Bully Sticks Have you all ever tried these for your dog~? I was told about them and had someone at Petsmart to help me find them today. They are expensive, does anyone know why~? What are they made of, it doesn't say on the package. They told me there that I use let him chew on them for about an hour and then take it away. Can these make dogs nauseated~? I just found something that looked like he got sick, but I didn't hear him hacking. Maybe it was the bully stick he chewed off, I don't know. |
My dogs LOVE them. They are much safer than rawhide  Oh, and they are made from the large tendon of a bull's penis  |
Bully Sticks are very popular and are a great alternative to rawhide. The ones you'll find at PetSmart and big box stores are expensive and low quality. Most the time they also smell really bad. Introducing it slowly by only letting them chew on it for a certain amount of time is a good way to be sure they don't consume too much at first and make their stomach upset, especially if you have a dog with a sensitive tummy. Remember all Bully Sticks are not equal. |
Bully sticks are a bulls penis! I never let my dogs have them because I can't stand the thought!!!! i hear they smell after a while but I don't no for sure! |
Yes, I heard about Bully Sticks on Yorkietalk, and they're a favorite of Joey's. I did learn that Bully Stick is a generic term, and any company can call itself that. A bully stick should be 100% digestible, and is made from beef tendons, which are made from a bull's penis. It's important that these are dried properly, and some bully sticks use preservatives, and have expiration dates. I've only used Merrick Bully sticks, and you can occasionally find them on eBay, for a little more than $2.00 a stick, there are no added preservatives, and no expiration date, a product that is properly dried doesn't need one because the drying process acts as a preservative. A 6-inch stick lasts all week and he chews on it all the time, they are very hard, and I believe that they help the teeth and gums stay healthier. The evening seems to be his favorite time, and we usually have to hold it while he chews on it. (I've spoiled him.) Be cautious with sticks, with price increases many companies are importing them to compete, and many of the imports are probably coming from China. Here's a link to the Merrick company, but you can find them on eBay, and Amazon for less. Merrick Pet Foods - Dog Treats |
Mia loves the bully sticks. I always give it to her then I need her to leave me alone for a few. I never let her have it more than an hour or two. They are a bulls penis dryed. I just found out that you can buy vanilla ones that dont smell as bad..... |
Bully for Bullysticks! I found bullysticks by asking my local pet store owner about a product that would distract Bear from chewing on my furniture as he teethed. :animal-paI intoroduced bitter apple to the household and gave Bear a bullystick instead. He never chewed on anything else- ever. It remains one of his favorite chews. They were 99 cents then and are expensive now, but I reccomend them for your dog if they chew on household items or furniture. Cheers- |

Are you serious that they are made out of a "Bull's Penis"? That is absolutely gross. If I would of known that, I would have not purchased them (luckily I got a 3 pack). Giving him meat products is rough enough on me since I am vegetarian. I saw that they were in the rawhide section and had no info on them of what they were made out of. It did say the USA, so I was okay with that. Thanks, I will check Ebay. I sell on there and have purchased numerous of dog items. Bull's Penis~? Still can't get over that one~! |
I have 7 yorkies and 1 huge Akita/Husky mix. They love bully sticks. I was scared to try them because I didn't want to deal with the smell everyone talks about. I tried AMD's (www.WestbrookDog.com) and my dogs are crazy about them. And there is no "bad" smell whatsoever, it just smells like rawhide. And they are so much less expensive than any other place I have found. They have been on sale lately and I just ordered I think 18 or so. I think their 5" is on sale for .68 cents but if they aren't they are only normally .99 cents. I like the curly ones so I can watch their little paws hold on to them. :) All of my yorkies consider AMD at WestbrookDog.com their very best friend. |

You could try to think of it as the Indians do, when they killed an animal every part of it had to be used for something, and this was meant to show respect to the animal. By the way, rawhides are not 100% digestible; a small part could cause an obstruction in the intestines, and bully sticks won't do this. |
I have tried them a few times but decided against getting them again. While they did love them, they loved them too much and fought over them. I went through them in no time and I was worried about them choking on the end pieces. |

I have to say the visual of a little Yorkie gnawing on a dried bull penis is just too hysterical. The visual I have of that is too funny!:eyetearss |
Nikko has had Red Barn and Merrick's bully sticks before, both of which were quite stinky - and quite expensive as well. Just a few days ago, I got a free sample from AMD at www.WestbrookDog.com, and I love it (and more importantly, Nikko loves it too). Just PM her and ask nicely. :-) It isn't stinky like the other ones we'd been getting, and it looks like it was dried more naturally... the other ones looked like they had been put in a mold or something weird to get a specific shape. I'll definitely be getting my bully sticks from westbrookdog from now on (thank you AMD! and by the way, my mom's dog loved her sample bully stick as well!). After this bully stick, I definitely agree that not all of them are created equal! Lauren & Nikko PS: We're also particularly fond of the curly bully sticks... I think they're easier for Nikko to hold on to while he gnashes on them. |
safe for puppies? Are these "bully sticks" safe for new puppies, or are they too rich for them? |
