puppy teeth help!
 

my puppy is 5 months and all his bottom baby teeth feel off perfectly and are growing back, his top teeth tho havent fallen off and is gums on the top are a little swollen and red and i see 1 or 2 adult teeth growing in behind the baby teeth and his gums a SLIGHTLY blackish redish ( no i dont brush his teeth im not gonna lie )

if i neuture him and have his baby teeth pulled, will that be an extra charge ? around how much does the pulling cost?:confused:

hang tight...my boy is 6.5 mos and about 2 weeks ago his teeth were fallin' out right and left(no lie, 4 within 36 hours!). I always made sure he had plenty of chew toys and I think it helped that he eats hard food/treats. Good luck!

Yes, you could try giving him some chew toy that may help with further loosening the teeth. I gave my little girl a bully stick to chew on and 'voila' her teeth fell out. However, there were some baby teeth that wouldn't come out had to be extracted when she was spayed. The vet charged $20 per teeth and I had to have 7 teeth removed, so it cost me $140.

My vet said this is common in smaller dogs and the best time to do it is when they are getting fixed. Our little one got fixed when he was 5 months old and they checked for extra teeth then and he had none. then at 6 months old he had 8 canine teeth (4 on top and 4 on the bottom). I went to have them checked and the vet is giving us till the end of Feb for them to come out and if not they will have to put him under to extract them. the cost for all 4 teeth is just over 300.00 because they have to put them under (it was like 20 per tooth so the rest is other fees) So it is better to do it when they are going to be under for being fixed in my opinion, one it cost less and two he won't have to go under twice. He has lost 3 of the 4 teeth and the other one looks like it will fall out soon. we have been giving him anything that his hard to chew on to help with this.

My little guy was 6 months old, and had to have 12 baby teeth pulled as the adult teeth were coming in. of course we are in California and everything is more expensive here, but it was around $300 for the teeth alone.

Aside from being invoiced for services not rendered, the vet fees involving the dental work comes out as follows (in Canadian funds, of course):

A) 1st consultation with new/referred vet (decided to use a different vet recommended by another yorkie owner who just had her little boy's teeth done) + typical puppy wellness/physical exam + pre-op bloodwork = $221.

We need to smack husbands who pay blindly without reading invoices, and wives who say, "Oh well, we'll just forget it since I don't plan on going back to him again and it's a long drive away."

So anyway, the amount it costs seem to vary depending on time required, the anesthetic used, and how many anesthetic technicians they have on monitoring duty during the operation.

That last tooth left in is still firmly in place and causing gum inflammation and definite bloody breath when prior to the dental work, even with retained puppy teeth, her breath wasn't so bad. I believe she's swallowing her own blood regularly which is obviously bad for her health. The lint and strings from her chew toys' fabrics wrapped around between her tiny adult and baby tooth aren't helping either. So get them all pulled at once when you do decide to go get it done so you wouldn't have to put your baby through the same discomfort twice! Use this waiting time to research a good, honest, reliable vet!

My 6 month old has extra canine teeth too! I'm hoping the baby teeth fall out but if not, do they HAVE to be extracted? From what she lets me investigate, she has 2 adult ones growing in on the inside of the baby ones on the bottom. If it turns out the baby ones don't come out on their own, can I just leave them there?

Ok, I could really use some help clarifying things, if you all wouldn't mind.

1. I've heard you're supposed to neuter at 6 months hopefully to avoid marking. And you hopefully get the baby teeth pulled when you neuter.
2. And dogs start teething between 4-6 months (does teething mean loosing baby teeth I guess?)
3. But adult teeth don't come in until 6 months or later, so far as I understand.

How does this work? Do dogs go without many of their teeth for awhile? Do I have some of my information wrong?

Just a thought......I only had one tooth do this becaseu it was left behind after neuter /tooth removal. The swollen led to infection. One day fine ...next dayin unbearable pain. we ended up extracting ours.

I am not sure if you can leave them in, both my vet and my daughter who works at a vet in another state, said the canine should be pulled if the baby ones don't fall out. from what I can tell he only has extra canine (go figure). your little one is 6 months old, mine is giving him till he is 9 months to let the other ones fall out so it would seem you have time. give him lots of things to chew. have you talked to your vet yet to see what they say?

I think #3 isn't correct. When dogs teeth, the permanent tooth is supposed to loosen the baby tooth as it comes in, so the baby tooth is supposed to fall out as the permanent comes in under it. However, sometimes with smaller dogs especially, the permanent tooth will grow in behind it instead of under it (I think because the baby tooth wasn't budging??) AND, I want to say, that once a dog starts teething, they will have all their permanents in in 3-4 weeks. I think Bella started teething at 4 or 5 mo. old and when she was spayed at 6 mo. old, they extracted 9 baby teeth and said that all of her permanents were already in. So, it may depend on the dog, but in our case, all of her permanents were in at 6 mo. and 2 wks. of age.

If you just leave the extra teeth there, 2 things will happen: 1) the extra tooth makes an extra space that isn't normally there, so food sticks there and causes decay of both the permanent and the baby tooth that the food is in between, and 2) baby teeth aren't "built to last" sort of speak, so they will start decaying (rotting actually) because they aren't meant to be there forever.

Decay causes bad breath, PAIN, and can cause MUCH bigger problems because infection in the mouth can get directly into the blood stream. (For example, human patients who have had joint replacements, heart valve replacements, or other kinds of heart disease, have to be treated prophylactically with antibiotics before they can even have their teeth CLEANED because cleaning teeth can cause bacteria to get into the blood stream--through the gums I believe. It just doesn't seem possible to me, but it must be or it wouldn't be such a big deal!)

Fiona lost all but 1 baby tooth by the time she turned 5 months old. Typically puppies will swollow them or they will just fall out, not a problem. When she got spayed they extracted her one baby tooth, and my vet only charged me $8.00 for it. I would just monitor your baby, and if you get him neutred they will probably just pull it out. Don't worry, he should be fine.

my situation mentioned earlier, my kirby was 16 months ...the baby tooth had stayed in unnoticed.... until a canine tried to share it's sapce for too long....disaster! so gald we got it pulled, but it was an ordeal, he couldnt chew on that side due to the pain .... and he needed antibiotics

My Piper was spayed at 7 months and at the same time had 4 teeth removed. The vet charged $10. After reading what some of you had to pay, I guess I got a really good deal. I have been using the same vet for the last 20 years.
