Actually, most vets blame commercial foods for the rise in pet diseases in the past few decades. Diabetes is a great example. Before commercial foods, diabetes was almost unheard of in cats and dogs. Now it is almost an epidemic. Lady's specialist explained that most commercial diets are loaded with carbohydrates because they are so cheap. Dogs and especially cats, don't have the ability to break down carbs because they are naturally carnivores. He said diabetes can be caused by diet alone, especially in cats, since carbs are sugar. Thank heavens there are really good premium pet foods on the market today. The cheaper foods like Purina are made from the waste from the human food industry. Have you ever read the API report? I agree on the carbs. Dogs absolutely need carbs, but not to the extent that many foods contain them. Also, there is the misconception that they should be given complex carbs (the view that bc they're better for humans, they're also better for dogs). Not true at all. Dogs actually have much more trouble breaking down complex carbs and this can lead to all sorts of problems. That's why it's best too feed simpler carbs (potatoes etc) to canines. There are interesting articles out there on this subject. I too am thankful that there are more premium ingredients out there and that some companies are basing their ingredient selection on more than just cost. :) |
