Grain free foods Are grain free foods better for dogs with allergies? Do they pump up the protein to make up for the lack of grain? How much protein is too much, and what could it do to them. Can someone recommend some good grain free foods that they've used with success. Piper is such a picky eater. |
there is no such thing as too much protein unless your dog has liver issues. Grain free foods are naturally higher in protein as there is no grain so the percentage of protein naturally increases. I like grain free- i don't feel dogs need grains and they are the root of many allergies and often just used as fillers. Orijen is grain free, Natural Balance has grain free varieties and Merrkicks has a new food- BG- Before Grain. |
We feed Wellness Core (Regular and Ocean) as well as Nature's Variety Instinct (Chicken and Turkey/Duck). My dogs have thrived on it! :thumbup: |

It's really funny you asked this question. A week or two I started a thread about dog foods, etc. Well, most people will tell you vets don't know much about dog foods, well, I did find out yesterday, my vet(and yeah, she does sell some purina foods) is very good with allergies and testing. She said that some dogs aren't as allergic to foods with corn as they are certain meats in the "expensive foods". I'm going to do some more talking to her on these expensive versus purina foods when we have time to talk and see what else she has to say. I'm also going to talk to her about the grains, proteins, etc. |
lol.. BUt the vet isnt making money off these grainb free foods..lol.. he/she is making money off the crappier food.. And I stand behind the fact that vets no didly squat about foods. |

I feed Suzi a kibble called By Nature... It is grain free, and scored a 4 on the pre. dog food list. So I am now giving Suzi canned food by the same company that scored a 6 on the list... She loves this brand of food. :aimeeyork |

YOur dog should do fine on a HIGH protien food. IF he/she is getting to USE the protein. Putting a dog on high protein foods is not a good idea without getting a good amount of excersize. When excersizing, the muscles accually tear. And They use the protein to repair them. Making them stroger. If The muscles dont need the protein, It will go to waste. It will have to be processed through the liver. Which in turn can cause liver problems. Them the protein will most likely be lost through the waste material. After some is used to make pretty and shiney hair! lol .. So a high protein food is, in my opinion, only good when your dog is getting exsersize. lol |
lol.. funny.. Anyways.. Umm if shes selling it, shes making money off it. She studied "lots" about dogs and allergies. You mention nothing about FOOD. What does being old have to do with it? And old vet would have more experiance, and i would be more inclined to take an old vets word as a grain of salt. |
