need to switch foods again?? I need some advice on what brand to feed my 5 month old yorkie, she is currently eating a tablespoon of ukaneba lamb and rice with a little of hills science diet in the morning and just the science diet in the evening, i have been reading a lot of thread about natural balance and wanted to know if that was better, sometime it seems like her stools are very soft. I also notice her knawing at her paws and she has been treated for fleas. thanks. Gracie:aimeeyork |
oh poor thing. It is the food that is causing her loose poop and her itching. All of those food are sadly bad quality but sold everywhere. Natural Balance is a WONDERFUL food- but you need to change over slowly- her body has to rid itself of the old food- take about a week to change over- slowly adding more and more new food. Her poop might get even softer but it is just her body adjusting to the new food- that shouldn't last longer than 2-3 days. |
should i slowly get her off wet food and just keep giving her hard food instead??? |

I switched the boys to NB venison & sweet potato. Clarence rarely pees inside anymore (he's 12 & taking a diuretic) & Keegan does NOT chew on his paws anymore. This chang has been great for us. |

Really! The vet couldn't give us an answer but YT sure did! THANKS YT! I'd love to go prey model but I don't think I have the "fill in excuse" for it right now. Keegan would be perfect for it...Clarence is like an old "Queen", he'd look at it like...well, lady...what the hell do you expect me to do with THIS mess???? He is 7# of pure funny (reference avatar). |
Yes, purina is supposedly a bad food, but, not all purina foods are bad. For one thing, the food we had to have our golden retriever on, was made by purina, it was only sold through the vets, and the pro plan is also one of their better ones. When our chihuahua was growing up over 40 years ago, purina was one of the only foods out there on the market, he was on purina dog food all his life, and lived to be 19, never had any health problems. As I've said before, no matter what kind of food anyone feeds, as long as the dog does well with it, no allergies, etc then keep them on it..I truely believe in this, I have seen many dogs sicker on supposed "good food", than some of the "bad food".. |
did anyone ever hear of the food called promise, i recieved coupons in the mail for their food, it says they sell it at pet smart. :aimeeyork Gracie |

The breeder had her on pro plan, if she didn't feel it was a good food, she wouldn't have been feeding it. I know our golden retriever lived to be 17 or 18 being on kibbles and chunk all her life(she died of cancer, never ever paid a vet bill for her, except the yearly rabi shots..), the same with our 19 year old chihuahua..Now, I've had mine on good food and have had plenty of vet bills. Now, they're all on eukanuba naturally wild, they all do well on it, their poop is more solid than it was on other "good" foods, and YES, I do feel good feeding it to them. |

Please keep in mind that MANY MANY vet offices are subsidized by Hill's and Iams-which means they get MONEY to promote and sell their products. And, they get lots of free literature to read themselves and hand out, and a lot of times they don't even realize what they're doing. I asked one of our vets about homecooking, and she didn't have the SLIGHTEST clue about dog nutrition-she just said she wasn't familiar with it, and just used Hill's and Iams, but to persue my own research. And then we switched vets! ;) |

My dogs were doing good with Royal Canin (?) or so I thought. After reading many threads here at YT and becoming informed I swithched all of mine to Orijen (made in the USA) and Halo treats. After a couple of months I noticed a difference in their hair and almost immediately in their poop not to mention that the scratching/itching stopped. It is a little more expensive but it is worth my babies health. Once again thank you YT. :D |

I agree with the other yt both of those food are by products and filler. |
oh believe me, I've never asked any of my vets for food advice. I have had dogs all my life and feed them what works best for them. As I've said, all of mine are on eukanuba naturally wild, and are doing great on it, so that's what they will continue to get. There is no corn or fillers in it. As I've said, everyone should do whatever they feel is best for their dogs. |
Breeders often belong to a Breeders Programs that provides sample packages for puppy packages. Doesn't mean that the foods they recommend are the healthiest or the safest. I recently discussed on my blog and on my website, the Pet Food scare as well as provided the list of the healthiest dog foods available and who the manufacturers are. I feed my dogs, Biewers included, California Natural Lamb and Rice. As puppies they get the puppy formula. The adults get the Reduced Fat variety. When the puppies are weaning from mom, they eat the softened kibble. There is no breeders program for the California Natural dog's food. And this brand wasn't on the recall lists. |
