what does this mean?!? as soon as my yorkie is finished eating, he jumps onto the couch and starts digging, then he starts acting like he's having a seizure...he rolls on his back and starts moving like crazy. sometimes he'll swipe his body against the walls in my apartment as he walks. anyone have any clue? i can't see this as a sign of him being allergic to the food since he's been eating the same food since he was 2 months old (he's 9 months now). |
Sounds like a post-dinner burst of energy! My shiba rubs himself all over our couch and makes all kinds of crazy noises. Since it's only after he eats - I dont' think it is anything serious. But if you are really concerned, it doesn't hurt to call or visit your vet, just to make sure everything is okay! |
Haha Snick does the same. I actually think it is b/c he feels wet. He gets on his back and rolls around and all over and scrubs his paws on the floor and rubs his sides on the carpet. He does the same after he has been out in the snow. I know for sure he smashes his face into the floor after drinking water b/c he hates being wet. I give him a little canned with his kibble and I guess he thinks his whole body is wet after eating. Oh the tendencies!!! They are silly...I doubt he is allergic...Ha! |
I think your baby just feels great. Both of mine do this. Bella does it sometimes before she gets the zoomies and Chloe will do it every time I remove her clothes. |
Hope it's just him having fun...but has he been Bile Acid tested? Does he do this after every meal? |
phew! glad it's nothing serious! thanks everyone for the input! |
Most likely he's just excited and acting normal. My male, Rylie will rub on my couches and stairs when he walks by sometimes, especially after I put his hair up or put clothes on him. And my female, Lacy will rub her face on the carpet if it gets wet...so if he eats a moist food, he might be drying his face. However, it is possible that something could be going on. The actions you described can be common symptoms of a liver shunt, especially being right after he eats. The walking and rubbing against walls especially. Many times you will also see circling, head pressing, and sometimes seizures. Not all liver shunt dogs show symptoms though...and it's possible that if he does have a liver issue that he could just now be developing symptoms. I always think it's a good idea to have yorkies bile acid tested while they are still puppies since liver issues are so common in the breed. Also, it is possible that he could have developed an allergy to his food. Have you noticed any other scratching, chewing on self, or gastrointestinal upset? |
I agree with Myfairlacy. He needs to be bile acid tested. Seizures and walking along walls after eating are definite symptoms. |

My Mya and my Lab do the same thing. I think it is just a burst of energy and cleaning the crumbs off. |
I thought it was a cleaning rountine. But now these other posts have got me wondering! Better safe then sorry is my motto. Check with the vet. |
And please keep us updated. Now its got me worried! |
From what I've read, the sooner you test for Liver Shunt the better, as treatment can begin before too much damage is done. Some people recommend all yorkie owners test for it, and I definitely think if there are any symptoms that could indicate this, you should test for it. Best of luck! |
Chelsea does the same and I went to my vet and indicated she was doing this after eating or playing outside, bath, etc, the vet said that's just their way of scratching, clean and not to worry it normal. I had all blood test and all is fine. Chelsea is 2 yrs and has done this since the being. Even in the morning when waking up she scratches rolls like crazy. I think it's a dog trade. My Maltese will rub when hair is up and clothes R on her. If their poop is fine and not getting sick vomit etc yr fine, do they eat all their food, does it stay in. Are they losing weight if not that's just the way our Yorkie are. |
