Rimadyl, is it safe? Abby's being spayed tomorrow and I called to see what kind of pain medication they would be giving her...they said Rimadyl. Anyone else ever have their baby on this? Is it safe? Thanks in advance. |
Jamie had Rimadyl after his neuter and did fine with it. |
Thats the same pain meds mine got also. I didnt research it to see how safe it was because I ended up not giving mine any of it. It was good to have just in case though. They also give it for dogs with arthritis |
Has Abby been bile acids tested? I would use it short-term after an invasive procedure as long as the liver and kidneys are okay. My opinion is that it is not a good idea to use NSAIDs or certain kinds of anesthesia before bile acids testing... |
My vet has prescribed Metacam following surgery on one of my girls but it, along with Rimadyl and Deramaxx, are NSAIDs. The recent threads regarding these drugs are very scary regarding the potential side effects. I think that, after reading these stories, I would be more comfortable using a narcotic for pain management. |
Abby has not been bile acid tested. Oh geez... Maybe we'll be lucky and she won't have to have any. She is getting a shot for pain relief before we leave. Should I ask for something different? |

Whatever pain meds your vet prescribes, make sure you read the inserts and look it up on line any potential side effects. That way, if you give it to her and notice any affects, you can stop it right away and not have any problems. There are some uncommon side effects on some pain meds that can happen, just be pre-armed with the knowledge and it should be ok. I'm assuming she's had or will have the pre-op blood screening? I forgot to add, that just like people, meds can affect furbabies different ways. What works on one may not on another |

Ellie had metacam before being bile acids tested and everything was okay. I would give pain meds for 2-3 days post surgery even if she doesn't act like she is in pain because she may be hiding it. There are other pain meds that you can use but they may not work as well as NSAIDs. I was not happy post spay with Ellie's pain level but our hands were tied because she can't have NSAIDs... She had to have something that is second best. I don't like Rimadyl at all because of all of the side effects but it does have its place. The vet may be giving it as an injection also. If you are very concerned, ask for something else. |
I agree 100% with Crystal. This is FAMILY we are talking about. Get the pre-op blood work. Do not take any chances with NSAIDs. Below is a list of side effects. Side Effects of Rimadyl | The Dog Arthritis Resource My boy was not so lucky with Rimadyl. Geng |
Pre-op bloodwork is always a good idea because it can reveal warning signs if your dog cannot handle anesthesia. I would ask them to do it before the surgery! |
I agree with everyone who said that pre-op bloodwork is really important... My yorkie was given Rimadyl once after a surgery (he was around 1 yr old), and he had a horrible reaction to it..We thought we were losing him, and he only got a couple of doses. He was extremely lethargic, vomiting profusely, etc... |
