Severe Pancreatitis
 
I have a 5 year old Yorkie, named Hurricane. He is a member of a large family and lives with lots of kids (ie, table food). He has never had any health issues, but he's overweight. He started throwing up on Saturday, and by Sat night we took him to the emergency vet hospital. They diagnosed him with pancreatitis and have had him on iv's since then. This morning we moved him to our regular vet, and he is on iv's there. His numbers are still increasing, and our vet just called to say that he's doing an ultrasound to rule out cushings disease. I am very upset/nervous and wanted to see if anyone out there has had experience with pancreatits and could let me know if it is normal that the numbers increase after 24 hours of fluids. We all feel terrible and resposible for causing this horrible and painful health problem for Hurricane, by mixing table food in with his dog food. I am praying that we will get him home and will be able to give him the proper nutrition that he needs and deserves. Any help would be so appreicated. Thank you.

I am so sorry you are going through this. There are many people on here who's pups have pancreatitis- mine included- however Layla's was very mild and caught early so i'm sorry that i am of no help. But i'm sure some of our other members who are dealing with this will come on and shed some light. I'll be thinking of you and your sweet baby today!

I can speak from experience that the numbers will go up. My yorkie who just passed had it. If I can give you any advice, make sure you take whatever steps you need to in order to make sure that he gets quality care. The people on this site are really educated when it comes to everything yorkie. Listen to them. They have educated me in many ways.

Thank you. I wish I knew about this site before. I could have been doing a much better job taking care of Hurricane and am just so upset with myself for not giving him proper nutrition.

also- when he comes home he will need to be on a STRICT low fat diet! this is the MOST important thing. I consulted a dog nutritionist and had a diet specially made for Layla and her condition- she gets supplements daily and her numbers have gone from 720 down to the 500's (Our vet considers under 400 normal.. might be different where you are) and she is going to get tested again at the end of the month and i'm hoping with the low fat diet and her suppelemtns that she should be back under 400! The nutritionist i used is Dr. Susan Davis at Holistic Veterinarian Pet Nutritionist Holistic Pet Care - she does phone consultations after you fill out an online form. she has saved MANY a dogs' life here on YT!

don't beat yourself up. We've all been there- i fed Layla horrible food when i first got her- i just didn't know any better- but now you do and when he comes home you'll know how to help him. It is also very important that he loose weight- the extra pounds are very hard on their knees. But with his new low fat diet i'm sure he'll be dropping the pounds in no time :) Some great low fat treats are fruit and veggies- even cherrios- just no grapes or onions or mushrooms.

Thank you. His numbers are so much higher - his lipase was 17, 231 and his amylase was 4726 (this number is still increasing, but the lipase has gone down).

Keep us posted when you hear more! Hopefully he will turn the corner soon and both will be coming down.

Sorry the numbers i posted were from the Spec test Layla had done- originally her Lipase was in the 10,000.

Definitely do not beat yourself up. Any number of things can cause it, not just food, but genetics as well. You are doing the most important thing now, researching on how to help.

My girl has had it but it was pretty mild.
Did the vet do a Spec cPL?

It isn't that mixing human food with their food is so bad.
It is they type of human food.
His diet will have to be very strict from now on because one very small piece of fatty meat found on the floor could trigger a recurrence.

I will check on the spec cpl. Thank you. I am meeting my vet at 5:30 tonight to see where Hurricane stands. He is having an ultrasound done now to rule out anything else. Just trying to hang in here. Thanks for all of the support.

Thank you. My kids and I are praying for the best. We pray that we will be asking for good nutrition tips tomorrow. This is such a wonderful forum, and I appreciate all of the great advice and support.

Oh so sorry to hear about your baby Huricane. Izzy was just diagnosed with Pancreatitis this past November. I'm at work so I don't have her numbers when she was admitted. She was in the hospital for 2.5 days and has been symptom free since then..knock on wood.;)

She is on a low-fat, low-protein diet with no doggie treats except for some Cheerios now and then. For now she is on that nutty Science Diet ID (was on WD for two months to get her tummy settled down).

Izzy was on the best food ever and she still got it so don't beat yourself up. I would going forward not give him any table food that is loaded with fat or very high protein.

Keep us posted on his progress.
