eating poo i hope i'm doing this correctly, max is 7 months old, from the U.K. a real "top dog", does all of his buisiness at the right place, but will remove his poo (when i'm not looking) and bring it back to the living room, place it on his Lounging pillow, and have the horrible dessert !!! can anyone help?? |
OMG too funny. Someone just posted about this earlier. Someone said try feeding him pineapples? My 2 have never done this but if you look through the posts I'm sure you find some help. Welcome to YT! |
Yeah, supposedly the pineapple will digest a certain way and taste awful on its way out....i think....but anyway....isn't poop eating because of a nutrient deficiency? If you're feeding a food that has more fillers than protein as the main ingredients, this is more apt to happen. That's just what I was told. |
LOL.. I am laughing b/c KiKi did the same thing...for a while...it's like they have the best piece of steak life can offer when they are munching on their poop!! Thankfully she grew out of it!! I was just very consistant on picking it up right away and flushing it....at first she would look at me with a look that said what are you doing with my precious snack!!! LOL..Good luck!! |
I had two poop eaters but they both out grew it thank goodness :confused: |

My Teddy used to do the same thing.. and he also did with cat poop. It was disgusting. I couldn't kiss him the same without wondering where his mouth had been. I used the pineapple for about 3 or 4 days and he stopped eating it. Also, I tried to feed him first thing in the morning, because I also saw that when he wasn't hungry he didn't eat his poop. Eventually, he grew out of it. I was so happy. Good luck... that is a nasty habit!! |
One of our dogs is Bichon - Shih Tzu mix who is almost a year old and has this problem occassionally. We talked to our vet about this problem and were told that contrary to popular belief, dogs do not do this because they are lacking a nutrient or anything like that in their diet. The only suggestion she had to offer as to why was that the dog might be trying to 'hide' his/her poop. We were also told about the pills at Petco to give the dogs to make the poop taste bad (shouldnt it already taste bad?) but we werent really a fan of giving our dog pills. The vet also recommended if you can get to it quick enough, to pour tobasco sauce over the poop. The only way we've been able to curve the problem is to just pick up the poop as soon as possible and throw it away. Hope this helps some... |
One of my yorkies is a poo eater and now the other does the same they tend to eat the cat poo not their own.What I do is pick up the poo right away hopefully they will stop eating it I myself dont know what else to do good luck... |
poo eater's annonomous Hello my name is Mascot and I am a poo eater.... I am laughing because I feel your pain! Mascot was a poo eater as a pup. He did grow out of it, but he was not easy to break! I did the pineapple, which he just ate around, and I bought forbid from the vet, a powder you sprinkle on their food to make the poo taste bad, as if it can taste any worse!!!! ANyhow the forbid is inexpensive but did not work either. Nothing but time detered Mascot from the poo. I hope something works for you because I know what a pain it is to deal with... good luck!!!! |
The pet stores sell "Forbid" which you can sprinkle on the poo to make it taste bad. A little "Adolph's" meat tenderizer works just as good. |
max the poo eater hi all, many thanks for your advice.... got some "DETERR" from Petsmart... tried to give it to Max, and he turned his nose up at me.... the big issue here is that when he eats it, he's ill for 2-3 days and will not touch food, so this morning (after he finally ate last night ) did his business, and i put some terrifying hot sauce on it!!! now lets see what happens. |
My Littlest Mac is just over 5 months old and just started eating his own poop a couple of days ago - what's up with that?! :eek: While he doesn't get ill from it, I do! I'm sure he'll grow out of it - he'd better! :mad: In the meantime I'll have to be extra vigilant in getting rid of it immediately! :animal36 My Shih Tzu did the same thing as a pup and he outgrew it, thankfully. |
My Missy not only ate her poop, she ate the cat's poop! How's that for disgusting? She actually preferred the cat poop...she ate it like it was the best thing on earth! :eek: Thankfully, she has outgrown this nasty habit. |
In addition to being disgusting, the other main reason to stop them from eating poo is that is how coccidia is passed (ingesting fecal matter). I've also heard about using meat tenderizer on their food, or "Accent" a flavor enhancer that I think has MSG in it. Probably the more specific Pet store remedies are better. |
