Cheryl:animal-pa |

Update... Goood newsssss!!! Guys.... I know this may be preliminary but... SHE ACTUALLY IS EATING THE HALO SAMPLES I GOT IN THE MAIL!!!! I got it yesterday at work so I gave it to her for dinner and she inhaled it!!! I was like holy crapppppppp!!!!! And on top of that I served her some of the Halo Salmon kibble and she ate that tooooooo.... So I was like well I bet this is only tonight cause she has hardly eaten in a couple of days... So this morning she literally devoured her breakfast again and I mixed kibble in her food and she ate everything!!!!! I was in complete shock !!!!! So she just had dinner and i served her a little bit for dinner and she ate it all up again..... What surprises me the most is that she actually eats the vegetables too. When I used to give her Merricks wingalings she would spit out the veggies I guess Halo it is... and BTW that food actually smells good... well the chicken anyway... it kinda smells like chicken campbells soup LOL But I have to say that the process of feeding her food has changed.... I play with her 15-20 after I come from work and then I call her to eat and she completely listens and does it. Then I pause for a bit and play some more and sometimes SHE stops playing and goes to eat by HERSELF!!!! I just gotta say you guys are the best and THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUGGESTIONS... Hopefully this is it and she will stick to this for a while... THANKS AGAIN :):):):):):p:p:p:p:thumbup: |
Oh and by the way I will be doing the meat ball mixture thingy for weight gain this weekend... I finally see light at the end of the tunnel... |
YAY!!!!! Thank goodness. I've been hoping for a breakthrough, and wow, finally she's eating. What a relief for you. Celebration time!!!! Shellie Cassie and Muffin :good job: |
Yay!! Sounds like she is settling down to a routine. We'll keep our fingers and paws crossed for you.;) |
have you tried feeding her out of your hand? :) good luck she has to eat sometime. |
Yea I'm so glad that she is eating. Like the others I have noticed that pepper will eat all her food if her brothers are in the house. I feed mine natural balance dry but for some variety I will chunk up some natural balance food rolls and mix it in. I have a terrier mix that I am trying to put some weight on. I'm so glad that you asked for the satin balls recipe, i've been looking for it. Right now I'm adding on some of the beneful prepared meals on top of the kibble and mixing it in trying to put some weight on him. One thing that the other posters didn't come up with, add some nutical to the kibble and stir it up. to get to the nutrical, they have to eat the food. works with mine. I also will feed the dogs in front of me or in the same room, Cricket will play dominate and eat wiley's food if I don't watch out. check out my avatar for pics of the dogs if you want. Wiley is the one that needs to gain weight. |
Hey Katrn: When she was a puppy I used to try to mix the nutri-cal in her food but she wasn't having it either... I have had this picky food problem for a while now... LOL I actually tried putting the nutrical in her solid gold wee bits when she wasnt eating and she still wouldnt eat it... She will only eat Nutrical on my finger LOL... Rebecca |

It's called "Doggie Psychology":p I am so happy she is eating. What a relief. Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyy That's great news. |
I hope and pray it last...keep up the good work...keep eating little girl!!! |
Had a thought about your dog at 3:50am this morning :p - does she like peanut butter??? If yes, I use this Peanut Butter "powder" for myself and I LOVE it - I mix it in vanilla yogurt and whatever. Anyways, if she is a fan of PB - you could maybe sprinkle the powder on her food....? Btw, I don't know the "hows" of it, but has her nose been thoroughly checked out by a vet bc I'm wondering if she has something wrong there... |
Hey Wylies Mom: No she does not like Peanut Butter LOL. But let me tell you that HALO is a miracle!!! YEAH I SAID IT A MIRACLE LOL She has LITERALLY left her bowl clean since I have been feeding her that. She is also eating the dry food from Halo that I leave out for her during the day... I have to refill it everyday!!!! |
Hmmmm, I wonder if I should try Halo for Thor.... what dried flavor are you using? Is Halo considered a "high quality" food? |
Dear Quicksilver: To be honest I do not know if Halo is a "high quality" dog food. But what I do know is that Abby is eating it LOL. I literally tried I think every 5 star dog food on the market and nothing worked. At this point, I just wanted her to eat something. Right now she is on the chicken and beef spots stew wet ... and the salmon spots stew kibble According to the site, it is oragnic and healthy.... Try it... the 5 oz can is $1.50 by my house... it doesnt hurt... Rebecca |
