well we finally tricked her :D ... i add in a tiny bit of canned food (wellness core canned or NV canned) - just enough to coat the kibble a little bit and she is doing great! ... i know she will get bored with this soon though  so i will try yogurt, cottage cheese, parmesan cheese and the other great suggestions on this thread thanks so much everyone! we really appreciate it  |
Apparently I'm not the only one who has to add something to make the kibble more enticing. I have used cottage cheese, which has to be Gracie's favorite, plain yoghurt and a product made for this called Vita Gravy. |

We add a sprinkle of Missing Link (beef liver flavor) that we found at our groomers. I feed her Wellness - small bites, so a little in her bowl, run the hot water, sprinkle just a small amount over the dry kibble, and an just a small amount of the missing link, and swirl to mix. She loves it, and little does she know it is really good for her... sure not telling her that though!!:D:D This works for this fussy little eater like our's. Make sure you go really easy on the supplement at first as she/he will get loose stools otherwise! Just a word of caution, as we found out the hard way, then adjust as you see fit. The groomer has noticed such a change in her coat, and she is so much easier to brush out now! I absolutely love these two products and don't have to deal with canned food anymore! yeahhhhhhh!!!:eek: :):) Cheryl & Mandy |
The canned vs. kibble debate will be around forever I'm sure. I fed Ellie mostly kibble for way too long and now I'm wondering why I did that. My guess is that she got somewhat bored with it because who would want to eat that stuff everyday of their lives? She is much happier on homecooked. :) So, if I ever had to feed kibble again, I would at least supplement with other things or do lots of healthy treats to break up the boredom a bit (even if it does make them pickier), unless a medical problem prevented it. I think there are studies showing that with canned food, tartar builds up faster. There was some concern that these studies weren't done the right way and may be inaccuurate. While I think it may be true about canned and homecooked, Ellie had terrible build up when she was on kibble and now she is on homecooked and her teeth get brushed daily. They are much better now. I think brushing is very important and I don't think anyone should rely on regular kibble to clean their dogs teeth clean. It breaks when it hits the tip of the tooth, so there doesn't seem to be too much benefit from it. If you do want a kibble that cleans teeth, there is Science Diet T/D (and I'm not recommending it). This can reduce plaque by up to 39% because of the texture. |
