science diet Any recommendations for some superior food? I would like to try something better than the science diet. Maybe the "raw diet". |
I don't feed raw but think it is a really good choice. If you deciode to feed kibble here is a great web site to look at different food. Dog Food Reviews - Main Index - Powered by ReviewPost I feed grain free. |
I don't feed raw either but many on here do- Premade is the way to go and if i were going to feed it i'd go with Nature's Variety. If you are looking for kibble- Natural Balance is a great food. I also like Orijen because it is grain free. Merricks has a new grain free food called Before Grain but I don't know a lot about it. |
I am a Prey Model raw feeder (whole meat parts) and am happy to answer any questions. I used to feed pre-made raw - I actually prefer the brand Primal to Nature's Variety...but pre-made is a great way to start! |

thank you for the suggestions and advice:) |
A raw diet is a great choice although I do not feed it to my pups. I use Orijen and the Halo dog treats and they have done great with this food so far. :p |

Chester has been on solid gold for awhile and has done well, he has a beautiful coat, he has itchies but it some thing other than food, he does well on it because it has 4 percent fiber and it helps with his anal gland issues he ocassionally gets. I have changed him over to innova small bites for a change but he seems to drink alot of water on it. |
I have feed my yorkies a lot of different food. I now am feeding them Natures Variety raw and Natural Balance. It has been working well for my yorkies. |
Shelby & Seymour are eating Blue Buffalo Small breed.... they are doing well on it. |
I hurd that blue buffalo is a great food. I just cant get it here where I live. Plus my Dexter has allergies to everything so I have so study everything before I can feed it to him. If I could get it here I would.:) |
I feed Scooter Wellness Adult Chicken. We are starting to switch to Wellness Small Bites (also chicken) because it is formulated for little dogs. Wellness has been a great food for Scooter. He has a better coat compared to previous foods. I add chicken and other people food in (always simple ingredients...nothing that would cause issues). I have always been curious about raw diets but I work full time and due to time contraints could never make it work. If you can make it work, more power to you. There is a lot of research online so just read up on everything and make an educated decision....thats how I came to choose Wellness. Good luck!! |
I use Orijen Adult Dry. A very superior dog food. Go to dogfoodanalysis.com They rate all the foods there. I believe Science Diet is rated very low. Orijen is grain free and high in protein. It contains fruits and herbs and probiotics. It is rated 6 stars ... the highest rating they give. When we adopted our baby he was 8 months and on Eukanuba (also a very low rated food). We put him on Wellness (rated 5 stars for dry formula) but his stools were very loose and frequent. Since putting him on Orijen he has done way better. He will not eat foods that contain grains again. Even his treats and absolutely no table scraps. Dogs do not have the enzyme amylase as we humans do that helps break down carbs, making grains very hard on their digestive system. Grains are said to cause alot of health problems in dogs. Good Luck! |

One of best foods Hi....I'm new to Yorkie Talk and it has helped me tremendously. Yes, I too had my puppy (5 mos) on Science Diet only to find out from the wonderful people who use Yorkie Talk that it's one of the Top 10 Worse Foods. They recommended Innova EVO...go on the internet and research it. It's all natural...no fillers. It's hard to find and you may have to order it from the internet, but I found a small family owned pet store 15 minutes from my house and I actually got 1-1/2 pounds more for the same cost ($14.99). My little Peanut loves it. So much that I have to feed her one kibble at a time or she gulps it down too quickly. You have to ween them onto the new stuff gradually 80/20 for 2 days, then increase 80/30, and so on. They require less and are full longer. I also found puppy can food on the internet by Innova. That's due to arrive on Monday. I can't wait. If you're going to spend top dollars on your family pet....you might as well make sure they are eating top food. Good luck...Sheryl, Bartlett, IL (mommie to PeanutAnn):) |

Sheryl..How old is your peanut?? Snickers is 6 months and is doing well on Merrick and I am really happy with it too, but he still has a few itches and I want him on the best. Is Peanut 5 months? Our vet said we can switch Snick to adult food now, so I was thinking Innova Evo Small bites. We tried Wellness Super5 but the bites are too big and Snick didn't like it at all. Wanted to know how old Peanut is b/c I am not sure if Snick is too young for grain free and high protein. Thanks:) -Viv:) |
I put my 10 month old on Orijen Dry for Adults. High protein, grain free. I had alot of questions so I contacted a lady named Diana 780-939-6888 at Champion Pet Foods. She emailed a bunch of info on high protein/grain free diet for dogs. She was very helpful. I put Odie on Adult because we bought him at 8 months. He was on Eukanuba and I switched to Wellness puppy ... he had alot of loose stools so I went to Adult Wellness and even more problems. Orijen makes a puppy formula, but I didn't want to do yet another switch after 2 months. Good Luck |
Snickers Peanut is 5 mos. Born 8-2. She is doing great since on Innova EVO Small Bites. All itching gone. She is more calmer at night and more loving. Not hungry all the time. Good luck |
A lot of vets reccomend Science Diet because of commissions and kick backs from the company. It is filled with by-products and fillers. Also I remember it having one of the three ingredients that many yorkies are sensitive to (corn, wheat or soy). I have people telling me how great they think their vets are but if I find out they reccomend Science Diet, I won't even look into it. A vet knows a lot more than you and I, so there is no reason that I can Science Diet is a mass produce low level brand of dog food and they can't. They may not think the ingredients can harm your dog but it's just not good enough in the long run. I have research to find Wellness & Solid Gold to be really good for both wet and dry foods. Pet Promise makes a great wet food as well but their dry food has corn meal. No good! |
I heard Wellness Core is very good.. I have tried Orijen and Solid Gold, both are also good but mine is a picky eater. I am currently giving her Merrick Granny's potpie. She loves it, but I want to try Wellness core Ocean see how that turns out |
I have sold dog food in my grooming salon for the past 4 years. And Wellness and Solid Gold are both really a good food. But if you are looking for a food to feed feed more then 1 dog then I recommend Natural Balance. It is a good food and it comes in a bigger bag then 4 lbs. There are no fillers or by-products. My yorkies have done well on it for a long time:p:p:p |
