Is baby shampoo ok for yorkies??? Hi, we have a young male yorkie we have recently adopted and are wondering if baby shampoo would be ok. If not, any recommendations? thanks so much:) |
Baby shampoo is generally pretty gentle, so it should be fine. I use a Johnson & Johnson's tearless baby shampoo (I think it may be frangrance free, too?) on Mocha's face and then Minksheen for his body and everywhere else. |
Same here. I only use the baby shampoo on their faces although I read somewhere that we shouldn't use it on dogs. I don't know. |
I was told that any human shampoo is not good for a dogs skin and hair. Shampoos made for dogs are made for their skin and hair specifically. I wouls never use human hair products on my fur babies. |

Yes, I agree with this, baby shampoo is gentle on human hair and skin, but dog's hair and skin is more alkaline, and human products are more acidic. Over time the result will be very drying to their hair, and skin. You probably won't notice it if you keep it in a short puppy cut, but if you were to grow the hair out, it would look fried over time. Here's a link that explains the difference in Ph between humans and dogs. Jon-An's Yorkshire Terrier (Shampoo and Conditioner). One thing, you should always use a conditioner, and I've been told that human hair conditioners can be used on dogs because the Ph isn't that different with conditioners. The grooming forum has lots of great recommendations on shampoos, I've been very happy with the products made by Biogroom. |
they sell a tearless dog shampoo on Pet Supplies, Dog Supplies, Cat Supplies, Pet Meds & Pet Products website if you would like to look at it. it seems very gentle. I buy the Itch Stop shampoo & conditioner on this site. |
I just wanted to say WELCOME TO YT :D |
I always use my redken shampoo on Brady because I had heard their hair is like human hair. Should I not use that? |

I wouldn't use human's shampoo. My mom used baby shampoo on Lulu my shihtzu and it was horrible! She has terrible mats. Now we use dog's shampoo (from 8 in 1), very generic shampoo and her mats are much improved. She still gets them, shihtzu's coat being how it is, but now we can brush it off instead of cutting the mats. Wonder how it will improve if I buy the more expensive ones.. Quote:

I would not recommend using any human shampoo on dogs because of the different ph. I have used baby shampoo on Ellie and am using my shampoo on her now and it is fine. One kind of shampoo made her flake though. So no I wouldn't recommend it but yes I do it. |

Ace hardware, that's funny, you never know what they will carry. I use to have to order it online, but the local Petsmart started carrying it, it's what Joey's breeder recommended, and she's a show breeder, so I imagine she knows a little in this area. I use "Protein Lanolin Tearless Shampoo", and Silk Conditioning Creme Rinse Concentrate. I also us a texturizer made by them called Spray Set, that I spray on his topknot to give it a little more body. Remember, the products are very concentrated and you have to mix them 1 part to 4 parts water, area. |

Thank you Miss Nancy :D I almost threw the creme rinse concentrate the other day, but I thought I would look for "better" brands or something.. but now I'm totally getting it. I love ACE hardware! :D They were the only one who was selling KONGs, and I got harnesses there too! I got my wee wee pads, the frame for it.. loads actually. One time they were selling this bed, very very nice, but I didn't get it... Now it's sold out and I regret it to this minute.. I have learned my lesson. And they sell things cheap too! |

I know, I wish I had one closer to me, that not as popular in AZ, but their prices are great. I needed a flooring product that only a few floor places sold, for $30.00 a quart, Ace had it for $17.00, quite a savings. By the way, I love the way the creme rinse concentrate smells, and if you want extra conditioning just leave on a few minutes before rinsing. I warm a towel in the microwave, and wrap Joey in this, and he gets a warm conditioning treatment. |
my vet recommended baby shampoo for marbellah at least until i'm able to take her to a groomer |
