I'm about to give up.... so....i gave Fiona a capstar yesterday, and she STILL has fleas on her..... I just got some spray from a friend---i sprayed some on fiona....and when i got home, i went around the whole outside of the house spraying it, and by the neighbors fence...and then sprayed part of the basement..... i really dont know what else to do!?:( She got Frontline plus a week ago today...any other suggestions!? I'm so upset and annoyed right now....:mad: |
I know some people dont go for this, but bath her in Dawn, the plain blue kind.... that will kill any fleas on her and as long as you have treated all other areas it should help. I heard today that flea treatments are flying off the shelves because so many people are fighting them this year... good luck! d |
Flea's are bad this year. I've had my share of the problem too. When I was fighting to get control of the problem and get them gone here's what I did. I bathed my 3 in the original dawn dish detergent. I used Capstar, and frontline plus. We spray our yard with Permectrin II (I got that at our local Farmers Co-Op, its concentrated so you have to dilute it) and we sprayed every 2 weeks now hubby is cutting back to once a month. I may have been wrong to do this, but I didn't let my 3 go outside for a month until I knew the spray had time to start working. I cleaned up poop and pee everyday (2 of mine were pee pad trained so that helped on the clean up some what.) We also had our house and furniture sprayed. I washed all bedding(ours and theirs) in hot water and dried the bedding on the hottest heat. Vacuumed all mattresses. I pretty much gave my house an overall spring cleaning. I wish you good luck on getting your flea problem gone soon. |
Don't give up! Have you powdered your carpet or anything? Washed all the bedding and stuff like that? We just had them a few weeks ago, I gave her a bath in Dawn then got a Comfortis pill from the vet. I also used a flea powder for carpets, let it sit for 1 hour then vacuumed and have vacuumed pretty much daily since then. I made sure I washed her toys, my bedding, her bedding, her blankets, our blankets in hot water and then dried them on the hottest setting. |
i SWEAR BY FRONTLINE PLUS. gOODLUCK! |
Thank you all for your help! I have done EVERYTHING that you all did. Last thursday I applied the frontline plus..... Friday- Came home, Put carpet cleaner down, vaccummed, washed all our bedding, her bedding, and didnt see any on her Sunday- gave her a bath in the plain blue dawn- let it sit, rinsed, used some puppy shampoo/conditioner, thought all was good This Tuesday, I'm sitting there playing with her and 2 fleas were on her head.... Went and picked up a capstar on Wednesday.......gave her a bath again, and thought we were good. Well, went to a friends last night, and saw one on her head again, and her neck! friend gave me the spray- and so far this morning, i dont see any on her!? Im so frustrated because I live in the basement of a friends house- its all finished down here, real nice- well the neighbors have a pit/beagle mix that is strictly outside dog- and they dont take care of her, plus they have 2 cats, well Jay (home owner) called my boyfriend yesterday saying that the little girl next door ( jay's gfriend watches their kids all week) had a flea on her- so they are assuming Fiona is brining them in, but in my case, im thinking that its their house with the fleas and bringing them here? its just frustrating cuz i dont want them to kick us out because of this... |
We had a big flea problem too and since Maggie is allergic to flea bites she suffered from a bad dermatitis. Our Vet recommended Comfortis, a pill, and ever since we had no fleas at all and Maggie's skin is healed up. Even though there might be some side effects like vomitting and diarrhea none of my four had any problems. I like to mention that Maggie also has a very sensitive stomach and gets diarrehea and vomitting from nothing more than one piece of people food or even fireworks or sirens... |
so, do you think im doing anything wrong!? I just dont know what else to do? I guess when i get her spayed at the end of the month i can try revolution for her!? this is sooooo frustrating! |
I would be VERY careful on putting any more poison in your yorkie.....these things are pesticides and they do have risks, they are hard on the livers for one thing........ The way it was explained to me is that products like Frontline do NOT repel fleas, the fleas will still jump on a pet. It works when the flea bites the pet and it is then exposed to the poison and then they die...... There are spray products at health food stores that will keep the flea from jumping and they are safer...... |

oh trust me...i hardly take medicine myself let alone do things like that for Fiona. The frontline was applied a week ago and the vet told me it was ok that i gave her the capstar. Im not putting anything else on her. the spray is petcor, and so far nothing this am..... |
What kind of stuff did you use on the carpet? I used this powder from Wal-mart that was like $10, it's safe to use around dogs but I still put Lilly up, I made sure I let it sit for at least an hour and I took a broom and kind of dusted it into the carpet... the smell is strong and kind of icky but it's better than having fleas. |

Oh and keep vacuuming so you get any eggs up and out of the carpet. |

Thank you! its just more stressing me cuz its not my house, and i think the home owners gfriend thinks im causing this issue...when in fact i think its the neigbors...so i dunno..at least im attmepting to take care of things, ya know!? yes, i have been vaccumming and everything- i dont want to over do it, but i want to be in control here! |
Have you thought of useing flea bombs in the house. You will have to be out for a couple hours but if you use the kind with growth inhibitors they work great and are better then putting more poisons on your dog |
I don't really like flea bombs but to each their own. Can you say something to the neighbors politely? Or at least just make sure your yard is sprayed so hopefully they don't have as good of a chance getting over to your area. I'll be glad when we get a good first freeze so it'll take care of a lot of these fleas. Ugh! |

We are now giving Tatum and Stormie (our Aust. Shep.) a Comfortis pill at the beginning of the month and then their Sentinel (flea + heartworm) pill in the middle of the month. Fleas are really bad in our area. Tatum is apparently allergic to fleabites, as we found out about 6 months ago, and ever since the Comfortis combined with the Sentinel, they have had no flea problems. If Tatum were getting bitten, we would know about it because of the rash she would get. I've heard nothing but good things about Comfortis! |
well apparently my roomies went next door and flea combed kyra and they found NOTHING- so they are pretty much accusing me of doing this...I AM SO MAD, cuz i take care of all my animals, for christ sakes i was a VET TECH! |

AMEN SISTER!!!!! :D:D:D (its good to know people are with me and not against me! even my own mom just told me that) |
Marci's right.. You didn't make your dogs get fleas.. Your roomies should mind their own business. Same here.. I can't stand most people too. |
I have Sentinel For Suzi, but, She has had no problems with fleas yet, at all. it is expensive at the vet office, but it is god stuff. I can see why the frustration of getting rid of them altogether when their inside the carpets and everywhere else. That is when it is such a pain. I had cats befor and remeber the how stressful it was ! |
Support is great!!!!! thank you all for agreeing with me...the weird thing is, i dont think they are in my house, i really think they are from outside, now, if they were all over the house, and everything and i wasnt doing anything to fix this, then my roomies could get all up in my business...ya know!? so whatever...i just brushed over Fiona again, and i see nothing...so hopefully im getting this back into control!!!! thanks everyone!!!! |
I would flea bomb the basement where you live and treat the yard. And if you have to, get some Frontline for the outside dog. |
Again, same here. I think my dogs pick up the fleas from our walks. We have a few strays.. Or what I THINK are strays.. they look kinda healthy as if they get meals enough, but not too clean  Also I just moved into this house 3 months ago.. so everything is still very new and shiny and clean. So I don't think the fleas comes from anywhere in my house. We have stray cats too, always comes into our yard to poop. I think it's because we have lotus plants, and there's clean water in the pot. I have no heart to shoo most if I see any. One was pregnant :( I do know the neighbor's dogs opposite across the street has fleas :mad: 2 golden retrievers, 1 german shep, and 1 black lab. I see the dog's caretaker picking fleas from their bodies all the time. Yes I snoop from the balcony to look at them in their front yard. No I don't feel guilty  it's for the good of my dogs too. Sigh... I don't know what to do if my dogs cannot take walks.. They have begun to love it. But i live in a tropical 3rd world country :( |
I use a flea comb on chester several times a day, put a little petroleum jelly on the comb and then they cant jump off, their was some stuff I seen online called cedarcide or something that was natural that I was thinking about. They can jump out of your vacum cleaner bag so take if out seal it up and throw it away. I vacum up the borax mule team stuff in my vacum cleaner, that will kill them also, good luck. |
I hate to tell you this, but it can take months to take care of the fleas. From what I understand flea eggs are not affected by sprays, powders, and bombs. The eggs can also lay dormat for months untill the right conditions before hatching. So, it is possible that you will continue to see fleas for a while. Frontline is prob. the best product out there, but it is not a flea repellant. You will still see fleas but they will die after eating from you pup. I think that as long as you vacuum daily, wash bedding every 2 days, and use a good powder on the carpet you should be alright. It will just take some time. I use frontline on my 2 dogs and cat (the cat is outdoors 80% of the time), and also spray them with lavender and tea tree oil diluted in water. We don't have any problems with fleas or ticks and we back up to a large dairy farm and have all kinds of wild life around us. Also, I use Borax laundry powder on my carpet and then take a broom and rub it in every couple of months, it is supposed to be good to dehydrate the fleas in the carpet. Good luck and be patient. |

This is true BUT I wouldn't discourage her! She's on the right path and doing the right things. If you vacuum everyday and empty the canister or take the bag straight to the outside trash then you're most likely getting rid of all the eggs. I have read that the vibrations from walking on the floor and running the vacuum causes the eggs to hatch that's why you need to vacuum pretty much every day. We had a flea scare weeks ago... I only saw 1 flea but up 'til today, I have pretty much vacuumed every other day and will probably continue to do so. :D Keep up the good work (spraying outside and cleaning inside) and you'll hopefully be flea free in no time, I have faith! |
queen of impatient! Thank you all! I know that it does take some time to get rid of them! I am making progress I think! I had to shave out some of Fiona's matts today, and there were a bunch of fleas hiding out in the matts, so I think we should be good. Im getting new vaccumm bags tomorrow so i can just throw them out, and not worry about stupid roomies! :aimeeyork |
