Chloe (10 weeks) won't eat out of her dish! My girl, Chloe absolutely will not eat her food out of her dish. It's almost like she is afraid of it. As soon as I put some food on the floor or in my hand, she gobbles it up like crazy! Anyone else have this problem? It's not the food, she LOVES the food, I can tell! It's just the dish. It's stainless steel, I thought maybe she was scared of her reflection so I use a ceramic bowl now, but no..still scared! She even drinks her water out of the stainless steel dish. What is going on with this gal! Thanks! |

Wow..... I was just going to post this very same thing One of my pups does this too I thought it was because they're breeder used to feed them with their dry food on the floor But every since I've had them and they are 4 months now My Mike cannot seem to be able to eat out of a bowl until his brother comes and shows him each time On the floor and out of my hand NO Problem But put him in front of a bowl he pushes it around and cries  and sometimes he'll nose the dish as if he wants to push out the food |
Dixie does the same thing! I always thought it was because she wasn't a big fan of her food. But, I just changed it and she wont eat her new food out of her dish either. Weirdo! |
Lucas did this when he was about that age too. I would put a bit in my hand, and sort of lure him towards the bowl, and slowly put my hand with the food in the bowl. Then he sort of caught on and started eating. He just needed a little coaxing. Also, it seemed like he needed to have less distractions around when we fed him (toys, etc.). Patience, I think, is key with the eating. We also put a bit of shredded carrot over the kibble, and he loved that too. Maybe give it a try? |
milu doesn't like to eat out of the dish either. honestly, i think it's kind of good that your baby wants to eat out of your hand. when i went to puppy school with milu, they told us to hand feed the dogs and play with their food while they eat. this way the dogs will learn to not bite people when people try to take away their food, and also, they will learn to have soft mouth and being careful not to bite your hand when you are feeding them. ;) |

thank you for sharing the video. how old is Chloe? what a doll she is. is she your new puppy? are the other two doggies gus and squirt? :D:D:D |
Does she wear a collar? Maybe it hits the bowl and scares her. That was happening to my youngest, Junior. I had to take his tags off. He eats well now. |
I'm in the same dilemna as well. Orion won't eat out of the bowl. He only wants to be hand fed or have bits of food left on the floor. I'm just hoping that this will not become a bad habit of his. I've tried to hand feed and lure him to the bowl, but he's so stubborn and won't go near it. |
this is an amaze a ball JW Pet Amaze-A-Ball Treat Ball for Dogs at PETCO you place there kibble in it and the idea is the pup has to work for there food. They push the ball and the food dispenses it is a great mental excercise for them as well. I have been using one with Milo for over 2 years he loves it. I know it says it is for treats, but we were told about it by our dog trainer to use for his food. |

this is what happened to Edie. Her tags would hit the metal bowl and it would scare her. |
Gucci did the whole eating off the ground thing for about 1 month, it had started with eating out of my hand then it turned into eating off the floor but he wouldn't eat unless it was on the ground after that point for about 1 month literally. But after a while I stopped putting it on the ground for him and he began eating out of the dish .. took about a week or so to re-train if you will. You will soon find out that YORKIES WILL TRAIN YOU if you let them!! I learned that exactly where we are now on YT asking why my baby won't eat unless it's in my hand lol. Hope that helps!! |
I had the exact same problem. It must be a Yorkie thing. My yorkie is 8 months old and I still have to play games with her to eat. I've noticed if I use a small glass pinch bowl she will eat out of that sometimes. Maybe it just doesn't seem so overwhelming if there's not a big bowl with a lot of food in it. She still picks up a piece and throws it up in the air and then pounces on it before she will eat it. I still have to hand feed her though sometimes just to make sure she eats. She only weighs 1lb 6oz and I can't take a chance on her not eating for too long, so what ever it takes.;) |
LOL! Sounds like she playing you for attention. Maybe some play time would make her hungry enough to eat out of the bowl. |
She is spoiled...that's for sure! You are probably right. It truly does make you worry though when they literally don't eat all day long unless you put it right in front of their face and practically plead with them. I just give her Dyne in the morning if she won't eat and glucose gel or whatever later in the day, just to make sure her sugar doesn't get low. Maybe she's just following my routine of not eating all day and eating at night. Ooops...not a good roll model. She seems healthy and happy though, so I guess she's okay.:animal-pa |
Have you tried to put the food on a plate? I use the little tea cup plates for my Jeter's food because he wont eat out of the bowls. |
Don't be discouraged, our Prada won't eat out of her dish unless we sit next to it and ignore her. If we look at her, she runs away or just stares at us, but if we look the other way, she'll go and smell for about a minute then reluctantly eat. Some yorkie owners have told me that for a once in awhile treat, or to mix in with dry food every once in awhile are Cesar packs. They have a Bishon on the front and are about $.75 for each one. That might help. Just stick with it! |
OMG Teddy does that water thing too!!! what is that?! why do they go swimming in their waterbowls?! It's frustrating I'm constantly telling him to get out of it and then I try to give him a bath and he all of a sudden hates water. LOL as for the OP They say its a good training technique to hand feed them for awhile, well thats what our trainer said. Anyway I'm sure she will eat out of a bowl soon :) Teddy used to only eat out of a bowl if I was standing right beside him. |
It's more to scale... Quote:
Yes, that does help. Sometimes you can tell she just doesn't want to eat at all. She turns her face away. But she's doing better now. And I agree with you about the little teacup saucer. I let her have her chicken jerky as a treat if she will eat. Pretty bad having to bargain with with such a tny thing! lol:animal-pa |
