my new baby won't EAT my fur baby has not been home with me one week since i received her last weekend and she is not eating. it's been three days since she ate...like really ate. i couldn't take it anymore, so we took her to the vet this morning and he checked her out and suggested some things, we got a third different food and some more vitamins and baby dog food with a syringe. she is not eating at ALL. she'll lick the food but that's it. she won't even drink water. :( luckily she's okay per the vet. however, he told us we had to feed her because he didn't want her going another day without eating. we tried to feed her again by putting down the food. nothing. she won't even eat her nutracal vitamin! nothing. i even tried boiled chicken, etc. anyway, we had to fight with her to take the syringe food. and she's in great shape, playing and all, but won't eat. what's wrong with my fur baby? anyone else experienced this? |
Hello What age was your dog brought home, was he weeks months, normally a dog so young wont eat, did you get him from a pet shelter or breeder, was the breeder responsible? i could help if i knew what age you got him or weeks ect.. From toshcasmum |
thanks for asking. she's 11 weeks as of yesterday, and i got her on saturday, so 4 days ago. the breeder is highly responsible and well respected in this area. she's been doing this for years and came highly recommended, and she has a gurantee on her pups as well. sasha is playful and open, so it's just the eating. she's not withdrawn or anything like that. what do you recommend? |
Hello again =] Well, all i can suggest is that you feed her for light now as shes only 11 weeks old, Boild chicken could would help, a dog should go on to proper dog meat at about 15 weeks, just continue what to do by the way what age did the breeder sell, was it 10 weeks? |
I am by no means an expert on puppies but when we brought Max home the breeder sent us with a tube of Nutri-stat (or Nutri-cal to). Have you given the pup this? It will get the sugar level up and give it vitamins. Maybe if it "feels" better and more energetic it will stat to eat and get the eatting started. |

HAVE you called the breeder??? Ask them what to do ASAP. Also, I would post this on the Sick & Injured / Emergencies Talk Board here at Yorkie Talk. More responses. |

we did. we called last night. she suggest the nurtracal vitamin which i basically had to force feed her. i felt so bad. :( she also suggested calling the vet since we were doing everything "right." the first night home she ate the nutracal, after that - nothing. so that's why we took her to the vet this morning. the vet didn't find any problems at all pertaining to sugar levels, but he knows we have to feed her so that's why he gave us the baby dog food and the syringe. |

hi chrissy. i mentioned that vit in my post. we had that on hand from the day we got her. poor thing does not even want that. i basically have to put in in her little jaws on the side of her mouth. :( |
Will she not eat treats either? I know I just got one a month ago(she's now over 6 mos) and we went through that a couple different times when she wouldn't eat. Seems like if she's playing and is healthy, she would be working up an appetite. How much does she weigh? It could be she misses her littermates, this doesn't happen too much, but, it can happen. Is she the only dog you have? How far away is the breeder? If she's close, see if you can "borrow" one of the other pups to see if she will eat that way. |
get her some baby food meats, and mix a little with some ground steak. Do whatever it takes regardless of price to get her in the habit of eating right. Do not give any type of commercial type treats. You can try her on yogurt and cottage cheese. Even yogurt cheese is good for her. Try a scrambled egg with a little cheese. Just get her eating quickly!! |
She's still quite young and she could be really stressed, but yeah - you've got to get some food in her. You might try some cracker to settle tummy (or bread) - sometimes that stims the appetite. Also, try some peanut butter (dense in calories), bits of cheese (but not too much). Sprinkle parmesan on her dog food. A bit of cottage cheese. If it goes on, she may need to go to the vet for IV, which you hate to do. And if it goes on a long time, you'd need to consider a liver problem. Try not to worry though, it is probably just transition stress. You are mixing canned w/ kibble right? Canned is usually more smelly and appetizing. :) |
When I brought my little girls home, they wouldn't eat very well at first either. I made some rice baby pablumn, and mixed a little honey into it and put it on my finger. They would lick it off my fingers, I also hand fed them some broiled chicken breast ( no skin or fat) and make sure it is cool. I also left a little kibble down for them at all times. I still leave the kibble down and every so often I hear a crunch. I now make home cooked food for them, but I still leave a little high quality kibble down for them to munch on during the course of the day.:) ~Tammy |
The first couple days you had her, was she eating more normal or has she not wanted to the whole time? This is canned food you've tried, right? I guess at this point I'd liquify canned food as much as possible and syringe it, then don't let her open her mouth until she swallows (not choking her may be difficult though :( ). If she isn't eating soon, I'd get her on an IV. |
When we got Chanel for my Daughter we flew her from Missouri, and she arrived home in NJ about 5:00 pm, she was so distressed, she did not want to eat either, I got the nutri cal and put some in my finger and smeared it on her tongue and she would then swallow it, we did that for 2 days, I called the vet and he checked it out and she was fine, just needed sometime to adjust. I hope your baby starts eating soon, I know how worrysome can this be for you and the baby.. best of luck.. you gotten great advise here.. hugs, CArmen in nj |
Try Gerber Chicken meal, its for babies but puppies love it too. Rocky had it till he was 19 weeks old. Most Supermarkets have it. |
Try this I had the same problem with a little male. As hard as it is you just have to force feed them. What I thought worked best was a combination of Baby Rice Cereal (the first type that you feed babies) with a few drops of Karo syrup. Also if you get those baby hot dogs that come in the baby food jars (try feeding the baby hot dogs too) you can add some of the juice to the mixture. Mix it all up and put it on your finger and put it on the roof of her moth. You can also use a syringe. Any kind of protein baby food. If all else fails see if you can find: Freeze Dried 100% Beef Liver Treats for Dogs.Pro-Treats. I get mine from Pet Extreme. It's a cardboard container with pictures of dogs on it. My dogs do anything for these treats and it use to be the one thing my little one would eat. It's %100 protein, and not enough for the to be one alone but it puts something in their stomach. You can also go to your pet store and ask for samples of different dog food and just try them all out. Also buy the puppy formula mixed with the baby cereal. |
okay guys. i'm back for an update. i was so stressed out over sasha not eating. we had to force feed her with the syringe yesterday afternoon after the vet. took 45 mins to do because she fought with all her 2lb 8oz might! :( it was awful. later that evening she saw me eating yogurt and this was also around the time i needed to try to feed her again. i remembered the yogurt comment so i gave her some...she ate it all up. i was so happy and i praised her so well. then came time for her food. i was preparing to go to the store to get baby food and all...i'd been reading through all the comments here which have been so helpful. we put it down and she ate it...however the kicker is it's just the special dog baby food the vet gave us that has the vitamins in it. so we still have to test to see if she will eat the real food soon. i'll let you all know how is turns out. it could be anxiety. someone asked about her missing her litter. maybe? we do have a piece of the blanket from her litter with her too, so not sure. i try to give her so much attention - which is not hard at all. she's a baby so it just worries me so. i'll let everyone know how it goes. you all have been so helpful!! :) |
I would try putting the yogurt mixed with some of her food. If she likes the yogurt, why not give it a try??? :) |
