Does you vet do this too???? I'm going to go nuts! Ok, Lucie was supposed to have her vet appointment last Friday, and they called like 2 hours before her time to cancel due to some emergency...whatever... So I rescheduled for today at noon, for her 16 week shots. I'll say this now, I am very anal about professionalism, I am all for having fun in the workplace, but when a client is there it's one thing to be friendly, it's another to be completely unprofessional. The lady at the desk tells me to sit down and she'll call me when she is ready, some other lady comes out from the back and asks me if this is Lucie's 2nd series, I go no, her 4th (I was going off of the card from the breeder in my hand it was actually her 5th) which they caught, but I was wondering why she didn't know when she was staring right at her chart. Anyway, so this guy comes up to me, whom I have never seen, to take her. She has already been car sick and is shaking because she is scared, so I say no, it's ok, I have her, so he says ok and I follow him. The lady at the desk stops and says "oh, he will take her back" so he looks back and says oh ok, and I say wait, I want to go back with her, and she says ummm noooo there is anesthesia and stuff it's too much of a risk they will bring her right back. So I made sure right there that she wasn't getting the rabies today. They acted as if I was stupid for asking that. The last time I took her for her shots, she didn't want to sit still and she yelped when the vet did it, so I was waiting to hear her cry, which I didn't so who knows what they did. Does you vet allow you to go back for their shots??? My other problem is this, when they brought her out, I was waiting to pay and the guy who took her back was in one of their rooms with another employee saying that she told him they just wanted to see him carry the pink bag back there (Lucie was in her pink carrier) and the lady at the desk was telling him to "zip it" They did not tell me how much Lucie weighs, I don't even know if they weighed her, and she is now curled up sleeping right by me, she wont even eat. Last time she had no reaction to her shot, so I don't even know if they adjusted the dosage for her weight. (sorry for the novel I just wrote :p I am so frustrated with this vet, I think this was the last draw) |
RED FLAG! I would find another vet ASAP! I always go back with my babies, really its a must at my vet. The only time I was seperated is when Timmy had to have x-rays done but I was still in the room waiting for him to come back from the x-ray room. |
I go back with my baby. Matter of fact they usually put us in an exam room and we are waiting on him.. I would definitely find another vet. |
My vet always brings the shots into the room. The only time they take them in the back is for blood work, xrays, IV's, and such. |
I asked my friend if her vet does the same thing, but she has a 60lb English Bulldog, and she said she waits out front and they bring her back to her after a minute, but again her dog is 60lbs... The last time they took my dog back without me, it was to trim Duke's nails and when the girl brought him back she had made 4 toenails bleed and threw him at me  after that I refused to let them cut their nails. The worst part is, I have been taking my animals to this vet for as long as I can remember. But lately anytime I am in there, there is always someone new, and the staff seems to get gradually worse. But Dr. Reagor who is the vet who owns the office, he is so wonderful. But, he is rarely there now that he is getting older.. I feel so bad for my baby, she's just sleeping..and I don't know what they did...The last time she was weight she was 1lb 13 oz. I don't know how much she weighed today.... |
Ellie has never had an appt. rescheduled. If there are emergencies, we wait. Once they were very busy and there were no exam rooms open. The vet did the exam in the back and came out to the lobby to talk. I trust the vet though and this way we got to leave faster. Tech visits are sometimes done in the back without the owner but you should have the choice to pay for the visit and see a doctor in a room. While vaccine visits with techs are done in the back without you, I would not be happy that they won't let you back there. That is probably the about the same area where sick pets are kept and you should be able to visit if your pup is ever hospitalized. If they won't let you back there now, then they might not when it is important. It doesn't sound like you are comfortable and it doesn't sound like they are professional. I think I would go to a different vet. All dogs get the same dose of vaccine for the most part. |
That vet sounds really shady :thumbdown Get a new one asap! I've always been in the room when my baby got his shots. I really like my vet, everybody's friendly and professional. I know I come off as an over protective Yorkie mom, but they're all very understanding and very patient with me. You should never feel uncomfortable with your vet, nor should you have to question their practices, imo. |
I have never been told at any vet that I couldn't go back with mine. If I was, I would tell them goodbye. I intend to view everything they do to her and that is that.;) |

I have actually been in their back area before, a long while back with one of my other dogs, they needed to do something with him (can't remember what) but they actually told us we could go back with them. They don't even keep animals in that area, it's just set up for the surgeries and everything. They keep the sick animals in another area with cages. Personally I think she was full of it when she told me I couldn't go back because the guy that was taking Lucie seemed caught off guard when she said no. I'm going to be calling either later this afternoon, or tomorrow to speak with the owner to complain though. |

That's awful. When I got Baxter he had already been going to a different vet that I go to...so for his first appointment I took him back there to finish his shots. They did the same thing. They wouldn't let me go back there with him. They actually wanted me to leave him there, and pick him up later in the day, only to get a couple of vaccines. Ain't no darn way. I'll never go back there again. My vet has a wonderful area when a bench where mommies and daddies can sit down or can stand right by the examination table. I'm not leaving my babies for vet techs to practice on. Noooooooo. |
I'm a stcikler for professionalism too... and I always say trust your instinct. If you feel uncomfortable with this place and the level of service isn't meeting your expectations, then try somewhere else. There are plenty of excellent vets out there, I'm sure you'll find one that is a better match for you. I went to a vet for the first time to take my pup for his 2nd set of vaccinations and they also took him into the backroom for his shots. I was really surprised that they didn't do it in the exam room with me b/c that's how my previous vet did it... but then I found out that is somewhat normal for vet techs to administer the vaccinations in a back room (every vet is different). It makes me a little uncomfortable that I can't see him get the shots, but I'm going to give them another chance for Wall-E's next appt. then if I still feel weird about it, then I will switch vets. Good luck... |
I have never heard of such a thing! We always have an exam room and the vet administers all the shots. I would definitely find another vet if I were you. |
I have taken Pepper to the vet, twice, just to get his nails cut and I went back both times. |

Are vet techs really just there getting practice?? That would explain why I keep seeing new people constantly. Though they go through vets like people change underwear too...Everytime I am in there I have to see a different one.. |
Jamie's vet has a really neat set up. All the patient rooms have a 2nd door that opens into a really long room/hallway with a counter that runs the full length of the hall. At first I was really nervous about the vet taking him out of the room with me, but he said that dogs (like kids) take shots, etc. worse when their parents are standing right there. Anyway he asked me to peek out the door where Jamie couldn't see me. And it seems that Mr. Hollywood (aka Jamie) acts like the vet is just KILLING him in front of me but is nothing but licks and kisses when I'm not in his eyesight. However there are alot of other bad things about your vets office that would make me wanna change. Ashley, our tech, knows as much about Jamie as our vet. They would never ask me what they were doing on this appointment. They always know because Ashley calls me the day before to confirm the appointment. So maybe you should just call around and talk to several vet's about their policies and make sure that you're comfortable with who's taking care of your baby. |
Sometimes it takes some searching to find which vet fits you and your pet the best. I went through three before I found my current vets! This vet you've been going to sounds awful. If they won't let you come back to the exam room with your baby it's definitely time to find a new one. This kind of thing ususally happens when the main vet dr. stops spending as much time in their clinic. Same thing happened to my mom with her cats and dog. They doctor was getting older and working less and the whole clinic just went to poo. Even if it means driving a little further than you would like to, it's important to find a vet that both you AND your little one are comfortable with. I look at it this way...a good vet is JUST as important to me as a good gyno. You wouldn't sacrifice comfort level there would you? Good luck on your search and keep us updated! :) |
that insane!!! y wudnt they let u go back there. i ALWAYS go back with them wen they take abby. I dont even let them carry her for me. The shots are always given in front of me. I actually even pick her up while they pinch her :( to be honest, all she does is hold on to me and doesnt even moan or anything. if i were u, i'd go to another vet! doesnt sound like anybody knows what they r doin? I wuda just walked out... |

Yeah, I was dumbfounded when she didn't know what shot she was on, another thing, last time I forgot to take her shot record with me from the breeder, and they said it was ok and to bring it next time, so I made sure to have it today and no one asked to see it... |

We have another vet nearby that I took one of my cats to get spayed at, they were more costly which is why I never went back but I just might have to eat the extra expense if their staff is better |
NO Way!! I would never go back there!! I have worked for a vet...the only time we didn't allow the owners to go in the back is if it was going to be put under. I would not go back there. |
I'd be very upset! I always go back with my baby. There's no way in the world that they would stop me, if they tried, I'd go somewhere else. My vet is just wonderful and I've even seen him change needles on the vaccination for a much tinier one so that it wouldn't hurt Scooter. Scooter never even so much as whimpers. It might be time for you to find another vet.:thumbdown |
update I just called the vet, I wanted to wait until I knew they would have a shift change, and I asked to speak with the owner. The girl told me he was scheduled to be in on Thursday, so I am going to call him then and tell him about what happened. I asked my mom if they did that to her when she took her dog in for her shots, and she said no, she would always tell them she wanted to go back with her and they would let her. So I think that the lady in there today just thought she would get away with being a ***** because the owner wasn't in there. :thumbdown |
Find another vet! there is no reason why you should not beallowed to go in with your dog. the only time I have not been allowed was when he had to be sedated for his x rays and this last time for his surgery. They are SUPPOSED to be professionals and experts in animals, which means they SHOULD KNOW that a dog will be more comfortable with thier owner, and if they really care about the animals, then they want the owner to be informed and know what is going on. |
Hello, Just an FYI my vet also always allows me to go back with my yorkie, no matter what the case is. One time they have taken him back to shave his back leg, but then brought him right back into the waiting room. Having a vet you can trust, and communicate with is huge. So talk to some locals and check their vets out. :D |
I take my kiddo to a pet hospital so there's about 4 different vets there. When I make my appointments (they've never canceled any) I ask that the same vet see her all the time, that way she at least knows my dog. They do everything in the exam room which has a bench for us to sit on while we wait. The only thing the tech does is come in before the vet and gather all the info needed. The vet trims nails, gives shots, puts in microchip. The only thing the tech does I think is get weight and fecal if needed. So if I were you I would change vets asap. |
I don't let my dogs out of my sight at the vet's. My vet doesn't try to take my dogs away. She likes for me to be with them to keep them calm. |
I have never even heard of a vet's office doing that. My vet is great . I take my baby in, and when it is our turn we go into an exam room. Then Suzi gets weighed , and I talk to the tech . Then I wait for the vet, and have all my questions answsered. The vet gives the vaccinations, and Holds Suzi. He never leaves with her . They have always taken her temperture too. The vet listens to all my concerns and takes the time to answer. I watch everything that is done to Suzi. The front office people are very professional. The vet Hospital I go to is also a Certified animal Hospital . Not all vets hospitals, or clinics are certiifed. :aimeeyork I'd never stay at a place that would not allow me to be with my baby. They are suppose to have exam rooms. the place is highly unprofessional, and i would have walked out the door. :thumbdown |
omg You need to find another vet any vet that will not allow you back is not somewhere you want your baby to go After finding a new vet Report the lady and happenings to owner |
grrr Well I called Thursday when the owner was supposed to be there...He was finishing up an appointment with someone so the girl asked to take a message and he would call me back. I left a message and didn't get a call back...So I am wondering if the girl even gave him the message, if she realized who I was she was probably afraid I was going to complain and she'd get in trouble. So now I am thinking about calling to schedule an appointment with him, then in the appointment I tell him how mad they made me that day. But then I would have to pay for an appointment just to make a complaint... |
