| bully sticks Are the bully sticks from Wal-Mart ok to give my puppy? I threw away the packaging they came in so I don't know the name brand. (There was a tiny hole in the package and I was afraid they would stink up my pantry, so I took them out and put them in a zipoloc baggie.) Boy do those things stink!!!!!! Also, do I give it to him to chew on till it's gone, or only for short periods of time? Thanks! ~Crystal |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I only use the Merrick brand, they have a proven track record, I don't really think they smell that bad either. Lots of dog products are being made in China, and I don't believe they have a very good track record for safely. It takes an awful lot of dogs to become sick over something before the public will hear about it, the bigger companies sometimes get more attention on recalls, but that because they sell so many more than the smaller companies. Some Bully sticks are made with preservatives, and some are made with an expiration date, the Merrick brand isn't made with preservatives and because of a drying process they don't need an expiration date. Any chew toy should be supervised, so you could use the chew toy, and see if there was any type of problem with it, any vomiting or diarrhea, throw the stick away. The better sticks are really hard and meant to be chewed not eaten. A 6-inch stick usually lasts a week. Lots of different brands are strong smelling and the dogs don't seem to mind this part.

| I never leave my girls with any type of chew, be it bully sticks or anything else. They are allowed to chew till there is around 2" left and then I take them away because I've had cases where one of my girls has tried to swollow them whole at about 1" long when she's thought my other girl was going to take them. I also don't let them chew them for longer than a day before throwing them away after a friend of mine, (another YT member), Yorkie got very sick from the bacteria that grows on them once they have chewed them for a few hours. Depending how old your puppy is I would only let them chew for an hour and take it away to make sure they don't upset their tummy.

| Bully sticks threads are popping up everywhere. Yeah bully sticks do stink...they are bull penises after all . I gave my dog bully sticks as a pup and he did fine on them. If you're worried about the smell you could try some better smelling treats like Bright Bites, or using toys. |
