| I've Created A Little Monster... So I'm completely at fault, I've turned my little guy into a complete monster...it all started out with a bite or two of people food as a "treat" here and there...and also b/c I feel bad that he eats the same kibble day after day...bOrInG! Now 6 months later, everytime I eat something he is all up in my grill! If I refuse to give him any, he gets mad and loses patience, and starts barking at me! He will bark and bark and bark and bark and bark and BARK, until I give in and give him a bite of what I'm having. I'm really careful to not give him anything other than vegetables, cheese, fruits, and meats/fish, no breads, carbs or junk foods. But I am concerned about the long term effects of human food on my baby. He's about 7 lbs at 11 months. He is pretty tall and long, so it's not like he's round and tubby... Any advice on what to do about the little monster I've created? If I stop giving him human food, will he stop begging for it? Also, is it ok to give human food to pups occassionally just to mix up their diet a little? |

| Show him who's boss! When he starts to bark at you, ignore him, turn your back to him. They hate it when we ignore them. If he starts jumping up or doing something else to get your attention, tell him firmly, No! You have to let him know it's not o.k. to act like that. You also are going to have to stop feeding him from your plate, if that is really what you want to do. You can't tell him no one time and then give him something another time. Good luck! You can do it! ~Kathy

Thor's Human Donating Member | The food sounds fine, but your dog has learned that you will give him food, as long as he is reeeeeeeeeally persistent. You might want to try a mild negative reinforcer, like a can with pennies in it. Every time he barks, shake it. You could also try giving him a time out in another room. The number one thing though, is that if you want him to stop, you must decide that you will refrain from giving him a morsel no matter what. If you're going to give up and give him a treat, you may as well do it immediately. After all, he's a dog, he's got nothing better to do than bark at you if there's even a slim chance he'll get a nice snack out of it. Oh, and: you'll find lots of great threads here about how to make your sweetie's food more interesting. You can give him lots of nice, healthy, varied meals, as long as you do it on your terms, not his. Last edited by QuickSilver; 01-02-2009 at 10:10 PM. |
