Need Help Well I was wondering my yorkie has had a cough for 3 months..He had it since I picked him up from pet store (i know big mistake.now.now as yt member i know better) My question is I was wondering if I could take him to park because he does not have his rabies shot...since he has a cough the doctor said he cannot get the rabies shot right now |
You should not expose other dogs to your little fella. It sounds like he might have kennel cough and it is very very contageous -- he may remain contageous for months after the cough goes away. Rabies would not be a huge concern except for laws that require dogs in public places to be vaccinated. Here in Georgia, if a dog bites someone and it is not current with it's rabies vaccinaitons he is quarrantined for two weeks and the owner is given a citation complete with a fine. |
okay...i just feel bad for him...because i wanna walk him and there is always dogs around...so i just let him play in the yard..okay..i will wait till the cough goes away.... |
did the vet say anything about the cough because kennel cough is very very bad and you can even get it, he should be treated for it asap here's some info if you want to read up on it :) Kennel Cough (Infectious Tracheobronchitis) in Dogs |
3 months and still coughing? Poor guy. :( Has your vet given you any medicine? |
If the vet writes a medical waiver saying your pup can't get the vaccine while he is sick (doesn't work in all states), then he can go anywhere legally, but kennel cough is easily passed on to other dogs. |

I was talking about the rabies vaccine. Yes, if a dog has kennel cough, they should definately stay home. |

Actually older dogs very seldom get kennel cough, just young dogs. My pup got it 6 years ago at the vets office. At the time, I had 3 young pups and one older dog(the oldest one was 5 at the time), the other 2 young ones got it, but, the older one didn't. The vet said usually the older ones won't get it. |
I wouldn't expose him to other dogs right now. He might be suspectable to different things. |
