Intestinal Biopsy
 
Anyone's doggie have this done (full thickness abdominal...not endoscopy)?
Did it go okay?

Wookie:aimeeyork had biopsies taken of his stomach and intestine when he had to have emergency exploratory surgery. They all came back fine and he had no problems at all with the surgery or the biopsies. And they found nothing in his intestines either like they thought they would!

No.
The vet wants it done before she wiil give prednisolone which may be the only thing that will work. We are trying Tylan right now.

Biopsy of the small intestine looks kind of dangerous though...1 in 12 die if I am reading things right.:confused:

Right now she has a UTI that has to clear up though. So we have an answer for the excessive thirst thankfully.

I've never heard of a UTI, causing excessive thirst. Is the vet sure of this? While frequent urination often occurs, due to bladder irritation and discomfort, the amount is often minimal, and so the thirst isn't affected. Have they ruled out diabetes, which causes both excessive thirst and urination? Also, diabetes lowers the resistance to other things, and infections are more likely to occur. Best of luck with the biopsy.

I am sorry to read about Ellie not feeling so good. I put a little cran relief in Jazzies water to keep uti's away, it is made by Naturvet. I would look into diabetes 1st, much simpler test I hope, could it be diet related? Perhaps something she has been eating for a while no longer agrees with her? I wish little Ellie the best in the search for answers. ;)

We aren't really sure that it is causing the polydipsia but it can be a symtpom: Pfizer Animal Health Dogs Health Management

I am hoping it isn't stones.
I am also wondering if the polydipsia is related to her gastrointesinal issues but they started at different times. If the antibiotics don't clear up the drinking problem, we will go farther with diagnostics (probably just blood work and if there is any question about the urine...diagnostic imaging). I had no idea Ellie was peeing more though. I am thinking she has been going on the carpet more than what I've caught and her puddles may be bigger...

For the GI issues, we are switching her diet around. Her nutritionist has reformulated her recipe. The drinking to not be diet related. It could have been the inclusion of probiotics but I'm really thinking it has to do with her infection...hopefully.

I'm not sure that she can have cranberry anything with her liver. Not sure there but her pH is 7.5.

When TJ had his issues, they suggested Biospy of the Small Intestines, BUT I said no, as I was too nervous about it.

Tylan Powder worked very well for TJ. I started to see good results within 3 to 4 months. I have tons of old posts about Tylan from 05 and 06 - I am sure you've seen them though.

Ellie is in my thoughts, and I am hoping the Tylan works. It was a miracle saver for TJ :)

Hmmm, there is no way we can wait 3-4 months for a major change. Lymphosarcoma, lymphangiectasia and PLE have to be ruled out if she doesn't start getting better soon. I was against the biopsy at first but IBD can turn into cancer, so we can't let it go. :(

Well, from what I remember, by the 3rd and 4th month I was already so happy and thinking about weaning him off.

How long has she been on it? Does she get a tiny bit just once a day?

Oh, we just started (yesterday), so we will give it a couple weeks. It's twice a day. She was on Metronidazole for over a month but it stopped working. Hopefully the protein change in her diet will do some good too.

Why does your vet want to do a surgical biopsy? I talked to Lacy's specialist today and she was diagnosed with some small intestinal disease and biopsy was brought up (although we aren't doing it at this point). She said they do endoscopic biopsies where they just get a sample of the mucosa and lining. The surgical gets a full thickness (an actual chunk of intestine).

The vet wanted a full thickness biopsy because endoscopic can be inconclusive. I think it has to do with only getting the top part with endoscopy whereas with full thickness things lke lymphosarcoma can be ruled out. It is just more thorough.

Great but she still has loud stomach noises.
Since I added fish oil to her diet (per nutritionist), I think her food isn't setting as well though.:rolleyes: At this point though, I am liking Tylan a lot. Metronidazole worked well too though but then stopped working... So we will see.

I tried the Metro on TJ 2x and it did not make his episodes any better at all.

Are you adding Vit E too?

Tylan can be used long term, with very minimal if not any side effects. I don't think it should stop working. I was told if it is gonna work, it will and if not, no.

When I was able to wean TJ off, which I went to every other day, then every 2 days, then every 3 days. I think I was down to every 6th day (thank goodness for calendars ;)) my Vet said I can stop, but that the good news is that Tylan worked for him, and if need be we can go back to it :thumbup:

She does have vit. e in her supplement I think. So she may be getting some. I have heard about the body using vit. e to process fish oil, so it needs to be given but her nutritionist didn't say anything about it and I know she would've if it was important... I was giving her 400 IU capsules for her liver but stopped a long time ago and am still deciding if we want to do it again.

I mean, right now she is getting Tylan twice a day, clavamox twice a day, probiotics once a day, cosequin every other day, balance it with her food and fish oil with her food and Denosyl once a day. Right now I just think she is on way too many things. :( The Clavamox will be done in two weeks though.

That would be nice if it continues working. I would be relieved. :) These excessive stomach noises need to stop though.
