Diarrhea, does anyone have something that works? My Yorkie had sudden onset diarrhea starting Tuesday, went to the Vet on Wednesday......it is not resolving one little bit. Purchased Plantaeris on Petwellbeing.com. A lot of posts on that site had very good success with it. It arrived today and I've administered the first dose but he's still got diarrhea. If this doesn't work, does anyone on here know of something that actually works? I need help......he's off all solid foods due to vomiting. I'm so worried about him. Please, if someone can help me I'd be so appreciative. Thank you. |
Welcome to YT! Sorry your poor baby is dealing with this. Go buy a can of pure pumpkin. (Not the pumpkin spice for pies) Give your baby a spoonful or so to eat. This will help. Also, pumpkin will work when you have the opposite problem -- it's good for both things. You may want to offer some Pedilyte also - to help replenish some of the fluids, etc |
Yorkiesmiles is right- pure canned pumpkin works WONDERS! Did the vet say what was causing the diarrhea? |
Oh, I just noticed you said he is also vomiting - what did your vet say? It sounds serious. He may need some medicine. I go to a holistic vet & he gives my dogs this herbal treatment called Early Comfort --- I'll go see if I can find a link for you. When you go to the store also buy some chicken broth - like Swanson's low sodium broth. Offer this for a couple days - especially for the vomiting, in a few days you may be able to give chicken soup |
Here is a link to what is in the Early Comfort -- perhaps you could consult with a holistic vet Early Comfort by Kan-Acu-Market : acupuncture, homeopathy, herbal & organic Also, if you want to make your own broth this is a recipe that a Bettyeanne on YT has used with great success http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/1978087-post75.html Please come back and update |
Hi and Welcome to YT! I am so sorry that your baby is sick. It's very important that he drink, especially if he is vomiting. The link that Yorkiesmiles posted for my "Nonnie's Magic Broth" is wonderful to use when they won't eat or drink! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/1978087-post75.html They also love the chicken as it is so tender you can almost mash it up with your fingers. If you don't have time to make this ... I have used the Swanson's Low Sodium Chicken Broth [canned] and my Toto will drink that but not like she laps up the fresh broth. I will keep your baby in my prayers. Please update us and if there is anything more that you need, just post here. |
Thank you all so much for your suggestions.....I'll try to locate the pure pumpkin.....is it available in most grocery stores? The Vet didn't have a diagnosis. Gave me antibiotic and anti-nausea medication.....and gentle dog food too.....from. If I could find a Holistic Vet in this area I would go in a heartbeat. The Plantaeris I mentioned is holistic....it's 100% herbal. I have given him Yogurt for the good bacteria he needs and Gatorade for the electrolyes he also needs. He was hydrated at the Vets office on Wednesday.....blood work didn't indicate anything out of the norm. He's very hungry but because he vomited less than 24 hours ago (though not a lot) I have been trying to keep him away from anything other than liquids. I am hoping and praying that he can get through the night without vomiting.....if he can do that I'd consider myself half way there (to healing). His diarrhea seems to have slowed a bit.....but is not even close to being resolved I'm afraid. Any and all suggestions would be so very welcomed at this point. I am frantic to get him better. I am medically trained but not Veteranary medicine I'm afraid. Thank you so much everyone.:aimeeyork |
Where might I find the Pure Pumpkin? At any grocery store or at a specialty store? Thank you for the suggestion. |
I would stop the yogurt until you get the diarrhea under control. Yes, you can find canned pumpkin at all grocery stores -- it should be down the baking isle. I'll get you some links to see if you can find a holistic vet. |
I heard Pepto Bismol is safe to give to dogs. Just a little, like 2 ml for a 5 lb dog. Hope your baby gets well soon! |
Has he lost any weight?? I would suggest taking him back to the vet to run some tests. Deegan was sick like that in the fall - lost two pounds in 2 weeks... They ran 3 sets of test before they diagnosed him with EPI (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency) which basically means his pancreas is shot and he's not digesting ANYTHING I gave him... It could be something serious so like that so I would highly advise insisting on some blood work. Twice Deegan's blood work came back clear, but finally they ran a TLI test which included cobalamin & folate... Good luck and let us know what happens. |
Here is holistic vet organization AHVMA - Home - click on the tab that says Find A Holistic Vet - a new window will open for you to look by your area. I go to an acupuncture / holistic vet - you might also check for an acupuncture vet, I think a lot of them use holistic medicines. Here are 2 links to find an acupuncture vet. American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture » AAVA Directory The International Veterinary Acupuncture Society - oops their site is having problems - but you can call them & see if they can find a vet in your area Phone: (970) 266-0666 Fax: (970) 266-0777 Email: office@ivas.org |
I had never heard of Plantaeris before - but I just looked it up. Interesting herbal formula. I see that they cite Dr. Pitcairn - who I think is pretty right on. How quickly is this suppose to work? I would say if you have only done one dose - it isn't long enough yet. I know the pumpkin works fast, but if your little one has been sick for awhile, it's going to take time for the body to right itself. I would say if he still has diarrhea & vomiting in the morning - I would be back at the vet's office tomorrow. Please keep us updated. |
Thank you Once again, thank you all for your invaluable input. For the first time in days I don't feel alone anymore. Yogurt will encourage diarrhea? I thought it would be good for him. Yikes.......I will not give him anymore. I am glad to report it's been a couple of hours since his last bout with diarrhea. If only this can last....and stop. This is a wonderful site. I am so glad you are all here to advise me and encourage me. What a wonderful thing you are all doing. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.:heart79: |

Lola has a sensitive tummy too, and my vet recommended 2mg of Pepcid AC. It's a 1/4 of a pill (Lola is 4 lbs...not sure how much yours weighs). I really do think you should take your dog back to the vet (or a different vet), because that has happened to Lola before and they gave her a couple shots for the nausea, some liquid in a shot, so she didn't get dehydrated, and then some prescription food for sensitive tummy's. Lola felt a million times better the next day. We were away on a trip so I had to go to a different vet, but he really helped her feel better. I think you should see someone else who will give you some better results....it's SO hard when your baby is sick! I hope she feels better soon!! P.S. Did you switch food recently?? Do you think it could be the food she's eating? What about giardia? Lola's had that before, it's pretty common. Good luck....we'll be praying for you and your little one. :aimeeyork |
