annual vaccines :animal37 Harley is now 15 months and my vet is wanting to give him his annual vaccines,after reading that they are not always necessary every year,i am wondering what kind of schedule i should follow.:confused: |
Hey Brantford!! that's close! You need to tell your vet that your dog will only be getting his rabies vaccine AND you should find a vet who gives it every 3 years. Layla will no longer be getting ANY vaccines except rabies. If he insists on giving SOME - make sure it is NOT Lepto or Corona... i also don't get bordetella. Tell your vet you want a titer test done to see if your dog still has the antibodies for the vaccines he wants to give. |
I would definately get parvo, distemper, hepatitis and rabies as one year boosters. Then there are different protocols to choose from. At least one of each core vaccine needs to be given after the immune system is fully mature (after 6 months or so). Then after that there is a lot that goes into deciding how often to give them. We don't do non-core vaccines here. I wouldn't give them unless there were a very good reason to in my particular situation. |

so do the annual boosters come in a combo because i know thats not good so do you ask for seperate shots? and how far apart to spread them? |

You can do them separately if you want. I'd space them a week or two apart. If I had a healthy dog, I'd probably let the vet give distemper, parvo, hepatitis and possibly parainfluenza in a combo but some people would prefer to do them separately. The AAHA has said that giving too many at once could possibly cause negation of immunity and that is a lot for their bodies to handle but I'm thinking this is still being researched. I really wouldn't want to give more than DHPP in one day and now with Ellie and her reaction issues, I think they will all be given separately... |

The one and three year vaccines are the same for at least one company just labeled differently to satify different state requirements but the vet does need the one labeled three years :rolleyes: (I think) to be able to say it will last that long. That is my understanding on it so far. It could be that some vets use the one labeled one year and write that they used the three year....I don't know. thats pretty crazy to me. My reg vet said they also do titers for mostly for people going overseas and military that some overseas require it. but i could probably do it if i requested it. but i dont need to worry about that till next yr right? since this is her first annual(not first shots) |
