What do you feed your yorkie? Looking for Suggestions! Hey all! I am very new to yorkietalk, but am loving it so far! We are getting our very first Yorkie in January! We are very excited! I am looking for an all natural food that I can feed to her when she arrives. What did you feed your Yorkie when he/she was a puppy? Also, what do you feed them now. Looking for something that is all natural, but also not too expensive! Thanks for all your help!! :) |
I'm still feeding Turkleton the 'puppy' formula of BLUE Buffalo. He seems to like it fine. I got him the chicken the first time and just started him on a new bag of lamb and brown rice. It runs about $16 at PetSmart for a 6lb bag. It's all natural and loaded with good stuff. Have a look at the website if you want to read more about it... :) |
I feed PMR or Prey Model Raw. I find that it is actually less expensive than what I was feeding before but this is because I tell all my friends not to throw out freezer burnt meat and I ask hunters for donations so I actually haven't had to buy food for my dogs myself in about a month. But it's not for everyone but if it interests you, this is a really good thread about it.... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...odel-diet.html |
I feed "Go Natural - Grain Free" |
Solid Gold Wee bit |
I don't feed kibble- i home cook- but if i was going to feed kibble i'd feed Natural Balance. I like their ingredients- they have grain free options- great allergy formulas and since the recall- you can now go search your bar code and see the testing your bag went through- which i think is a great step towards accountability! But just make sure whatever you choose that real protien (vennison, fish...duck... rabbit) are the first few ingredients. Don't buy any food that has ANY bi products, corn or wheat. Food can be confusing! But you are doing a great job by looking into it now before your baby arrives :) Keep her on whatever food she arrives with for a few weeks until she adjusts to your home and then slowly make the transition. |
Wellness Puppy Super 5 mix ha it is awesome i liked the fact that i could actually understand the ingredients :) and also no "fillers" |
Oh Also some food might seem expensive. but the bag of food will last you a very long time. especially when they are a puppy. their portions are just so small. |

I feel Life's Abundance. I have 4 dogs (3 Yorkie pups) and 1 BIG dog (106#). I feed all on Life's Abundance for about $.60/day. The food is great, it has never been recalled and it is all-natural/holistic with probiotics. If you want more information go to: Welcome to Trilogy If you would like some FREE samples - just PM me! No pressure - just an opportunity to try it free! Congrats on getting a new one. They will bring smiles to your face that you didn't think you had in you! |
try Innova. The smell to the puppies are very inviting! It is all natural and an A++ food! |
I feed Innova EVO but Innova is not ok for puppies. When they are over a year it is fine but not for growing puppies. All I can suggest is don't get the puppy specific food, get the adult kind. Puppies should not grow faster than they should (especially in large breeds). I have not researched puppy foods as I have never had a puppy. Vanessa |
I feed my 4 year old Yorkie Blue Buffalo and Solid Gold. I get the Blue Buffalo for small, picky dogs, and Prince loves it. (It seems to give him a lot of energy!!!) I have only seen Solid Gold with small kibbles. I only give him dry (kibbles) dog food. Prince's mom |

Thanks for the help!! Thanks for all your help everyone, I'm sure I will be in the pet stores a lot in the next month checking everything out! :) |
I feed Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish formula. I've been using it for probably 6 weeks and have been pleased so far. |
wellness I just started feeding my pup Wellness Super 5 Mix just these past few days and he seems to be taking to it well for the time being.. |
I feed the Blue Buffalo puppy food right now. It has no fillers or by products no corn/wheat. You can get it at petsmart , and it's not too expensive...They seem to really like the food BUT they don't like the little "lifesource bit" that are in the food . I'm not sure if it's the taste or texture ( they are very hard) that they don't like, but neither of my dogs will eat them and they leave them all over the floor  So I may try Wellness or Natural Balance next. It's a hard choice but it's good to do you research first. I was feeding bad food ( which at the time I thought was good food) to my dogs with no idea of how bad it was till I came here. Funny thing is we eat Organic and natural healthy foods...but I never looked at my dogs food labels  Now I know better. |

That's funny you say that because Turk use to not like the black bits either...he'd get one in his mouth and drop it, but then he'd eventually come back and eat it later. His bowl is usually empty now when I go to refill. Maybe they have to 'acquire' the dark pieces. lol |
Solid gold is good chester has been on it for awhile, I just swithced him to innova for a change. The solid gold puppy food is rated high. |
I don't have a puppy & didn't learn about godd nutrition for my boys until I found yorkietalk....anyway....WELCOME to YT!!!!! |
We started feeding my mom in laws yorkie natural choice for pupies(outmeal ad chicken) she loved it for a while but once she started giving her food of the table the puppy now refuses to eat any other kind of dry food. my advice do NOT feed your puppy any human food because once the puppy tries it they will never go back to dry food. |

Very good advice. You can train them to go back to dry kibble, but it is v e r y difficult. |

To those who don't feed people food at all because it makes them picky, that is very true, but on the other hand, dry food is way overprocessed and adding fresh food that is appropriate for them to their diet isn't a bad idea at all. |
I feed Snickers (6 months) Merrick's Puppy Plate and am currently switching him over to Merrick's Before Grain (Grainless) Chicken. (Both 5 star foods on dogfoodanalysis.com) Merrick can be given dry, or with some water which makes a great gravy. I love the company and the ingredients they put in. Good Luck and you will be a regular on this site for sure, it's crazy addicting and so jam packed full of essential things to know about your Yorkie. Smiles- Viv:animal-pa |

Thanks Vivian! My sister and I were just talking about Merrick's food tonight! Isn't that funny! |
Since I posted earlier in this thread, I have switched Missy to pre-made raw. We LOVE it! We are working our way up to feeding prey model  |
