annual vaccines :animal37 Harley is now 15 months and my vet is wanting to give him his annual vaccines, after reading that they are not always necessary every year,i am wondering what kind of schedule i should follow. |
Hey Brantford!! that's close! You need to tell your vet that your dog will only be getting his rabies vaccine AND you should find a vet who gives it every 3 years. Layla will no longer be getting ANY vaccines except rabies. If he insists on giving SOME - make sure it is NOT Lepto or Corona... i also don't get bordetella. Tell your vet you want a titer test done to see if your dog still has the antibodies for the vaccines he wants to give. |
I would definately get parvo, distemper, hepatitis and rabies as one year boosters. Then there are different protocols to choose from. At least one of each core vaccine needs to be given after the immune system is fully mature (after 6 months or so). Then after that there is a lot that goes into deciding how often to give them. We don't do non-core vaccines here. I wouldn't give them unless there were a very good reason to in my particular situation. |

I think it would've been pup shots and if those ended at 16 weeks, one year later would be 16 months... I think he is do for one year boosters. |

just wanted to verify Harley is due for his one year boosters...thanks so much for the advice,i will have these boosters done and then decide how often to vaccinate :) |
Mine get their boosters every year, including, the lyme, and now every 3years the rabies vac:animal-pa |
so do the annual boosters come in a combo because i know thats not good so do you ask for seperate shots? and how far apart to spread them? |

You can do them separately if you want. I'd space them a week or two apart. If I had a healthy dog, I'd probably let the vet give distemper, parvo, hepatitis and possibly parainfluenza in a combo but some people would prefer to do them separately. The AAHA has said that giving too many at once could possibly cause negation of immunity and that is a lot for their bodies to handle but I'm thinking this is still being researched. I really wouldn't want to give more than DHPP in one day and now with Ellie and her reaction issues, I think they will all be given separately... |

i just actually called around asking vets if they do the 3yr rabies one lady told me yes that its the same shot its only difference is if the vet write on the ceritficate 3 yrs or 1 yr |

The one and three year vaccines are the same for at least one company just labeled differently to satify different state requirements but the vet does need the one labeled three years  (I think) to be able to say it will last that long. That is my understanding on it so far. It could be that some vets use the one labeled one year and write that they used the three year....I don't know. I don't do much PMing but you can always send me a profile message. :) |

thats pretty crazy to me. My reg vet said they also do titers for mostly for people going overseas and military that some overseas require it. but i could probably do it if i requested it. but i dont need to worry about that till next yr right? since this is her first annual(not first shots) |

Ellie May: I know that the Corona vaccine is about useless on dogs past puppyhood, that healthy dogs over (what is it? 16 weeks?) don't need the shots, especially if they had then when they were younger. And I *think* I know that Yorkies shouldn't be given leptospirosis ... but I'm not sure why. What about Bordetella? My pups only go to the groomers, and I know they didn't want them to come until they'd had the Bordetella. I guess I'm asking (because they will need boosters soon) is: What shots DO they need? What shots are OK, but unnecessary? What shots should be avoided? Rabies is a bugaboo around here: it has a high incidence, so annual shots are required by law, titers or no. And the 3 year has not been approved. Now, flea and heartworm: I've been using Comfortis for fleas, which is drop-dead fantastic! But they should have heartworm. My thing is, I want something that's dosed for < 10 lb. dogs, not something that's dosed for < 20 lb. dogs. That's too much. You seem to know quite a bit about it all, and are trusted :). What are your recommendations? |
After their first initial shots, my Vet. only gives the boostes every three years. Annual shots are not necessary and can lead to cancers and other major health problems. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/front/1377004 Holistic Animal Medicines :: Natural animal health products supplier |
