Just want whats best Hi! I don't mean to ambush everyone with a thousand questions but I was wondering what brand of food everyone likes to feed their dogs. Right now I am using Purina one small breed. My yorkie has a new founf love for my other dogs food, but the other dog is a lab, and she just gets sams club brand. My other question is that Thor seems to be really itchy (not from flea's becuase I use frontline) and I don't want to pump him full of medicines, but I hate it for him that he is so itchy. Does anyone have any remedies for ichy skin in doggies? Thanks! Hannah aka Thors Momma |
switch foods! Purina has a lot of corn, this makes dogs itch a lot! Check the ingredients of the food before you purchase it to make sure there is not corn in it...I feed Innova, no corn and no itchies! |
I use Biljac. Swear by it for all breeds. |
Hi! Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I use Natural Balance Ultra Puppy Food. Chloe loves it and her coat is beautiful. This food has fish oil in it thats really good for the skin. You could give it a try. Also, what shampoo do you use? A oatmeal shampoo will really help her skin!! Make sure you rinse her well. Joy, Nikki and Chloe Rose "rose" :wavey: :yorkietal :wavey: |
We usually feed Teddy Royal Canin 33 |
Yoda loves his Royal Canin puppy 33 |

Gracie started on Science Diet which she would NOT hardly eat, then I tried Bil-Jac and she loved it for about a week then I had trouble with that...then she started eating my moms dogs food Science Diet large breed...which she loved and the vet said was okay :) but then she became bored with that so then I tried Pro Plan and she loves it!!! She eats so well now I don't have to worry about her eating...and she has had this for a little over a month and she normally gets bored after about a week!! |
Wow! Thanks to everyone with awesome comments and great ideas. It means a lot to me that people here at YT are so caring and willing to offer their opinions! Thanks again! Hannah and Thor  |

Joy 1, I used to use an oatmeal shampoo that was also tearless, but when I talked to my vet about Thor's ichiness she told to that the ph balance was off in the tearless shampoo's and I should only use that on his head. So now I use my regular paul mitchell, or dove (i switch around) shampoo and conditioner with a tea tree oil leave in conditioner spray. Thanks again for the great advise! Hannah |
Reguardless of breed, the dogs should be on good food. Sams club food isn't good. Especially for a large breed dog. It will have a long term affect on the dog. I have Recon who is a lab/springer mix and he is on large breed food because it has the vitamina and stuff that he will need throughout his lifespan. Feeding good food to large dogs helps to prevent them from having hip problems and joint problems when they get older. The cheaper brands of foods also have ALOT of corn in them. As for the tearless shampoo. Your vet needs to take a course in grooming. Not trying to sound rude. I am a lisenced groomer. Tearless is fine to use all over the body. BUT, I usually use it just on thier heads. However, using human shampoo all the time isn't good for them and can cause skin issues. With human shampoo the Ph is different than dog shampoo. Human shampoo is OK to use occasionally but not as a regular shampoo. :) :) |
Welcome to YT and all of your questions are welcome! Stay away from foods with corn or any kind of "by-product" in them and you should be fine. I feed Natural Balance, but I know some here choose Innova or Canidae. I have also been hearing about Chicken for the dog lovers soul a lot but am not familiar with their ingredient list. Good luck. |
Hi Thorsmomma!! I also have a lab and yorkie...i feed them canidae since it is balanced for all breeds, size and life stages, it is just easier than having to separate the food. Another thing is the quality of the food, like was mentioned before purina one is not the best food out there...and your lab also deserves better food. You will see notice that the best foods are more expensive than the ones sold in grocery stores but the feeding servings are smaller so it will probably not make too much difference at the end. As per your "itchy" dog, hehehe, it can be many things, some dogs have this reaction to grains, normally corn, but some dogs also have to the meat source, the best one to use in this cases is lamb with is very unlikely to get an allergic reaction. Just another thing, i have been reading good things from lab owners about costco's own brand of dog food (i cannot remember right now) for the price range, the lamb and rice is suposed to be the best choice out there. |
I had two Golden Retrievers and the breeders swear by Costcos lamb and rice! My yorkie breeders says that she has often crushed it and given it to picky eating yorkies! |

I would say trry a different food. My dogs eat Royal Canin min bites. An oatmeal shampoo would be good for the itching. |
Costso's dog food I am glad to hear the positive things about Costco's dog food. My lad is on the lamb and rice formula and she loves it and so does my yorkie Thor. Since Thor is six months old now, my vet said I could switch him from puppy food to adult food, and I am still searching for the right food. I want it to be healthy, yummy, and help with his itching. I have had some great suggestions so far about good kinds of food. Their are some reall strong oppions on the Costco's dog food, reanging from really bad, to great, and in my personal experience it is great! |
Here's one of those previous threads someone mentioned. There may be a better one. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14479 |

their main plant is in a suburb of Cleveland (Medina) D ogs love it and it puts on weight if you ever need that. That I don't need in my 11 yr. old Yorkie! |
Just switched to Royal Canin and since I know that tends to put on the lbs. I am just feeding her less and she looks forward to it and seems to satisfy her longer. |
P. S. My vet thinks Bil Jac Frozen is like cocaine for dogs (they love it so much) and mine does and that's why I'm with Royal Canin. Although it does seem to put on weight it's nothing like Bil Jac. The Univ. of Pa. used to call us all the time to feed very ill dogs. They needed something to get them to eat that would be good for them. My previous two posts seem to contradict one a another. Just wanted to explain. |
bil jac Do you know if bil jac if full of preservitives and artifical flavors? I want something that is very natural and not pumped up with a ton of preservitives, etc. I know I'm picky, I just want my little man to be healthy. |

Lucy has Bakers Complete puppy/junior plus the adult meaty chunks. I have been told that it is not great for her, but it is that or nothing. We have tried all the vet recommended stuff and she refuses to eat anything else. With the itchyness, we were recommended to bath Lucy in a mild salt solution and it worked wonders, since we started doing it she has hardly scratched at all |
I use Innova Puppy for Cooper and Carter. My daughter lives in North Carolina and they don't even have PetSmart or Petco here. I went with her today to purchase dog food for Sebastian at a small local petshop and they have Chicken Soup! That is another food that is on Whole Dog Journal's top list. The price was good too -- $6.89 for 6#. Lisa |
could you help Quote:
have changed it some. Most of the dry foods have preservatives but some are better than others. I will not let my dog eat a food with by products and I won't even go into what that could intail. Since she is in Nevada I'm pretty sure she can't get the frozen (checked on that for someone else not too long ago )and I should not have brought it up except on an Ohio site. Oh well you mentioned Bil Jac and I have felt great about it but since the time I worked for them, I have found other good foods also. Solid Gold Is another I don't think we mentioned. www.jbpet.com has a good variety of top notch foods and most you can buy in the better pet stores. Could I ask you to quote this since she may want to look into others. Also I do feel you are what you eat (both human and animal) and since these dogs eat so little, it's not a hardship to feed the best. Like bleaming I feel Bil Jac is one of the best. |

for a long time after Bil Jac to get her weight down. Now I hope this Royal Canin(lite) doesn't have her back to being a little "tub" again. She still could lose more weight but she didn't like the Nutro this past month for some reason. |
Thor is a great name! All you need to do is look at the list of ingredients and you can determine which are the best foods. If it doesn't sound like something you would eat then it's not good! There is a list out there that is created by the Whole Dog Journal every year. They don't take advertising and they list the best foods for the year. You might be able to find this list if you search google, but it's not listed on their website because you have to subscribe - since they take no paid advertisements that is the only way to make money. The problem is that Petsmart, Petco, and the grocery store don't sell the best foods. My 9 month old Loki had problems with diarrhea on Royal Canin. Now he is on Natural Balance Ultra Premium (only the "Ultra Premium" is on the list). I can get it at PetCo for about $8 for 2 months worth of food. I'm happy with it and it is a good quality food. Canidae and Innova are two of the best out there though. We will likely switch to one of those soon! Oh, and I have a nosey neighbor who is always trying to sell me BilJac. I just politely tell him that BilJac is NOT on the list :-) |

to sell anyone Bil Jac because since I was with them years ago; I know there is better. but when someone is happy with their food like our one member on the tread is and the dog is doing well, why discourage her. It's certainly better than buying something at a grocery store. I haven't worked for them in 20 yrs. so I wouldn't want to go out on a limb either way until I checked more but the frozen is an excellent food. They used to ship to breeders but are now keeping it local. I'm glad you were polite to your nosey neighbor!! |
Thanks Erin! It's a big name for a little guy with a huge attitude! I'm not trying to be thick here, but is "frozen" a brand of food or is it a sub-brand of Bil Jac? Thanks to everyone's helpful hints... |
