| Help please.. I need some advice. On anal glands. I have to empty Chloe's Anal glands almost every 2 weeks. I dont think this is normal. She poops fine ,eats fine she is other wise normal Until they get full and she tucks her tail and runs away and hides. (I assume shes trying to hide from the pain) Can somebody tell me a few reasons as to WHY her anal glands fill up so fast? I have to tell you, I am paranoid about bringing her to the vet. I am scared the vet will want her PTS cause her age. People tell me they wouldnt do that, But its something that is on my mind every time she gets her yearly check up. BTW- It dont look infected or anything. And the liquid that comes out looks normal. Its starting to become a nuisence. Any help is appreciated of course.. |

| I'm sorry, I've no advice on this. knock-on-wood I've never had this issue with any of my dogs. However, I will say that any vet that pressures you to PTS a dog simply because of their age isn't a vet I would be going back to. If you don't have the option to change vets, then just know that they can only say what they (in their small infantile uninformed minds) think you should do. They can not make you do anything. Stand your ground and don't give in. You are your babies only advocate. Tell them, "Thank you for your input, I'll take it under advisement. Now can we address blah-blah-blah, which is the reason we are here today." Stay calm, focused and give them your best "aww bless your wittle ignorant heart" look, you'll be surprised at what little defense they have against that.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Joey had this problem as a puppy; the vet said that dogs normally empty the anal glands when they poop. The anal glands contain a strong smelling liquid and a few drops of this used to "mark" their poop. Some dogs have a problem with pushing hard enough to empty the glands, and the glands become too full. Years ago, this was a regular part of grooming, but vets found that if a dog doesn't need the help, it's best not to do it. You can also do it incorrectly and push the contents further up, leading to impaction and infection. Some people say that adding more fiber to the diet helps. We added a tsp. of ground flax seed, and about 5 green beans, (for other reasons) to Joey's diet, and the problem stopped, but I don't know if it was connected to that or he simply outgrew it.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | It could be an ingredient in the food you're feeding. What are you feeding?

| How old is Chloe? How long have you been doing this for? I know it is scary. Bubba had an anal gland rupture a few years ago, and it scared me forever that they would fill up again. I was vigilant about it, but so scared of doing more harm than good.

YT 3000 Club Member | Chester has problems every couple of months, they need more fiber for bigger poop to help empty the anal glands. Chester has 4% percent in his solid gold wee bits if it is any less I can have problems. Green beans are good for extra fiber, canned pumpkin with no sugar in it as well |

| could try a small teaspoon of cooked shredded cabbage or broccoli for roughage in the diet too...also a little coconut not the sugared one but shredded ...then instead of squeezing the glands to empty them use a cup of boiled water steep a half of a teaspoon of horsetail (herb)for about 10 minutes let cool till luke warm dip a washcloth in it and apply it to his anal area..these are this things we did to remedy the situation..from what i have learned to keep squeezing it on a regular basis it activates the refilling of the gland....... i have heard u could also try epsom salt same way but have not tried that one ... |
