My little guy has a skin problem, and i'm not sure how to help him.

He is bitting the fur off his back legs and backside, and has dry flaky skin. My vet suggested it may be his diet, I feed him Purina One dry food, but i'm not entirely sure or comfortable on what to change his diet to. Do I just try different foods until he stops pulling his hair out?

Anyone have a similar problem, and might suggest a different diet?

Do you think I should purchase a certain shampoo and wash his coat more often?

join allerdog@yahoo.com it is allergies -- I have an allergy yorkie too. how old is yours? I recommend switching asap to natural balance fish and sweet potato. If chewing backside it can be flea allergy- have you seen fleas on him? The allergies can be food, environmental or flea or combo of all - in most cases it is environmental. Use a hypoallergenic shampoo like earthbath hypoallergenic or dr. bronners unscented mild baby shampoo as many can be allergic to oatmeal shampoos

I have an allergic one too and feed California Natural which did not stop the itching. Cali is on atopica medicine to stop the scratching. I hope you can find out what is causing it.

When you say environmental, what do you mean? What changes can I make to his environment that would help?

I'm open to all suggestions, I hate seeing him scratch. . . . .

I have my dogs on california natural or wellness. These foods dont have any artificial fillers such as corn which most dogs are allergic to which makes there skin sensitive. I find it works well with my babies. I hope this helps and good luck!

Environmental is pollens and that is the hardest to deal with

atopica or hyposensitization shots can help along with omega 3 and antihistamines as the first shot. First you need to rule out food allergy and best and easiest way other than homecooking is natural balance fish and sweet potato for 12 weeks with no treats or other food period and then see if itching gets better if no fleas then most likely environmental. while california natural is a good food it has too many ingredients for an allergy dog so you need to stay with on protein and one carb --- allergies are very frustrating -- Also dogs should have a full 6 panel thyroid panel done to rule out hypothyroid which can affect skin condition. My dd is hypothyroid and severe allergies and hypothyroidism is common in yorkie breed along with allergies
